Tolu Ogunlesi To Emerge As Special Assistant To Muhammadu Buhari On New Media

Reports suggest journalist and blogger Tolu Ogunlesi is in the frame to be named President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on New Media.

Officials at the presidency told PREMIUM TIMES Mr. Ogunlesi has undergone security screening and his appointment is to be announced in the coming days.

Ogunlesi will assume the role played by Reno Omokri in the Jonathan era.

Mr. Ogunlesi is a prolific writer, an avid Twitter user and a columnist with the Punch among a host of online sites. He kicked off his journalism career with the defunct 234NEXT Newspapers and campaigned for Buhari during the recently concluded electioneering season.

He enjoys a huge following in the social media space as well with 144,000 Twitter users hanging on to his every Tweet.

Mr. Ogunlesi, who trained as a pharmacist, was Features Editor at 234NEXT newspapers. In 2009 he was awarded the Arts and Culture prize in the annual CNN Multichoice African Journalism Awards.

He won the CNN award again in 2013 in a different category. He was also shortlisted for the inaugural PEN/Studzinski literary prize.
