The Anambra Government on Wednesday banned the
operation of private and commercial motorcycles and
tricycles from major highways in the state with effect
from June 1. This is contained in a statement signed
by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and
Tourism, Dr Uju Nwogu, in Awka.

“All motorcycle and tricycle operators in the state will
from next week Monday, June 1, be barred from
plying the Enugu-Onitsha highway, as well as Arthur
Eze Avenue and Zik’s Avenue in Awka.

“Similarly, it will be illegal for all motorcycles, either
private or commercial, to ply the Onitsha-Owerri
expressway, Awka Road, Borromew-Upper Iweka-
Bridge Head road, Old and New Market Roads and
Oguta Road, all in Onitsha. “In Nnewi, they are
prohibited from the Nnewi-Nnobi road and Nnewi-Oba
road.

“All commuters who must ply these restricted roads
are by this announcement advised to use tricycles or
the taxis and buses provided by the state government
and other commercial vehicle owners,” the statement
read.

While noting that the law enforcement agencies would
ensure strict compliance to this directive, the
statement warned that operators caught violating the
directive would have their motorcycles or tricycles
impounded.

It, however, said that a fine of N5,000 for
motorcycles and N10,000 for tricycles, for first
offenders, would be paid to retrieve such impounded
motorcycles or tricycles. It warned that subsequent
arrest for a second violation of the directive would
attract outright confiscation of the motorcycle or
tricycle by the state government. The statement
further warned motorcycle operators in the state to
desist from carrying more than one passenger on a
trip.

Well ......... Good policy but wrong timing.
1. Any government policy with apparent harsh outcome, no matter how good it may appear , should first be communicated to the masses by way of town hall meetings and random discussions. This would help convince the people on the advantages of such. Otherwise they would reject such out rightly .
2. Adequate alternative measures should have been put in place way b4 implementation of such policy so as to cushion some of the expected rise in unemployment . Things like provision of taxis , buses , tricycles by way of soft loans and grants .
3. Such harsh decisions are better made in 2nd tenure , else it could cost the governor his reelection bid. Ask Oshiomole and BRF know why they did I so in their 2nd tenures. Or better still find out from Ikedi Ohakim part of the reasons he couldn't secure reelection in 2011.
3. Anambra state is unique because it has the highest indigenous assembly plant for motorcycles. Hence banning it's use in the state would be tantamount to more economic loss.

Re: Anambra Govt Bans Motorcycles & Tricycles On Highways by winnieG1(m): 2:23pm On May 27, 2015
If the Major Highways the state government is talking about are only
1. Odumegwu Highway,(Head bridge to Upper Iweka, Onitsha)
2. Onitsha -Enugu Road (from Onitsha to Awka)
3.Onitsha-Owerri Road

then It is a welcomed development but any other roads aside these 3 highways will have adverse effect on the state and her citizens. Anambra has the highest Motocycle assembly companies and market in Africa situated at Nnewi and many were employed from that. The ban by other states in Nigeria has already created many loophole such as kidnapping and other crimes. With high trading activities going on within the state (Onitsha and Nnewi), Okada and tricycles are major means of movement. The Automobile industry hold a very good stake in the economy of the state. It is not only going to affect the lower and middle class but also some upper class like Innoson (Innoson Motocycles), Carter, Ngobros (KOTEC), IBETO (Ibeto battery), Kymco Auto bike Company, Bajaj Ltd, etc. Also over 80% of middle and lower class depend on the operations of okada and tricycle for their daily businesses.

I will advice Governor Obiano to only restrict the ban to these 3 major Highways but any extension will see his people calling for his head and he will definitely loose his 2nd term governorship bid. This issue came up during Peter Obi's tenure and after wide consultation, he handled it with utmost care. Any one who is advising the governor on this should take note.

My friend, if you had been to onitsha and nnewi before you will know this is a very unintelligent decision. The decision may work in other states but never in Onitsha and Nnewi. This is avenue for overzealous policemen to extort okada riders both private and commercial.

Stop Man, u've never been to Onitsha and do not realize that Onitsha is the commercial Capital of West Africa, maybe u do not realize why Anambra State is the only viable state in Nigeria, the kind of revenue generated by Onitsha and Nnewi is enormous for govt. If Obiano tries this in some major express roads apart from the 3 I mentioned above, the kind of gridlock that will hit Onitsha alone, Oshodi gridlock will be a child's play,

why the insult,i thought it was just a friendly discussion.BTW it will definately work in Awka the state capital, since there are just pockets of businesses there, with more of the organised corporate sector, administrative headquarters, civil servants, students, hotels, entertainment etc But Onitsha and Nnewi may be a hard nut for the goverbor to crack, with the volume of transactions going on in this two zones and the number of Nigerians and foriegners, especially from neigbouring countries like cameroun,Guinea,Gabon,Togo etc coming in for one transaction or the other,it may be difficult.
But thankGod it is not a total ban but on few selected highways, which will enhance more security and safety of life.
Re: Anambra Govt Bans Motorcycles & Tricycles On Highways by oneeast1: 6:14pm On May 27, 2015
If it worked in Lagos then it can work in Onitsha. You people should stop making annoying comments. Tricycles will compliment where bikes use to be before while long buses and cabs will be on the major roads and streets.

Of course there is no going back on the policy because by 1st June it will be all over for this nuisance called bikes. The annoying thing is that it is people from other states that brought this nuisance to our state.
