President Umaru Yar’Adua has proposed a pay cut for public office-holders, in response to the global economic crisis.

A statement by his spokesman, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, on Tuesday said the President would write the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to consider the proposal, because the current remunerations were untenable and unjustifiable in the present circumstances.

Addressing ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants and special assistants in the Presidency at a meeting in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Yar’Adua said he expected public officials to put the interest of the nation first at all times.
