On a more serious note....Obama did not legalize gay marriage.

What happened was that some years ago, two gay men who lived in the US state of Ohio(which at the time did not recognize gay marriage)...got married in the State of Maryland (which did).

When one of the men died back home in Ohio...his husband applied to be listed on the death certificate as his spouse.

The State refused...hence Oberfegell vs Kasich(at the lower courts) and v Hodges (at the Supreme). (Oberfegell is the husband of the dead man, Kasich is the governor of Ohio State.Hodges is the Director of the Ohio Dept of Health..a position analogous to our States Commissioner for Health in Nigeria)..

The Supreme Court...in a majority decision...found that the American Constitution's intent is to provide every American with dignity...hence if gay marriage helped provide that dignity.....then gay marriage is legal under the Constitution.(That is a rough way of looking at it.A nearly similar decision was made in 1973 by the then Supremes legalizing abortion....Roe vs Wade.).

Hence...gay marriage is now legal. Obama did nothing(though he obviously is not opposed). If he was opposed...there is nothing he can do...save propose an amendment to the Constitution making gay marriage illegal.....which is a long and complex process...and which may not succeed.

Modified: More details of the infamous or famous case here..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obergefell_v._Hodges.

Did you say he didn't legalize gay marriage? Yeah he didn't. The same way Pilate did not kill Jesus. undecided

That's good, wat u re tellin us is dat u support gay marriage, just say. Ur mind and let us know

No...the post was largely for informative purposes. It was not meant to indicate my opinion...whether for or against....for gay marriage.

In this case....Obama did not sign a law legalizing gay marriage across America....as that would have violated the concept of federalism as the Americans understand it.(It must be pointed out Obama approves of gay marriage....at least right now';in 2008 he was opposed to it.).

What happened was that a gay man approached the Supreme Court to get his state to recognize his gay marriage....and the Supreme court in essence found that the Constitution of the US guarantees his right to gay marriage.....ie they made a judgement as to the intent of the Constitution.(Which is what the Supreme Court of the US usually does....sometimes).

Which leads us to a major problem in American society...whether the Supreme Court in making such judgements is legislating from the bench...so to speak.

For Obama to legalise gay marriage....he would have to have a gay marriage law to sign....which would have to be approved by both the House and the Senate. The House is controlled by Republicans....who oppose gay marriage . The Senate is controlled by Democrats...who mostly support gay marriage...a few may be against. So far....no such law has been approved by Congress for signing by Obama.....and it won't get out of Congress if it would. Then there is the issue of American federalism. Laws in America cannot just automatically apply to all the 50 states.....each state has its set of laws.

The problem you have is that you think that America is like Nigeria. It isn't.States in America have more power and leeway than your average Nigerian States.Ideally....for a gay marriage law to be passed in America...it has to also be approved by 2/3RD's of the state Assemblies...and as at last month....over 30 states were opposed to gay marriage....5 had approved.

So,for gays...their last hope so to speak was the Supreme Court. In essence....the court had to find that the American Constitution guaranteed a right to personal dignity....and such dignity guarantees a right to gay marriage for anyone who wants it. Which is what five out of the nine Supreme Court judges found.

My original post was for informative purposes BTW.....NOT to indicate pro- or anti-gay agenda.

You seem to underplay leadership in its true meaning. Before this bill passed 4-3 (or 5-4: can't remember the exact right ratio right now). Obama's stand on gay marriage was 'mumbled', but now that a majority of US Supreme Court justices voted in favour of it his support for gay rights is now unequivocal.

My submission is that his rhetorical approval of it carries a lot of weight as the most powerful man on earth (that's according to Americans sha) and he's definitely not blameless.

My submission has nothing to do with you though. As a Nigerian, I'm almost sure you're against it.

- On May 9, 2012, Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to publicly declare support for the legalization of same-sex marriage.

- Before Obama became the President of America, only 2 states (Massachusetts May 2004 and Connecticut Nov 2008) legalized same sex marriage. California issued license to same sex couple briefly in 2008, but stopped it after 5 months.

- On November 6, 2012, Maine, Maryland, and Washington became the first states to legalize same-sex marriage through popular vote.

-Before this ruling by supreme court legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, same sex marriage had been legalized in 36 states. This means 34 states legalized same sex marriage under Obama administration.

-This is Obama's agenda. Without Obama as the president, this wouldn't have succeeded.

While Obama is approving of same sex marriage.....decisions by individual states to legalise or recognise same sex marriage are the states alone.

In other words this would have happened even if Obama was opposed to same sex marriage.

Again....America is less centralized than Nigeria.

Modified: ....

The legal issues surrounding same-sex marriage in the United States are determined by the nation's federal system of government, in which the status of a person, including marital status, is determined in large measure by the individual states. Prior to 1996, the federal government did not define marriage; any marriage recognized by a state was recognized by the federal government, even if that marriage was not recognized by one or more states, as was the case until 1967 with interracial marriage which some states banned by statute.
Civil same-sex marriage ceremony being performed in San Francisco City Hall in June 2008.

Prior to 2004, same-sex marriage was not performed in any U.S. jurisdiction. It was subsequently legalized in different jurisdictions through legislation, court rulings,[57] tribal council rulings,[58] and popular vote in referenda.[59][60][61]

The Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell renders moot any remaining legal challenges, as it specifically orders states to both issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and to recognize as valid marriages performed in other states.[62]

What we are saying is that Obama's support and public declaration pushed this agenda through. Same-sex marriage, bestaility and legalized marijuana.

We dont even need to quote his numerous speech canvassing for legalization of gay marriage. Even using threat.

Obama is currently urging religion houses to change their teachings to accept same-sex marriage. He also is threatening taxing them if they dont comply with same-sex marriage celebration.

Senate Approves Bill that
Legalizes Sodomy and
Bestiality in U.S. Military

NOVEMBER 4, 2013
The repeal of the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t
tell” policy was hailed by lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender (LGBT) activists as a supreme
victory for the Obama administration in
September. But now, those outraged by the repeal
say they are further angered by the revision of
yet another military technicality.
As Stars and Stripes is reporting, White House and
Pentagon officials have fielded uncomfortable
queries on whether they are working to
decriminalize sex with animals as part of efforts
to update the Uniform Code of Military Justice
(UCMJ).
Interestingly, Congress is reportedly poised to
remove the only specific reference to bestiality in
the UCMJ, though officials say its removal is
merely a legal technicality and does not represent
any fundamental change for servicemembers and,
by extension, service animals, the publication
reports.
The text in question to be repealed reads:
a) Any person subject to this chapter who
engages in unnatural carnal copulation with
another person of the same or opposite sex or
with an animal is guilty of sodomy. Penetration,
however slight, is sufficient to complete the
offense.
(b) Any person found guilty of sodomy shall be
punished as a court-martial may direct.
Among those who expressed their distaste in the
removal were members of the People for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who allege
White House officials are not considering the
seriousness of the matter. “Our office has been
flooded with calls from Americans who are upset
that this ban has been repealed — and for good
reason,” officials wrote in a letter to White House
Press Secretary Jay Carney, according to Politico .
“As we outlined in the attached letter sent
yesterday to the secretary of defense, animal
abuse does not affect animals only — it is also a
matter of public safety, as people who abuse
animals very often go on to abuse human
beings.”
Not surprisingly, conservative pundits were also
among the dissenting voices. Having already
slammed the Obama administration for “using the
military to advance [its] radical social agenda,”
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins
told CNSNews.com , “Well, whether it was
inadvertent or not, they have also taken out the
provision against bestiality. So now, under the
Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), there’s
nothing there to prosecute bestiality.”
