1. Cucumber
There has been great increase in the demand for cucumber due to the discovery of its health benefits.
Cucumbers sell all the year in the market though the price flunctuates due to some demand and supply theory.
There are different types of cucumber varieties that matured at different time.
The most marketable in mile 12 at present is the "Marketer and Murano" variety a Technisem product.
Followed by the continental seed cucumber.
Any other product might likely be rejected or sold at a lower price compared to the current market price

Packaging
Cucumbers are sold with poultry feed bags of 25kg.
Though the cucumber content is between 30-35kg

Price Range
Price flunctuates between N1500 -N6,000 per bag.

2. Tomatoes
Tomatoes like I use to say has no enemy.
Most varieties of tomatoes are generally accepted in the market but with variation in price.
Good quality tomatoes will be sold first before considering the low grades.
Most cases its not worth it going to market with a poor grade tomatoes.
The most popular varieties of tomatoes usually referred to as Hausa tomatoes in the market come from the stable of Technisem.
"The buffallo, Roma vf, Tropimech, etc.
The Yoruba Tomato also called kerewa and beske are from the old breeds.
The Yoruba tomato can only sell when there is no Hausa tomato in the market.
There are some other varieties from across the boarders. The quality are better and therefore command higher price than the Hausa tomatoes

Packaging
Hausa basket 50-55kg
Medium basket 30-35kg
Small basket 12-15kg

Price range
Hausa basket N3,000 -N25,000
Medium basket N2,000-N14,000
small basket N500-N5,000

Amen sir.
As regards rainfall, most countries have learnt to invest in irrigation which means more dams are constructed and boreholes were drilled.
As an intending farmer, the options are
1. Source for land near river side, dams or boreholes
2. As a farmer group, collectively one can contribute to drill a borehole.
Rain fall is gradually reducing over time. Clever farmers should work along with irrigation

Farmers in my area use broadcasting method in planting efo and ewedu.
The irrigation that will best suit this is sprinkler irrigation or use quarter inch flexible pipes connected with shower heads.
Ewedu and Efo markets are not highly demanding all season round. The demand for it is mainly dry season period. Almost all farmers have ewedu and efo in their farm.
Its advisable to choose vegetable planting base on market demand

yes o. but I think there's high demand during dry season if one can use irrigation system. moreover, ewedu and efo has less problem associated with it at least we jjc farmer can start from there. thanks

You are right.
Ewedu and Efo are scarce commodities during the dry season. Using irrigation makes a lot of difference and one makes more money

Introducing new products require work but it can be done. People are usually resistance to change until they see the result.
One will need to do intensive marketing from shops to shops or door to door to introduce the new products. With time it will be accepted.

3. Radish

There are several varieties of radish.
White radish, red radish, mixed colour radish etc
Radishes are a fast-growing, annual, cool-season crop. The seed germinates in three to four days in moist conditions. Under average conditions, the crop matures in three to four weeks.

Harvesting periods can be extended by making repeat plantings, spaced a week or two apart.

Companion plant
Radishes can be useful as companion plants for many other crops. This is probably because their pungent odour deters such insect pests as aphids, cucumber beetles, tomato hornworms, squash bugs and ants. They can function as a trap crop, luring insect pests away from the main crop.

Marketable Variety
White radish

Packaging
25kg bag is used for packaging

Price Range
N1500 - N4,000

Peak period and seasonality
All year round
