francizy:A chemical substance present in water, especially in areas that are close to dump sites. kills younger fishes faster . the lower it is in your water the better. if you have high amonia content, you will have to change your water everyday. 1 Like |

Yommiefish:how do you distinguish male and female catfish? Pls I will like to know with illustrations If you don mind |
Re: Catfish Breeders: A Snapshot Of My One Room Hatchery by Yommiefish(m): 6:18pm On Jun 29, 2015 |
moscyt:The male and female of the African catfish can be easily recognized. The male has a distinct sexual papilla, elongated and located just behind the anus. This sexual papilla is usually red at the tip for sexually ready males. It is absent in females. A sexually ready female has a swollen, usually reddish genital opening. A view from the top also gives a female African catfish away since either side of the belly appears swollen.

More and more young Africans are discovering that they can make farming a profitable career. Enayon Anthony is from a rural part of Delta state in Nigeria. Anthony loved the catfish his mother raised and cooked for family meals throughout his youth. He even enjoyed feeding the fish. Eventually, he determined that fish could provide him with a livelihood. “You can be a farmer and still make a good and honest living from it,” says the successful fish farmer and YALI Network member. https://youngafricanleaders.state.gov/nigerian-catfish-farmer-believes-in-african-dream/?print=print Follow us: www.Facebook.com/ NaijaCatfishBreeders |

hey yommiefish how do you control your ph in the tarpulene hatchery |
Re: Catfish Breeders: A Snapshot Of My One Room Hatchery by Yommiefish(m): 3:59pm On Jul 10, 2015 |
row2ray:with the aid of a mini dam at the top of the vat, I am able to. The mini dam contains limestones and other chemical plus my pH meter handy to watch for any significant changes that may occur. |

Yommiefish:i have a concrete hatchery and made sure my ph was neutral range before i spread eggs.. later i fount that it had moved to 8.5-8.9 ... i operate a static water sytem, what could have caused the spike |
Re: Catfish Breeders: A Snapshot Of My One Room Hatchery by Yommiefish(m): 1:33pm On Jul 11, 2015 |
row2ray:Water PH do change with time. 8.5 pH level isn't that bad for hatching, it is its fluctuation or rapid drop that could impact negatively on lavae. |
Re: Catfish Breeders: A Snapshot Of My One Room Hatchery by fzero: 4:25pm On Jul 11, 2015 |
Yommiefish:haba how can you say 8.5 P.H isn't that bad for hatching |
Re: Catfish Breeders: A Snapshot Of My One Room Hatchery by Yommiefish(m): 7:10pm On Jul 11, 2015 |
fzero:8.5 isn't bad for hatching. I can say that over again. The only thing you watch for is its sudden drop. Please consult your materials for desire water pH for hatching. |

either way, there is no need to argue, i have flushed the pond, my ph eventually got to 10.3.. but i agree with yommie 8.5 is borderline ok.. and sudden drops will kill the fish but a ph of 10.3 like i got is faaaaaar from ok, and all my fish should be dead, even if it was a gradual drop over the course of 12 hours |
Re: Catfish Breeders: A Snapshot Of My One Room Hatchery by Yommiefish(m): 1:44pm On Jul 13, 2015 |
row2ray:I agree bro. 10.3 seems unreasonable. But, if your pH soar like this, should you not stop allowing the water from staying too long in your pond before spawning. The idea of storing water before use is for areas with low pH like Benin. |
