The Rivers State governor, Gov. Rotimi Amaechi has organized with the state house of assembly to change a law bothering on the time frame for LGA elections. LGA elections are to hold on the 23rd of MAy 2015, just one week to the May 29th Handover date. Rivers State has been running care taker LG chairmen for over a year now and also has no functioning judiciary to swear the councilors and LG chairmen in or entertain any issues concerning the election with the constituting of a tribunal. Find below a reply by the PDP on it, (We will try to get the APC's view in the coming days).

Unreasnable.
Is it wrong holding elections again? Mimiko has held Ondo LGA to ransome for over 6years now and no hues about that.
Nyesom Wike reversing and upturning the mandate of duly elected chairmen? Shallow!!

which elected Chairmen? What kind of election is that? Anyway, Rivers State cannot be an extension of Amaechi source of revenue. Whether he likes it or not Governor Wike will REVERSE the sinister move and fire the RISIEC Chairman and his board. There is nothing anybody can do about it! Not even Buhari

Still unreasonable. The era of impunity is gone now. All checks and balances would be put in place to checkmate excesses of these heartless politicians.
Fire consume all prophets of doom!!

Well I guess the incoming Wike government may liaise with the National Assembly and repeal the law, if they have so much cohesion. Amaechi actually has constitutional powers to conduct elections. I don't advise he goes ahead to do that anyway, but if he does, then Wike would have to find a way to deal with it because they are constitutionally elected. The most important thing I think should happen is make a law at the federal level that compels these governors to conduct elections within a timeframe, I want to see an end to the amount of power these governors wield currently

You're wrong, Imo state situation is the worst.
Okorocha sacked 27 local government chairmen immediately he was sworn in 2011.
Despite Appeal Court Judgement that ordered the reinstatement of the LGA Chairmen, Okorocha disobeyed this date.

APPEAL COURT REINSTATES SACKED IMO LG CHAIRMEN , COUNCILLORS.

JULY 5, 2012 : AGENCY REPORTER
The Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri, Imo State on Thursday reinstated all local government chairmen and councillors sacked by Governor Rochas Okorocha in the 27 councils last year. The court held that the governor lacked the powers to sack elected governments at the third tier of government. The court, presided over by Justice Uwani Abbaji, also nullified the appointment of transition committee chairmen by the governor to replace the sacked council chairmen. Okorocha had, in his maiden broadcast in June 2011, announced the sacking of the elected council chairmen, and later appointed transitional committee chairmen to run the 27 council areas in the state. But the council chairmen challenged their removal from office in an Owerri High Court, arguing that the governor had no constitutional power to sack them. Consequently, the court, presided over by the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Benjamin Njemanze, held that the governor lacked the powers to remove the chairmen from office. The court also held that the council chairmen failed to prove that they were sacked from office as they claimed, resulting in the filing of the appeal by the council chairmen. Delivering judgment, Abbaji observed that all the submissions and arguments of the appellants and respondents were reviewed. She noted that the high court in its earlier judgment confirmed that the governor axiomatically had no power to sack the democratically elected chairmen. She further noted that the local government system was a constitutional matter and any action on the system should follow constitutional provisions. The court held that the governor had no right to remove democratically elected chairmen from office, and ordered that the local government chairmen be re-instated. The court, in its unanimous decision, further restrained the governor or any of his proxies from interfering in the administration of the local government system in the state.

conducting a local govnt election 6days to handover seems very dodgy why don't you continue with the care taker chairman and let the incoming govnt conduct an election.

@Ajoskele why would a sitting governor want to conduct election of local govt. 6 days to handover?? if not for selfish reasons to cause mayhem in the state. I feel he should just bow out humbly.

All Ameachi wants is for Rivers State is for violence to break out so the handover will not take place, But as God has delivered Rivers state from the hands of Ameachi ,the handover will hold and everthing will go as plan

To be fear, Jonathan has been sacking and appointing no heaven has fallen .
Now why can't Jonathan allow GMB administration to appoint the new IG?
Again why can't Jonathan allow GMB administration to conduct major recruitment exercise he decided to embark on with less than 5 weeks to his tenure expiration.
No law is stopping Amaechi to conduct democratic election for council chairmen

The obsession of some nairalanders with Amaechi may lead to heart attack for them sha. My prayers are with them and their families.

The same stalled elections have happened in other states like Ondo, anambra etc... but Amaechi's own is what gives them constant headache and hypertension. grin grin grin

It's not his fault that he is the master strategist and visionary na! tongue tongue tongue

What selfish reasons sir? That his candidates will win all the chairmanship and councillorship seats? Why the fear when we all claim Ameachi has lost touch with the electorates?
Afterall, he lost the last general and state elections. Let him go ahead with the elections and leave the rest to the voters in Rivers.
