TGI expands Ogun economic base with N5bn investment in poultry, food processing

The Tropical General Investment (TGI), a conglomerate of companies in agriculture, fishing and processing, chemical extractions, oil among others has concluded plans to expand its investment in Ogun state with about N5 billion, investing in poultry farming, food processing and chemical extractions.

TGI, a conglomerate of companies, including Chi Farms, Chi Retail, WACOT, Cormart, Fludor, Romson Oil Field Services Limited, ORC Fishing and Processing Limited among others, had earlier injected N5 billion in Ogun state’s economy through one of its subsidiaries – West African Cotton Company Limited (WACOT), engaging in cotton production and processing.

According to Jerome Shogbon, Chairman, Tropical General Investment (TGI), the group has created about 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and increased Ogun state economic base in few years of its presence in the state through the West African Cotton Company Limited (WACOT) N5 billion investments in cotton production and marketing of cotton lint to textiles mills.

Speaking during a working visit to Governor Ibikunle Amosun at Oke-Mosan Governor’s office in Abeokuta on Tuesday, Jerome Shogbon, Chairman, Tropical General Investment (TGI) said that though WACOT had already invested N5 billion in cotton production and created 30,000 jobs in the state, it however, planned huge expansion of its investment in agriculture and chemical extractions.

Shogbon, who revealed that the group had secured an expanse of land at Flower Gate, Sagamu interchange, along Lagos-Ibadan expressway, noted that the company was set to widen its scope of operation and investments by exploring various Agricultural value chain, including poultry farming, milling, food processing and chemical extractions to create more wealth and jobs.

He said, “We have got investments of N5 billion and 30,000 direct and indirect jobs already in Ogun state.

We are here in Ogun state as part of efforts to expand our investment. We want to thank His Excellency for helping us secure land at Flower Gate – We have already acquired land there and we are coming back soon for more land.

“Right now, through Chi Farms, we are investing in poultry farming and food processing, and we also investing in chemical extractions.”

Responding, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who received management team from Tropical General Investement (TGI) being led by its Chairman in Abeokuta, said the investment in the state economy was in consonance with government’s desire to make the state private sector – driven and raise revenue to run the state aside from the monthly Federal allocation.

While assuring the investors of total support of its administration, Governor Amosun said, “We need more of your presence in Ogun state. The only way to go is to have the state to be private sector-driven actually.

“With the dwindling Federal allocation, I am one of those that never believed in waiting for the Federal allocation to run the state. I know that the way to go is to be self-sustaining, create wealth and employ youths by creating employment opportunities.”

West African Cotton To Invest 5bn Naira In Ogun State

The West African Cotton Company says it will invest about five billion Naira in the agricultural sector in Ogun State.

The company will also invest in other value added chains in the sector.

Proposal for the investment was made known on Tuesday, at a meeting between the State government officials and the management of the West African Cotton Company.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun assured the management of the company, would-be investors and business owners in the State of a better and conducive business environment that would ensure good returns on investments.

While also promising the necessary political will to drive the State’s economy, the Governor said it had become imperative, in view of the dwindling resources from the Federation Account, to seek other sources of revenue for the state.

The Nigerian government had laid a plan to diversify the economy, tapping the agricultural potentials of the nation, to shift the economy from huge reliance on crude oil to agriculture which was the mainstay of the economy before crude oil was discovered.

West African Cotton Company is positioning to benefit from the diversification, with the planned investment in the agricultural sector in Ogun State.

The company is engaged in cotton ginning, selling of cotton lint to textile mills, export of cotton lint, gin motes and textile mill wastes.

The company also imports cotton from other neighbouring West African countries for onward sales to local textile mills, which would boost production of local fabric and improve quality.

first of all ogun is not a civil service state, it has the highest number industries in Nigeria so income tax is not gotten from civil servants, infact it gets more from the workers of the numerous industries. it already surpassed lagos in nos of industries. secondly it's a major transit for goods coming in and out of lagos
thirdly the fact that ogun state generates more IGR than anambra and abia speaks volume. we don't need to go forth and back on this

Twistaray:
OgunState government has stated that it would stop at nothing to position the State as the preferred destination for investors; not only in Nigeria but Africa as a whole.

Economic Adviser to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Mr. Rotimi Adewunmi, who stated this while speaking with THISDAY in his office at Abeokuta, the State capital, said the Ibikunle Amosun Administration was fully ready to explore the abundant resources in the State and open it for business.

Adewunmi, who was flanked by the Special Adviser to the governor on Commerce and Industry, Mr. Femi Ogunsola and Senior Special Assistant on Trade and Investment, Mrs Adenike Aboderin, said the government would use the forthcoming two-day investors’ forum scheduled to hold in Abeokuta on March 26 and 27 to sell its economic master plan to international investors.

He disclosed that the State government was particularly looking at investors from South East Asia and will also learn from Brazil in developing its housing sector. “What we are organising is not a summit where people come, talk and go but a summit where we can sell an economic master plan and do a follow-up after the forum,” Adewunmi said.

“We have recognised where our strength lies and we want to capitalise on those areas. We want to attract people who will invest in those areas as well as other big players into the State,” he added.

Special Adviser to the governor on Commerce and Industry, Ogunsola, said the State government was interested in developing the agriculture and agro-allied sector; mining, foundry, logistics and cottage industries.

“What we are trying to do is to create an enduring sustainable platform between the government of Ogun State, those who are investing here at the moment and those who will be coming in the future. Our plan is to position Ogun State as the preferred investment destination in Africa,” he said.

In her contribution, Senior Special Assistant on Trade and Investment, Aboderin, said research had shown that currently, Ogun State offers the best returns on investment.

She also noted that the office of Trade and Investment and the Bureau of Lands, Urban and Regional Planning are working hard to make the state an investor’s delight, especially with the One-Stop shop concept where all the papers needed by investors could be processed under one roof.

“Currently, research has shown that Ogun offers the best returns on investment. We therefore want to exploit this to woo investors into the State. We are not waiting until we have the entire infrastructure in place. We are starting by developing our roads and creating an environment that is conducive to business.

“A joint task force is in place to ensure security and what we offer investors are in tandem with global standards. The response to our call has been overwhelming as investors are really hungry to do business here,” she stated.
