Corrupt Leader Must Face The Consequences Of Their Action - Yemi Osinbajo by Nobody: 12:00am On May 02, 2015
Vice-President-elect, Prof.Yemi Osinbajo on Friday 1 April, 2015 explained how the Muhammadu Buhari administration would prosecute the anti-graft war, saying that Nigerians must question sources of wealth of the rich.

Osinbajo, while delivering the keynote address at the Abuja edition of The Platform, said the incoming administration would ensure zero tolerance for corruption by reforming the Justice system.

He said within the last few years, what the country had experienced is a situation where people get away with corrupt practices, noting that going forward, the incoming government would make sure that corrupt people suffer the consequences of their action.

He said when people are made to suffer the consequences of corrupt practices, it would send a strong message to everyone that the era of looting of the treasury was over.

He said, “We have always talked about zero tolerance for corruption but it is also important that people are made to understand that there will be consequence for corruption.

“What we have seen so far is that there is hardly any consequence and people simply get away with it and if you get away with it often, it sends a message to everyone, that there is no problem, and we need to fix that whole thinking that there has to be a consequence for corrupt practices.

“People have to explain for instance, if you are a public servant that how come that you have 50 houses. Somebody needs to ask you those questions and some of the reasons people get away with that is our criminal justice system.”

He said in view of the fact that the incoming administration would be taking the fight against corruption seriously, one of the reforms that would first be carried out is in the judicial system.

The Vice-President elect said the nation’s judicial system as presently constituted was slow, adding that this has made it easy for people to get away with criminal acts.

He said, ” Our criminal justice system needs to be fixed. The system is slow and it almost always ensures that people who have been charged with offenses would not be tried forever and after a while people forget that people are being tried.

“We have to fix that criminal justice system to ensure that criminal trials are speedy and that anyone who is guilty of an offense will be punished for that offense.

Osinbajo said in the area of policing, a country as big as that of Nigeria needs community policing.

He said it would be difficult for the Nigerian Police Force in its present form to fight crime in an effective manner owing to what he described as structural problems.

He said, “We need to look at law and order. The question of policing our society, how do we police this country. At the moment we know that policing is ineffective.

“If the police wants to deal with the criminals, you and I know that they are hampered from doing so, they are hampered structurally, they are hampered by the fact that they are not as well equipped as they ought to be, and they are not resourced as they ought to be, but the structural problem is the major one.

“A country of this size needs some form of community policing because criminality is always local, we need to have policemen who understand the local language, who live in the community, who understand the language. So there is a logic in it to have community policing.”

The event powered by Covenant Christian Centre had the theme “Business and governance.”

I agree with Mr. VP elect. In the same vein,Tinubu must explain how he became the owner of That gigantic hotel on the island,Radio and TV continental,Rennaisance hotel,Ikeja,First Nation Airlines,The Nation Newspapers,Shoprite,Alpha beta,Hi-tech construction and that heavenly residence in Bourdilon amongst others. I know his traducers would cite the fact that having worked for Mobil,he was already a rich man prior to his foray into politics,HOWEVER,WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW MUCH HE WAS PAID MONTHLY IN MOBIL!

A Professor regardless of the country or race should be able to show or demonstrate the quality of his intellect and reasoning capabilities in a meaningful, clear and honest manner. Osinbajo.. you continue to disappoint and further demonstrate that you have been compromised.

Asking Questions is inherent element of inquiry. But asking the WealthY the source of their or asking them to declare their assets presents a huge challenge with respect to Legal Culpability as well as the evident issues with proving intent or occurrence of a corrupt practice. what about immunity clause and previously discharged cases..i.e double jeopardy A legal principle which prevents people being tried for the same crime twice

You cannot say "going forward" please do not insult the intelligence of Nigerians because you are a pastor and professor. All across the world cases of corruption and misuse of public resources have been prosecuted in retrospect. The tactics you have used in your church to deceive your sheep cannot be used on all Nigerians.

1: DOMESTICATE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT so that the public can legally ask for records of how the government is executing GOOD GOVERNANCE

2: REMOVE IMMUNITY CLAUSE FOR PUBLIC OFFICERS SENATORS, GOVERNORS,PRESIDENTS AND VP etc so that when they commit crimes, they are promptly investigated and jailed as needed.

Stop Floundering you this stout mof@#ka. do the needful and stop stalling like leaders before you have done. STOP IT. PLEASE STOP ALL THIS DECEPTION

Most Nigerian leaders/politicians suffer common chronic greed. Their level of stealing is so alarming. Corruption is not totally nonexistence in developed countries like Japan & others, but still, there are significant development in their system & structure as a nation. A decade from now,I won't be surprise if Abacha's loots are still coming from Switzerland.

He is not speaking in a judicial capacity. He is in an executive role and must speak politically going forward. His utterance is in line with the promise of the party not to witch hunt but to reset the button and set a new expectation for social justice going foward.

Leave him alone....he is doing Great!
