In the interest of truth and to assist clear the air on the present state of events in the Abia elections, here are the facts...
1. INEC has decided that the elections are inconclusive as a result of irregularities in SOME POLLING UNITS in some selected local government areas.
2. INEC has not cancelled elections in ANY local Government as a whole but has identified specific polling units where there were established cases of electoral malfeasance.
3. These polling units are in the following local government areas - Aba North, Aba South, Arochukwu, Osisioma Ngwa, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Umunneochi, Ugwunagbor and Ohafia.
4. Please note that elections were not cancelled in these local governments as a whole but in some selected polling units.
5. As at the time of this decision, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu of the PDP had polled a total of 248,459 while Dr. Alex Otti had 165, 406. The difference comes 83,053 votes in favor of Dr. Ikpeazu.
6. Now the total number of REGISTERED VOTERS in these affected polling units is about 177,000 votes which outweighs the 83, 053 votes which is the difference between the two main candidates.
7. By the provisions of the Electoral Act, where the number of REGISTERED voters in disputed areas is higher than the number of votes in favor of any candidate, the elections in such disputed areas will be reconducted.
8. Therefore INEC will have to conduct fresh elections in these identified affected polling units at a date to be fixed by the commission. (25th of April).
9. Now looking at the spread of the local governments involved, there appears to be an even spread between the strongholds of both Dr. Ikpeazu and Dr. Otti. While Dr. Otti won in Umuahia South, Aba North, Umunneochi, Arochukwu, Aba South and Ohafia....Dr. Ikpeazu won in Osisioma, Ugwunagbor, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Umuahia North.
10. The implication is that apart from these specific areas, results from all other areas remain intact.
The situation remains unclear but whether fresh elections in these areas will have any significant impact on the final results remain to be seen.

Unending drama in Abia State.
