NAF @ 60: CAS HIGHLIGHTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AS CRUCIAL TO OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has underscored the importance of Research and Development in enhancing Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operational effectiveness. He also stressed that cultivating indigenous capacity to manufacture and service platforms is essential to surmounting some of the constraints experienced in aircraft maintenance. Air Marshal Abubakar delivered these insights during the NAF Inter-Command Research and Development Competition, held earlier today, 18 May 2024, at NAF Base, Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja as part of activities lined up in commemoration of NAF's 60th Anniversary Celebrations.

Speaking further, Air Marshal Abubakar went down memory lane to recount a poignant moment in NAF's history where, after acquiring 18 Jaguar aircraft in 1984, the entire fleet became grounded 7 years later with some having as little as 150 hours of total flight time majorly due to lack of spares or technical know-how. He went further to lament a similar fate with the MiG 21 aircraft, procured in 1975 and later retired in the late 1980s, with flight hours ranging from 43hrs to 469hrs. These premature retirements, he noted, underscored NAF's struggle to sustain operations due to technical shortcomings, echoing challenges in maintaining aircraft weaponry and other critical equipment. "This, once more," declared the CAS, "highlights the indispensable role of Research and Development in NAF's operations."

The CAS then went on to highlight NAF’s distinction as a trailblazer in research and development endeavours. According to him, "With the production of the Tsaigumi UAV to pioneering advancements like rocket launchers, heat shields and weaponization of Alpha Jet aircraft, the NAF has consistently showcased its competence in Research and Development innovations. These achievements have ensured the readiness and deployment of NAF platforms and equipment across operational theaters." Recognizing the paramount importance of Research and Development, Air Marshal Abubakar, announced that he had approved the installation of 8 diverse CNC machines at the Air Force Force Research and Development Centre in Osogbo. He also added that the NAF was on the verge of signing a technology transfer agreement with a company in Europe for the production of the 57mm rocket armament. According to him, “These endeavors epitomize our commitment to prioritizing Research and Development, leveraging state-of-the-art technology, strategic partnerships, and lessons learned, in alignment with my command philosophy."

In his opening address, the Chief of Standard and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal MN Onyebashi, elucidated the competition's purpose which he says was to showcase innovative solutions addressing operational, maintenance, and service-related challenges within the NAF.

The occasion was graced by Branch Chiefs, senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy and NAF as well as participants from NAF Commands across the country.

TROOPS APPREHEND NIGERIAN SYNDICATE SUPPLYING FUEL TO AMBAZONIA REBELS FOR TERRORISM ACTIVITIES IN TARABA STATE

In a significant covert operation driven by actionable intelligence and extensive surveillance, troops of Nigerian Army deployed for Counter-terrorism operations along the Nigeria-Cameroon Border in Taraba State have successfully intercepted and apprehended 8 members of a syndicate that specializes in smuggling fuel from Nigeria to the Ambazonian rebels in the Republic of Cameroon to facilitate terrorists' activities. The sting operation took place on Friday 24 May 2024 along the Abong-Kurmi Baissa Road in Taraba State, between Nigeria and Cameroon border.

The suspects, identified as Jafaru Adamu (32 years), Auwal Haruna (34 years), Umar Dahiru, Mubarak Abdullahi (20 years), Saidu Musa (26 years), Bashiru Ibrahim (18 years), Danlami Yahuaza (19 years), and Abubakar Abdullahi (19 years), were caught enroute the border with large quantity of fuel. During preliminary investigation, the culprits confessed to smuggling and selling fuel to the Cameroonian Ambazonian rebels, who are prohibited from entering Nigeria to purchase the product directly.

The suspects revealed that they have previously bought fuel from Gassol and Bali Local Government Areas (LGA) at the rate of ₦950 per liter. However, they discovered that in Takum LGA the fuel was sold at ₦800 per liter, prompting them to source for the product in Takum.

At the time of their arrest, the suspects were traveling in three J5 vehicles, carrying 605 jerry cans, each with a capacity of 40 liters, totaling 24,200 liters of fuel. The fuel, valued at ₦800 per liter, amounts to a total worth of Nineteen Million Three Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira (₦19,360,000) only.

Further investigation led to the identification of other members of the smuggling syndicate, including Alhaji Abdulmumini, Jafaru Adamu, Babilu Zubairu, Sule Abong, and Mark Akawu, who is reportedly the chairman of the syndicate based in Abong, a border community between Kurmi LGA of Taraba State and the Republic of Cameroon.

This operation marks a significant step in curbing the illegal supply of resources to terrorist groups and enhancing regional security.

In one of the old videos I watched on NA CION, the present CDS was the then GOC DIV 7 Maiduguri. He explained there are some times/season where they have to navigate the terrain by foot in other to carry out their objective.
We can't say at least the NA don't have gun trucks/MRAPS to transport troops in the N.E.
We might not have enough of them but this is type of war where you have to change your tactics and sometimes the terrain/season dictates your mode of transport.

ARMY CHIEF VISITS COMMAND ENGINEERING DEPOT...CHARGES PERSONNEL TO SUSTAIN TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION, INGENUITY IN SUPPORT OF ONGOING OPERATIONS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja has charged personnel of the Command Central Engineering DEPOT (CED) Nigerian Army (NA), to sustain the technological innovation and ingenuity exhibited in rebuilding, renovating and repairing burnt, damaged and broken down Combat platforms recovered from formations and units deployed across the country. Gen Lagbaja gave the charge today, Monday, 27 May 2024, when he paid his maiden visit to the Engineering Depot in Kaduna, where he was thoroughly briefed by the Commander Major General Babatunde Alaya on the engineering efforts of the Depot in rebuilding, reboring and refitting damaged and broken down Combat vehicles in support of formations and units of the Nigerian Army. He urged the personnel to sustain the current operational momentum and successes by supporting the troops in the frontlines through swift engineering interventions in rebuilding and repairing Combat equipment.

The COAS pointed out that drawing from his Command Philosophy, the CED remains pivotal in ensuring the sustenance of equipment in the inventory of the Nigerian Army. He commended the Commander, officers, soldiers, and civilian staff of the DEPOT for diligently keying into his Command Philosophy to "transform the Nigerian Army into a well trained, equipped and highly motivated force towards achieving our constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment". He lauded the earlier leadership of the NA for resuscitating the comatose former Central Engineering Depot which has now been transformed into a viable and innovative Command Engineering Depot.

During the visit, General Lagbaja inspected the various production sections of the Depot and interacted with the personnel. He was accompanied by the Commandant Nigerian Defence Academy, Major General John Ochai, GOC 1 Division Major General Lander Saraso and Principal Staff Officers from the Nigerian Army.

Check what South Africa was doing during the South African border war and check what we have been doing for nearly 20 years and see just how "serious" we are about all this. The South Africans would show up at times and places of their choosing, wreak havoc and retire at will. They were very badly outnumbered and still regularly inflicted 100:1 casualties if not more. Like almost all of southern Africa was against them, but these guys countless times used their cunning and ingenuity to kill thousands while suffering relatively few casualties.

I am not holding brief for these guys, But they really were exceptional.

Now, ask yourself if the Nigerian military is as capable. Is it even willing? I don't see that.

Just last week, the wife of a general, a housewife was in the news because 35 million naira worth of her jewelry was stolen. And that was only a part of her jewelry collection. Where did you think the money came from and how many like her are out there? And let's not forget the Bannex plaza episode or the fact that the NA has been crying over lack of personnel and has been keeping troops for many years at the war front and not regularly rotating them. The same NA has thousands of checkpoints all over the South East and South South manned by troops who are badly needed at the war front.

You can't take an uncritical look at the whole situation and not realize that this is not a serious war we have on our hands. The incompetence, corruption, intentional stupidity and avarice is just too blatant to be ignored.

But what the NA does not seem to understand is that the more that bandits and terrorists are treated with kid gloves, the more they will multiply and the more they improve their armaments. Soon, the NA will find itself badly outnumbered and possibly outgunned. When that happens, we might all well and truly be fcked.

NA should leave the war to the indigenous civilians who's areas are affected by the activities of the bandits and see the bandit extinguished within 6months..!!
All the civilians would be needing are AK rifles, gmbg, technicals, rpgs, comm gadgets with drones...!!

War would be fought in a traditional way..!!

The army who is fighting cos of his 100K salary would never be more committed than a man whose village is burnt and his family killed..!!

Simple fact..!!
