Boko Haram beheads 11 of its own members.

Islamist group Boko Haram on Friday beheaded 11 of its own fighters in north-eastern Nigeria, said an official representing witnesses to the killings.

The 11 were executed because they had left a Boko Haram camp in Sambisa Forest and wanted to surrender to the government, said Mahmud Babagana from the National Union of Road Transport Workers, members of which were witnesses to the murders.

“The truth is that many of these guys are tired of killing and are beginning to repent. But [Boko Haram] won’t let them do that,” he added.

The killings took place in Miringa village in Borno state.

Troops Repel Boko Haram’s Daring Attack on Borno Town

Nigerian military, with the help of youth vigilantes, on Friday night successfully repelled an onslaught by the Islamist terror group Boko Haram on the two Borno towns Jere and Bama, a security source and residents revealed.

According to a security source, who spoke anonymously to our correspondent yesterday morning, the insurgents were believed to be gradually advancing towards Maiduguri.

This is happening on the heels of the Federal Government’s reassurance that the security forces were dealing a deadly blow to Boko Haram and are consequently winning the war against the sect. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bulus Lolo, disclosed this while briefing journalists on diplomatic activities in Abuja.

He cited President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts at regional security in the past one month, during which he had reached out to neighbouring countries like Chad, Niger and Cameroon, with a view to eradicating the Boko Haram menace. On the foiled attack on the two Borno towns, a security source further disclosed that the terrorists were advancing from Koshebe village in Mafa town, located about seven kilometres towards Zabarmari in Jere Local Government Area before being engaged by the military personnel, who repelled their attempt.

Although details on casualty figures still remain sketchy, Abba Yunus, a resident said some of the youth vigilantes had to use their vehicles in conveying the injured ones to hospital. He, however, added the reinforcement from the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri had great impact in crushing the insurgents' attack. The security source also said many people were killed in both pushes, adding that because it was night it would be difficult to ascertain the number of casualties, especially as insurgents have a habit of dragging their casualties away from battle front.
This latest attacks came just a day after similar incidents in Kukawa, Monguno, Malari in Konduga and Miringa town of Biu Local Government Area claimed over 200 lives.
Attempts by our correspondent to get the military authorities in Maiduguri speak on the incidents failed due to poor telecommunications services in the state. The Borno State commissioner of Police, Aderemi Opadokun, has however confirmed the recent Boko Haram onslaughts on Borno towns.
In a related development, the Nigerian military has written off the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in parts of Borno State as desperate efforts to stave off the impending offensive by the newly reorganised Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) that is to commence operations later this week.
A top military source who spoke to THISDAY yesterday on the condition of anonymity said that the military high command are already in the North East to put finishing touches to the planned onslaught against the rampaging terrorists.
According to him, the centre will also give the needed impetus that would ensure prosecution and successful conclusion of the war against terrorism.
He noted then that the Centre will also provide the required interface between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to be deployed at the Lake Chad Basin area at the end of the month of July 2015.
In a related development, the military has deployed more troops to deal with the resurgent terrorists wreaking havoc in the North East, especially Borno State.

The Nigerian military has during a cordon-and-search operation recently recovered among other weapons recovered a jeep full of Improvised Explosives Devises. This was in the aftermath of suicide bombing attacks on Zabamari Muna near Maiduguri.
A statement signed by the Director, Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, confirmed: “The jeep, along with two Hilux vehicles being used by terrorists, was destroyed in the course of pursuit and encounter with a group of terrorists trying to escape after simultaneous attacks on targets in the communities Thursday and Friday.”

The statement also disclosed that “a total of six suicide bombers had detonated themselves around the garage killing scores of people while some people were also wounded. A soldier also died.”Meanwhile, there has been a large exodus of people from the affected communities, as the palpable fear of another siege on their homes by the insurgents continued to grow.

The mass exodus to safer towns including Old Maiduguri (Jere) and the state capital Maiduguri is coming on the heels of call from residents of the state that the military should be proactive in its war strategy against the insurgents.
Some of the fleeing residents of Zabarmari ward, who were attacked by the Boko Haram insurgents, lamented that the strategy of sitting back to wait for the insurgents to first attack before they are repelled only unnecessarily prolongs the war on the insurgents.

TROOPS RECOVER JEEP LOADED WITH BOMBS

A jeep full of improvised explosives devices was among items recovered by troops conducting cordon and search operations after suicide bombing attacks on Zabamari Muna near Maiduguri in Borno State last week.
The jeep along with two Hilux vehicles was destroyed in the course of pursuit and encounter with a group of terrorists trying to escape after simultaneous attacks on targets in the communities on Thursday and Friday.
A total of six suicide bombers had detonated their explosives killing themselves in the process around a motor park thereby leading to the death of scores of people while some people were also wounded.
A soldier also died in the attack. Military explosives ordinance experts backed by Police Bomb Disposal units however moved in and are making vigorous searches for any bombs that might have been hidden or left unexploded in the area.
In the past one month, over 600 terrorists have been killed while the survivors are finding life extremely difficult.
It is believed in some quarters that in their desperation to create fear among the citizens, the terrorists are now deliberately targeting remote villages where their former members who had renounced the sect membership were taking refuge.
Residents in such areas are being urged to muster the courage by exposing suspects, strange objects or movements to the relevant authorities for prompt actions.

Command Centre, Checkpoints And Terror War

Since May 29 when President Muhammadu Buhari announced the relocation of the command centre to Maiduguri for an intensification of the war effort against Boko Haram, security experts and social commentators have differed widely on the matter. While those in favour of the relocation were convinced that it would enable the military authorities to understand the enemy better and respond more quickly to developments, others felt that it was a wrong move that was bound to backfire in the sense that all it would take to neutralise the new command centre was a well-aimed explosive device. Early last month, the Nigerian Army revealed that an advance team had moved to Maiduguri for the establishment of the Command and Control Centre as directed by the president with an alternate command centre in Yola. Codenamed “Operation Zaman Lafiya,” the war against terrorism was expected to be prosecuted with renewed vigour. At the same time, the military was ordered to remove soldiers from checkpoint duties as those were considered police duties.

Many Nigerians, especially commuters and commercial vehicle operators who had been at the receiving end of the traffic gridlock and ‘toll gate’ bribery activities at some of the checkpoints, celebrated their removal. There ought to be a distinction between military duties and those of the police, they argued.

But the recent spate of bombings in Maiduguri, Kano, Damaturu, Yola, Jos and several other towns and cities has made quite a number of people wonder if the relocation of the command and control centre to Maiduguri has had the desired effect and if the removal of military checkpoints was not a wrong decision after all. Following the Jos incident in which 44 people died and 67 were injured, Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong called on the president to restore the checkpoints because, without them, people can come in from all angles and attack innocent people.

It is clear that Boko Haram has decided to go for broke after they had been deprived of their evil coven in Sambisa Forest and other remote terrains. The establishment of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) by Nigeria and its immediate neighbours has also put the terrorists under pressure as the space within which they had been operating has been steadily constricted. The renewed wave of suicide bombings using young women can only be seen in this light.

We call on the federal government and the military authorities to carry out a periodic review of security measures, especially in the face of the renewed onslaught by the terrorists. There may be need to restore checkpoints in some crisis-prone areas. Also, more than ever before, there is an urgent need for massive investment in intelligence gathering. We should aim to catch the terrorist before he strikes.

Bravery!!!!! Naval Officer Fighting Against Boko Haram
Dies To Save His Colleagues
July 9, 2015

A Naval Officer, Seaman Paul Amaseimogha, may have died in the fight against the dreaded Boko Haram insurgent sect in Maiduguri, Borno State, but for his colleagues, he died a super hero as he ensured that he died alone so that his colleagues would live.

According to a friend of the gallant Naval rating, the
young man who was serving in Bayelsa State was posted
to Maiduguri and he did not waste time in showing his
bravery.

On the day he died however, his battalion were on the
trail of the sect when he stepped on a landmine, knowing a sure death stared him in the face. Unlike others who would have kept quiet, Amaseimogha called for his colleagues to leave the area fast while he tried to detonate the explosive.

But he was not successful as the landmine blew him up
in the process. But he was able to to save the lives of his
colleagues.
Such bravery!
Read the Facebook post from a colleague of
Amaseimogha, Patrick Okunima, eulogizing the hero.

Nigerian Army Quashes Boko Haram

The Nigerian army has repelled an attack by Boko Haram insurgents to recapture a major town close to Damaturu in Yobe state, Channels reports.

A top military officer said the Boko Haram terrorists engaged security forces on ground late evening on Thursday in Buni-Yadi in an effort to regain the territory that will ease their advancement into Damaturu. Security forces repelled the attack, casualty figure was unknown at the time of filling the report Serious military hardware was in the early hours of Friday being moved towards Buni-Yadi axis which confirmed the clash between the insurgents and security forces.

Boko Haram attacks prison in Niger, four killed

NIAMEY, (Reuters) – Suspected Boko Haram militants launched an attack on the prison in the southern Niger town of Diffa late on Saturday, military sources said, in an apparent bid to free fellow members of the Nigerian Islamist group held there. Three of the assailants and one soldier were killed before the attack was repelled, the sources said. Boko Haram also attacked the prison in February. “When the attack was repelled, the assailants fled, probably back into the town,” one military source said. “We are searching for them.” A second military source said the attackers may have been residents of Diffa, as no one had seen them enter the town. Boko Haram is seeking to carve out an Islamic state in northeast Nigeria. Despite losing territory to an offensive by regional militaries this year, Boko Haram has carried out a wave of deadly attacks in Nigeria, Chad and Niger in recent weeks. The group has sworn allegiance to Islamic State, which has declared an Islamic caliphate in the large parts of Iraq and Syria that it controls.

New service chiefs unveiled, Buratai heads army

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the
appointment of Service Chiefs and National Security Adviser,
NSA, to replace former Service Chiefs who were sacked
earlier today.

According to a statement by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser
to the President (Media & Publicity), the following are the
newly appointed Service Chiefs: Major-General Abayomi
Gabriel Olonishakin – Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General
T.Y. Buratai – Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete
Ekwe Ibas – Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshal
Sadique Abubakar – Chief of Air Staff.

Others appointed today are: Air Vice Marshal Monday Riku
Morgan – Chief of Defence Intelligence and Major-General
Babagana Monguno (retd.) – National Security Adviser.
The new Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Olonishakin
(N/6901) hails from Ekiti State. Until his appointment as
Chief of Defence Staff today, he was the Head of the Nigerian
Army Training and Doctrine Command in Minna, Niger State.
The new Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Buratai hails from
Borno State. Until his new appointment today, he was the
Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force which has
its headquarters in Ndjamena.

Maj-Gen. Buratai has previously served as Commander of
the Nigerian Army’s 2nd Brigade in Port Harcourt and
Commander of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry in Jaji,
Kaduna State.

The new Chief of Defence Intelligence, Air Vice Marshal
Morgan hails from Benue State. He was commissioned into
the Nigerian Air Force as a Pilot Officer in June, 1982. His
previous appointments include Air Officer Commanding,
NAF Logistics Command.

The new Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Ibas (NN/0746)
hails from Cross River State. He enlisted into the Nigerian
Defence Academy as a member of the 26th Regular Course
in 1979 and was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1983.
His previous appointments include: Naval Provost Marshal,
Chief Staff Officer, Naval Training Command, Chief of
Administration, Naval Headquarters, Flag Officer
Commanding Western Naval Command and Chief of
Logistics, Naval Headquarters.

Until his appointment as Chief of Naval Staff, he was the
Chief Executive Officer of Navy Holdings Limited.
The new Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar
(NAF/1433) hails from Bauchi State.

His previous appointments include: Chief of Standards and
Evaluation, NAF Headquarters; Chief of Defence
Communications and Air Officer Commanding, NAF Training
Command.

Until his new appointment today as Chief of Air Staff, he was
the Chief of Administration, NAF Headquarters.
The new National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Monguno (rtd.)
was a member of the Nigerian Defence Academy’s 21st
Regular Course. Before his retirement from the Army, he
held several command and staff appointments including:
Commander, Guards Brigade, Deputy Commandant,
National Defence College, Chief of Defence Intelligence,
Chief of Defence Logistics and Commander, Training and
Doctrine Command.

The new Service Chiefs will hold their appointments in an
acting capacity until confirmed by the Senate.
President Buhari thanked the outgoing Service Chiefs and
National Security Adviser for their services to the nation and
wishes them well in their future endeavours.
Buhari sacked his army, navy, air force and defence chiefs
earlier Monday, a widely anticipated move as the former
general has made crushing Islamist militant group Boko
Haram his top priority.

Since his inauguration in May, Buhari has moved Nigeria’s
defence command centre to Maiduguri, the birthplace of the
jihadi sect, and is setting up the headquarters for a multi-
national joint taskforce in Chad’s capital N’Djamena.

In June, Amnesty International accused Nigeria’s military of
systemic human rights abuses and the deaths of 8,000
prisoners and called for an investigation into many top
military officials including the army and air force chiefs.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan was heavily criticised
for his inability to deal with the six-year insurgency in the
northeast of Africa’s biggest oil producer which has killed
thousands and displaced 1.5 million people.

Army morale hit an all time low under Jonathan and it was
not until the start of 2015 that the militants were finally
pushed out of most areas with the help of foreign
mercenaries, troops from neighbouring countries and new
equipment.

But Nigerians saw Jonathan’s victories as too little to late.
The outgoing officials are: Chief of Defence Staff, Air
Marshall Alex Badeh; the Chief of Army Staff, Major General
Kenneth Minimah; the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral
Usman Jibrin and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall
Adesola Amosu.

Below is the picture of the new COAS : " Maj. General Yusuf
Tukur Buratai".

Secondly we haven't gotten the right set of hard ware to nail BH once and for all,but half cake is better than none !
