Nigerian Politics is Still Too Primitive for Civilized Politicians

Since the independence of Nigeria on October 1, 1960 to date, no Nigerian election has been factually free and fair, because of rampant cases of various forms of rigging, including vote buying, mass thumb-printing of ballots, snatching of ballot boxes, forging of voters cards and terrorizing of voters and political candidates followed by political assassinations and riots which precipitated Nigeria into the catastrophic internecine civil war from 1967-1970 that claimed more than 1 million lives. But Nigerian politicians have failed to learn lessons from the terrible mistakes of the past as the news reports on the 2015 general elections are reading like headlines from the past. More than 100 people have been murdered in political violence during the elections on March 28 and April 11.
These horrifying and terrifying incidents have only rubbished and tarnished the global image of Nigeria.

The two major political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Party (APC) have committed most of the hellish atrocities of political violence by their extremely desperate and greedy politicians using political thugs and hired killers in their bloody political campaigns. It is unfortunate that there is no Nigerian politician in public office without shedding innocent blood to get there.

In the 2011 elections, many National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members working with the Independent National Electoral Commission Ad-Hoc Staff in the north were murdered by rampaging irate mobs. And no amount of compensation will bring them back to their families and friends. But have they learned any lesson from the horror of 2011? No. Because, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom, Mr. Austin Okojie reported during the Saturday April 11 elections that security operatives arrested a former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Maj. Gen. Edet Akpan (retd.) and 10 NYSC members for alleged electoral offences. If they were mobbed and lynched, the ignorant public will blame any of the political parties and not the desperate and greedy NYSC members who have violated the fundamental raisons d'être of the NYSC scheme: "created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war. The unfortunate antecedents in our national history gave impetus to the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps by decree No.24 of 22nd May 1973 which stated that the NYSC is being established "with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity". But NYSC members have become agents of partisan politics and rigging of elections that will worsen the political crises plaguing the nation.

When the youths who are the future leaders of the nation are now accomplices of the desperate and greedy corrupt politicians, then we cannot expect any improvement in the development of democracy and good governance in Nigeria. This is the tragedy of Nigerian politics. And no civilized politician will want to join such a primitive congregation of political barbarians in their devilish struggle for political power.

The Governorship/Houses of Assembly Elections in Rivers State have been a miniature war with armed militias and thugs working for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Elections in Rivers State appear to be a do-or-die battle for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDD, and its chieftains. Yesterday, Friday April 10, Sports Minister, Dr. Tamuno Danagogo, arrived his native Abonnema, Akuku Toru local Government, in company with security agents and armed militiamen went around the community terrorising supporters of All Progressives Congress, APC.

They stormed the area where officials were distributing materials in a gunboat manned by one Chief Isimama Ikiriko, hijacked all materials at gunpoint. The attackers were led by two notorious cultists who were identified as

Hope Dan Opusungi and Kenneth Dan Opusungi.

Having seized the materials, the armed men barred polling agents of the All Progressives Congress, APC, from escorting the materials to the distribution centre. The two Opusungis’, like Chief Ikiriko, are all known card-carrying members of PDP. Kenneth Opusingi and his crew were lodged at De Don Hotel in Abonema. All these activities were carried out in the presence of Security Officials.

Sports Minister, Dr. Tammy Danagogo’s close associate, Roland Sekibo, also known as gun runner, was moving with soldiers, policemen and suspected cultists. The cultists used machetes and other dangerous weapons to unleash terror on All Progressives Congress, APC. Many people were driven into the bush where they sought refuge, while Sekibo, military men, policemen and crew took over the Abonnema Bridge turning back APC chieftains and supporters. Shooting continued and still ongoing as at the time of the report.

Prior to the elections, Dame Patience Jonathan wife of the President and a native of Oba ama Okirka, had visited Rivers State meeting with Tom Ateke, an ex militant leader, security chiefs, DPO and other INEC personnel. From threatening to cajoling she appealed that she will be disgraced by an APC win in Rivers State.

Thugs hired by a PDP women leader Mrs Tonye Oyinda are presently mounted in the polling unit to prevent Ibinabo Briggs (APC) agent from going close to the materials.

In Asari Toru - Commissioner for Women Affairs’ house is being attacked by thugs who are shooting and setting her house ablaze with explosives. To ensure that she achieves her aim she has turned Rivers State into a killing field. In Idu, ONELGA, the youth leader, Hon. Clever Orukowu was reported dead. Also in Borokiri, Rex Lawson Extension, a policeman was killed.

APC agents in Bonny, staged a peaceful protest as all the SPO's in Ward 012 were PDP Exco members. An APC agent was detained by INEC officials in Bonny. One Victor Oko Jumbo led over a hundred cult boys loyal to Wike into Bonny. They are familiar faces at the University of Port Harcourt. Leader of the armed cultists was identified as Uche Ekwueme. Efforts to make arrest failed. One PDP Randolph Brown is in-charge of the police. The DPO botched the plan.

In Ward 015, PU 001, Gokana Local Government Area, Chairman has been abducted by Solomon Ndigbara. The entrance has been padlocked and the thugs are armed. There were shootings in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Ward 2 Onanelu by PDP thugs. In Omoku, all returning officers are members of PDP. We had hoped that there would be reshuffling. This was some of their strategy last time in Ward 001 and it is working for them again. Festus the Ward Collation Officer reported that the Police DPO did not allow APC agent and the APC chieftain Ofule Enebele to take stock of Election materials. The DPO was later involved in a private discussion with the PDP Stakeholders, Ward 014. Ward 006, no result sheet. Ward 016, PU 015 no result sheet. The DPO, Ozuoba Divisional Police headquarters, from the information gathered is assisting the PDP in Akpor kingdom under the leadership of ‘Heaven’, the ward Chairman, to snatch away sensitive materials like result sheets this night. Ammunition arriving through Rumukparali by boat.

Mr .Wilson was escorting electoral materials but had to run for safety when PDP thugs arrived and threatened everyone's safety. Mr Wilson ran for cover and abandoned his agents' phone at home.

Materials are being transferred from the INEC truck into a Mitsubishi Bus at Rumuola College of Arts and Science with the assistance of the police.

INEC materials have been tempered with at the Obio/Akpor RAC centre. They have been changed with fake materials but our (APC) agents are fully on ground to make sure no material is distributed to the units until we have verified their validity. But we need security to make sure we are safe. Commander has not answered my calls since.

Obio/Akpor collation centre, the materials were hijacked last night. No PDP agents were found present.

In Ward 006, police manhandling all APC Agents and restricting their access to electoral materials while giving PDP agents full access. Materials are moving to polling units without APC agents accompanying them.

In Ward 011, no result sheet. Call from Rumuola rack centre. police prevented APC members from coming in. at 2:00am a car drove in exchanging materials to the vehicles. Police shut into the air to scare them away. They need the INEC officials to ascertain if the other materials are original.

A special police unit drafted to the RAC covering wards 9, 10 and 11 situate at St. John's model primary school Rumueme beat up and chased APC agents away to allow Anugbum Onuoha (cousin to the PDP Guber Candidate) to come in with a carton containing some electoral materials and took away original results sheets for those wards. These 3 wards have no less than 90,000 votes.

No result sheet in Rumueme Ward Ward 010, PU 023. In unit 8 inclusive in the troubled area and the caller said it's Rumuomasi rack centre(where materials for election are to be collected). The caller informed that the policemen brought in materials which were exchanged with other materials.

PRESS RELEASE

JONATHAN’S WIFE, WIKE, DANAGOGO, IKURU INTENSIFY EFFORTS TO RIG RIVERS GUBER AND HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY POLLS *Clever the APC Youth Leader and others killed •Rivers APC Condemns Gang-Up With Police

First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate, Chief Nyesome Wike, Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru, and Minister of Sports Tammy Danagogo have in the past 24 hours intensified efforts to rig the on-going governorship and State House of Assembly elections in favour of the PDP.

“Reports available to us confirm that Rivers PDP, the Police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have not changed their tactics of rigging all elections in Rivers State. The strategy adopted to cart away INEC materials and writing results in favour of PDP in the presidential and National Assembly elections of March 28th are sadly being replicated in the gubernatorial and State Assembly election of today, April 11th,” Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, said in a statement issued this morning in Port Harcourt. He backed up the allegation with the following facts:

The DPO Rumuepirikom Police Station early this morning aided the movement of INEC election materials at the RAC covering wards 12 and 13 in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area situate at Ola-Nu-da Model Primary School opposite School of Arts and Science. She escorted a Passat wagon into the RAC and carted away the original materials, shooting and chasing away APC agents.

Also early this morning, a special police unit drafted to the RAC covering wards 9, 10 and 11 situate at St John’s Model Primary School Rumueme beat up and chased our people away to allow Anugbum Onuoha (cousin to the PDP guber candidate) to come in with a carton containing some electoral materials and took away original results.

PDP militiamen operating in a gunboat have seized electoral materials in Akuku Toru Local Government Area.

Chief Wike’s fake police are currently thumb-printing ballot papers and have threatened to kill any APC agent that raises an eyebrow. The game plan is to announce the results through social media, which will tally with what they have already filled with INEC as Rivers State gubernatorial election result.

Thugs working for Mr. Michael-West, a House of Assembly candidate on the platform of PDP, have bombed the residence of Rivers State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Joeba West, in Buguma, Asari Toru Local Government Area. The thugs numbering over 20 shot sporadically and threw Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) into the commissioner’s house, leaving it badly damaged. The whereabouts of Mrs. Joeba West remain uncertain.

In Ikuru Town, Andoni Local Government Area, PDP supporters shot all day on Friday. Earlier, there were allegations that Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru, who recently defected to PDP, had moved in scores of ammunition and militia men prior to the elections.

In Gokana Local Government, five men in military camouflage uniform and fake identity cards were arrested and handed over to the police at Kpor Divisional Police headquarters. However, there are fears that DCP John Amadi, known to be working with the PDP, is working to get them released.

President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience, has arrived Okrika, her birthplace, yesterday to personally take charge of undemocratic efforts to secure ‘victory’ for PDP in the Governorship/House of Assembly elections. Though she was expected to have been in Otuoke with her husband, Jonathan, to vote in the House of Assembly election, Mrs. Jonathan chose to stay back in Rivers State to coordinate effort to rig the governorship election in favour of her candidate, Chief Ezebuwon Nyesome Wike. Mrs. Jonathan, “doing her last dance”, in the words of an Okrika source, is reported to have taken steps to capture every vote in Okrika and Ogu/Bolo, after which she will move to the INEC office in Port Harcourt to supervise collation and the declaration of results.

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, yesterday unleashed a band of vicious soldiers on residents and possible voters in his hometown, Abonnema, headquarters of Akuku Toru Local Government, in brazen disrespect to all known principles of democracy, decorum and rights of the people. The Sports Minister, a chieftain of PDP, moved from house-to-house from 9.00am, hounding and brutalising known APC members.

APC party agents in all 5 polling units in Kalio Ama (Ward 9), Okrika were abducted out of their units by PDP militants while police men on duty watched helplessly. Spirited efforts were made by other APC stalwarts to trace, locate and release them where they were being held. By the time they were restored to their duty posts, electoral materials had been hijacked and taken away by PDP members in all the units.

No security presence in ward 7, Okrika.. Meanwhile. Samuel Okoko, a PDP member is openly patrolling with police and one Philemon Atelibo moving around with over 20 cult boys. APC supporters are being attacked in Ward 5, Okrika.

In Borokiri in Port harcourt a policeman has been shot dead. 0n confirmed report has it that the Presidency has given order to re-deployed the AIG 0gunshaken immediately for assisting to ensure peace in Rivers State which did not go well with Dame Patience Jonathan.

11. Asari Toru RAKS burnt down by irate PDP youths after stolen the results sheets.

Original Electoral materials are hijacked and where there are available, fake materials are used with hope that they will use the original materials to fine-tune the rigging plot by PDP and INEC

In Idu Community in ONELGA, Hon Clever the APC Youth Leader was shot and killed by the PDP hoodlums with scores of APC members in other areas have also being killed.

Rivers State Government Refutes SMS Postponing Elections in the State.

The attention of the Rivers State Government has been drawn to SMS message purporting the cancellation of elections in the state by the Independent Electoral Commission. The state governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi hereby reaffirms his position that the elections must hold as scheduled and that all eligible voters in the state should go out and exercise their rights to elect the next Governor and members of the State House of Assembly.

Rivers people are further reassured of the Government commitment to ensuring their safe and security at the elections”.

“Rivers APC unreservedly condemns this rape of democracy by people who consider themselves to be above the law. We appeal to the military, the Police High Command and other security agencies involved in election duties in Rivers State to intervene urgently and ensure that the elections are conducted in accordance with relevant laws and that the people’s will prevails at the end of the day. Anything to the contrary would be an invitation to chaos,” Dr. Ikanya said.

Long Live APC!
Long Live Rivers State!!

OP, please let me first humbly ask you to reduce the type size of your posts. They're tough on the eyes to read.

Now to your topic, my take is that some of the so-called "civilized politicians' are the main culprit and architects of election violence. These wicked and greedy politicians are educated, exposed, enlightened and have seen how politics is played by other nations that can be called model of democracy.

However, instead of these wicked persons to engage in delivering true dividends of democracy, they loot their constituency's resources and give peanuts to the youths they failed to empower so as to unleash terror during election.

As someone rightly pointed out already, the situation is improving especially in the SW and some Northern states. It now seems the SS and the SE are the epicenter of election terror now.

It only appear as if the SS and SE are the epicentre of electoral violence because GEJ did not win. There would have been massive killings if GEJ had won the election in the North.
It is a worrisome situation, my fears are that it should not extend to oil facilities our mainstay economic product. Already, some states have not been able to pay salaries for many months.
I still consider GEJ as the father of modern day democracy in Nigeria.

This shows the level of our readiness to accept and praise mediocrity. to you and your likes, all his past atrocities are not worth looking into since he conceded defeat in an election he clearly lost. Why not award him with a Nobel Peace Prize as canvassed for by some people.

Don't mind the GEJIDIOTS.
So, GEJ accepting defeat in a presidential election he clearly lost makes him a hero?
I have always said that the funniest creatures on earth are the GEJIDIOTS. grin

Now lets look at our past leaders since the inception of democracy, I will say that OBJ exhibited the epic of mediocrity. However, he is still celebrated by some people.! In my opinion, I still rate GEJ on high ranking compared to all of our past leaders, both dead and living. I certainly owe no one any apology for this.
