…As labour unions shun exercise

By Peter Okutu

ABAKALIKI – GOVERNOR Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, Monday, commissioned the uncompleted Ochudo State Secretariat blocks and international market for the use.

Giving reasons for the commissioning, Elechi said the implication of allowing the projects to depreciate in value would be enormous if allowed, since the state had no funds to complete them before the end of the present administration.

However, the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC in the state shunned the commissioning exercise over alleged intimidation and victimization of workers in the state.

The secretariat, with 11 blocks of four floors building with 6,000 offices and 7,070 lock-up stores in the international market, were among the projects started seven years ago by the Elechi-led administration in the state.

The governor noted that the secretariat and market had not attained the final stages of completion, even though he had programmed to complete the projects before last December.

He added that despite the additional provisions of N2 billion and N3.2 billion for the completion of the projects respectively, funds were not available for the completion of the projects.

He said: “If we do not commission these projects, if we do not put them to use immediately, the depreciation effect will cost us more to bring them back to this stage we are now.

‘’So it will make sense that we should start using them now, given the state of below 100 per cent completion.

Change your caption. It should read "An example of the generation that *ruled* us and is *ruling* us".

Each state should by now be looking for ways to be internally sufficient and not waiting on govt allocation. I know that Ebonyi for sure receives one of the smallest allocations, so I can't blame him on that.

Elechi not Ebonyi disgracing the Igbos since 1980BC

Ebonyi has salt and rice, if properly developed, they can be the best state in NIGERIA.

Ebonyi is typical of most states...regardless of which party is in charge.

Many states prefer to chop abuja allawee.....rather than become the next Lee Kwam Yew.

As a result...when international oil prices drop....they are broke.

Whereas, if Gov Elechi had spent time developing an economy based on investors developing industries using Abakaliki Rice as raw materials...for say pharma, food, etc......his state coffers would have been full to the brim.

we should start concentrating more on these governors, imagine how much has gone into this project and it still not completed for years. even if you have the best president, a bad governor will bring suffering to the people.
