ABUJA-Former Deputy Speaker, House of
Representatives, Hon. Chibudom Nwuche has urged
President Mohammadu Buhari to remove oil subsidy, saying that is the only way to tackle corruption.

Nwuche said that the continued subsidization of
petroleum products will only benefit the rich while
the supposedly poor masses get poorer. The former Deputy Speaker spoke to Journalists in
Abuja at the weekend. He called on the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN and the organized labour to support the president for the removal of the subsidy.

According to him, the subsidy does not also benefit
most people in the south east and south south zones of the country.

He said: “I used to be in the Oil and Gas sector before going into politics. I believe that subsidy is not good for Nigeria. I say this without bias in the sense that those who benefit from the subsidy are not the poor. It is those traders who engaged in slope, who engage in round tripping that benefit from the subsidy.

“Which subsidy of petroleum products? People are
buying the products above the controlled price. I
don’t think you can buy AGO at the official price in
Ekeremor or in Ahoada. “The price is determined by the middlemen and the dealers. So the subsidy they are paying is to enrich those people to buy private jets at our expense. IPMAN and the rest of the Labour unions should come together and support the president to remove subsidy. It is a waste of money. It is fraudulent. It is allowing corruption.”

Nwuche who was a former Federal Lawmaker
between 1999 and 2003 also appealed to present
Buhari not to forget the people of Niger delta in his
government. He specifically urged him dredge the Calabar sea port and site projects in the zone to develop the area.

“We want the Buhari’s government to see our people from the South-South as his people. The South-South has traditional alliance with the north until today. That alliance was strengthened from Tafawa Balewa’s time. Our people will give his government all the support he needs to realise his objectives for Nigeria. In return we want him to take us as his own and assist us to site projects in our area.

“To empower our youths, many of whom are jobless and to empower our businessmen who didn’t get any patronage from the government for so many years. For instance, if you look at the South-South, the major road from the Refinery in Portharcourt to Bayelsa, Yenagoa to Benin the road is not good, nothing has been done and as far as Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers State, the road is in a total disrepair. “We urge him to assist us to make that road function. And there is also the issue of Calabar Sea Port which is important to us. Our traders have to land their goods in Lagos and then pay an additional cost by road to take them to Portharcourt and the East. That is not necessary. We want them to dredge the Calabar port and make it functional to be an International Sea port like in Lagos. It will help Nigeria and it is also even nearer to some parts of the North than Lagos. Those from Benue State doing business get their goods from Lagos.

“If the Calabar port is made functional, they can get
their goods from there, likewise some parts of the
North. So our priorities should be to dualize and
repair the road from Calabar to Akwa Ibom through
Aba to Portharcourt, then through Ikot Abasi to
Portharcourt and then from Portharcourt to Bayelsa
to Edo State.

“These are the major routes in the South-South and
that is where the oil production and distribution to all parts of the country is carried out. He should also ensure that our people are given their fair share of appointments at the federal level because we are one country and we have our own problems in the South- South”, he said.

Who does it benefit? A big question.

The rich oil marketters are obviously benefitting more from the subsidy programme but some other people, including the poor, will argue that this is the only social benefit they enjoy from the government.

There is so much uncertainties among the masses as to what will result in its total removal. The new government is not immune to this dilema.
