I still believe the driver must have been driving at excessive speed and possibly beyond his limits. The force the car (<1600kg) exerted on that tree to cause collapse of rearward structures would have been massive and similar to an hand grenade .

Nothing less than 120-150 mph speed from my assumption

Looking at those pics again looks like the driver lost control and slammed the B billar into the the tree, the driver and individual behind him would have been most likely DOA while the passenger side may have a fighting chance.
