First Presidential run (1992)

Atiku contested and won the SDP presidential primary in Adamawa State in March 1993. Moshood Abiola, 55 years old, and Babagana Kingibe, 48, had also won in their respective states. 27 aspirants from various states converged in Jos in March 1993 to contest the SDP presidential ticket at the national convention of the party.
At the end of the first ballot, Abiola came first with 3,617 votes. Kingibe came a close second with 3,225 votes and Atiku came third with 2,066 votes.

Second presidential run (2006–2007)
On 25 November 2006 Abubakar announced that he would run for President. On 20 December 2006, he was chosen as the presidential candidate of the Action Congress (AC).[10]

On 14 March 2007, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the final list of 24 aspirants for 21 April presidential election. Abubakar's name was missing from the ballot. INEC issued a statement stating that Abubakar's name was missing because he was on a list of persons indicted for corruption by a panel set up by the government.[11] Abubakar headed to the courts on 16 March to have his disqualification overturned.

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled on 16 April that INEC had no power to disqualify candidates.[12]

The ruling allowed Abubakar to contest the election, although there were concerns that it might not be possible to provide ballots with Abubakar's name by 21 April, the date of the election. On 17 April, a spokesman for INEC said that Abubakar would be on the ballot.

According to official results, Abubakar took third place, behind PDP candidate Umaru Yar'Adua and ANPP candidate Muhammadu Buhari, with approximately 7% of the vote (2.6 million votes). Abubakar rejected the election results and called for its cancellation, describing it as Nigeria's "worst election ever."

2011 Presidential Run

Atiku made another attempt for Nigeria's presidency in 2011. He contested for PDP's ticket but lost to former President Jonathan. 3542 votes were cast during the primaries. Goodluck Jonathan received the highest number of votes—2736—representing 78% of the total votes cast. He was trailed by Abubakar Atiku who scored 805 votes. Mrs. Sarah Jubril received one vote (meaning she was the only person who voted for herself in the election).

2014-2015 Presidential Run
Atiku contested for APC's ticket for 2015 Presidential election in a party primary held in Lagos in December 2014, but he lost. He came third, trailing behind Rabiu Kwankwaso who came second. Current President Buhari won the ticket that time.

Will Atiku ever realise his dream of Presiding Nigeria?
