Please what have I done? You just want to accuse me this morning because THREE of the agencies posted are specifically for abuse/child abuse (which involves both male and female children). Kindly go through the post again. Only project Alert is for women and I'm sure they take up all cases too. So what are you on about, where is the double standards now.

Btw, what's stopping you from browsing the net to come up with agencies who are involved in these things?
Pls, help me out. Use google, help get numbers and addresses of agencies biko. It's not about standd alone, play your own part too.
A nairalander did his research and got two of those agents up there. And didn't you see the one for Lagos State.? Is that for only women or girls?
Kevinberry, kindly help search for agencies in charge on Rape victims/Cases/Reports so that I can also put it up for everyone to see. Thanks

Crying blue murder, why didn't you do the research yourself....hypocrite....we all know how this will end..this double standards...we all know how it will end...

Focusing only on a particular gender will yield no result.....

You can publish names and do whatever you like but it won't change anything if the society focus only on the culprits...

Sex education is a must. If we, as parents, don't teach our children about sex they will learn it from other sources. Namely; friends, TV and porn. Non of these three sources are ideal. I, for one, do not wish to trust my child's friends to teach them about a subject as important to their future happiness as sex. Yes I said happiness. TV distorts what relationships are really like, and creates false expectations. Porn also creates expectations, ideals and attitudes that are counter productive to healthy relationships.

Many children begin watching porn at a very early age. This puts images and thoughts into that child's mind that their bodies and maturity level are unable to handle. These types of "entertainment" also usually show women as docile and agreeable to any and all situations and acts. They are not respected and are seldom treated well. They are simply there for the pleasure of the man. Nothing more. Is it any wonder that these children grow up thinking this same way? Men thinking anything goes and women thinking that acting this way is what "love" is about. Smh

If we want to raise health, happy and well adjusted children, education and example are the key. Children need to be taught about good and bad touches. They need to be empowered to say "no" to elders in this situation. Let's face it, we teach our children to respect and obey those older and in a position of authority. Give them the strength and the permission to go against that authority in this situation. Anyone who wishes to harm my child does not deserve respect, and that child has my permission to do and say anything necessary to protect themselves. Children also need to know that we will always take their side in this case. Many crimes are not reported because the victim is intimidated or is made to feel they are to blame.

We need to show our children at home how a husband should treat his wife, and the way a wife should treat her husband. If our children see love and respect at home they will want that same thing in their relationships. If we teach them about sex in a loving and mature way, they will know the difference when they are faced with all the images that are thrown at them daily by porn, TV and social media. They will look at the world around them with the knowledge they need to make good choices.

We've heard it said for many generations now, "Things were not like this when I was a kid." This is more true today than in any generation in the past. Kids are faced with so much more sexual pressure than ever before. They are exposed to so many more sexual images than we were. They are becoming sexually active younger and younger. Don't let them go out in the world without the "armor" and strength needed to withstand all that society and the media will hit them with these days. Until we take charge of sex education at home and in our communities, empower our child and keep our eyes on their comings and goings this situation will only get worse. The answer to this problem starts at home.

Thanks for the post Texanomaly, the truth is that a huge percentage of Nigerian parents have no time to teach their children anything, after the time spent running around to look for daily bread, to the fact that most parents know little or nothing about child education.

The best bet is to reach out to places/centres where children can be found and to teach and sensitize them on these issues.
The parents themselves need adequate training and all hands must be on deck to achieve this.

So far, the authorities I have contacted are yet to reply and so I have to keep reaching out to a lot of agencies in order to make headway.

I'll never understand why people have children they are unwilling or unable to teach and raise properly. undecided No offense but maybe this is the problem. Maybe I'm wrong here, but I thought it was a parents job to raise well adjusted, properly educated, independent adults who are a positive influence on society. Perhaps it's the attitude that children are property and not a responsibility that is the problem. No vex.

Everything a child learns in this life is built on the foundation constructed in the home. This foundation is the base on which all learning depends.

I walk past some surburbs in Lagos and I see little children roaming around unaided, toddlers naked and young girls left to tthemselves all day and I just can't help but agree with the people who think that child abuse/rape is majorly a fault of the parents.
It's really pathetic out there but then do we keep mute and continue to feel good in our comfort zone.

No we don't keep mute. We become uncomfortably verbal. As I said, attitudes need to change. Some very good resources have been mentioned. We need to take it a step further and take responsibility for ourselves and those we bring into this world. We must protect those who cannot protect themselves, while we continue to affect change as best we can. As always, change begins with the person looking back at us from the mirror.

You are welcome, honestly we need more of your type in the society,i mean those who are genuinely concerned about the evils in the society. If there's one thing i've learnt it is the fact that here in Nigeria, people only begin to fall in line and do the right thing when a bit of force comes into the equation it even happens to me too that is what informed such a stance... More power to your elbow....

This is the root cause of the problem, bad parenting. This stems from bad parenting been passed down to another set of parents.

To be honest, there is little that can be done.

Lol, Tex. You're doing something and I commend your efforts but honestly some problems can never be completely solved.

For young ladies I suggest every sensible parent should try to invest in some form of basic self defense classes. In the heat of the moment a jab to the pelvis could give the girl ample opportunity to escape Her assailant.

That's that I have helped

I think assuming parental guidance can curb sexual assaults is a gross over-simplification of the issue at hand.

The reason that Nature-Nuture debate has raged for so long is because even the most eminent of psychologists still can't decide if human beings are born intrinsically bad or raised to be bad, or if it's a combination of both.

Rape like most other crimes is a reactive crime, but unlike most of the major crimes it is also very opportunistic in nature.

The generally impulsive nature of most rapes makes it very difficult to predict who turns out rapist, which means that it can be almost impossible for parents to detect in problem behaviour in their kids.

A child who steals often might become a thief in adulthood. A child who exhibits a mean streak or animal cruelty could grow up to murder.

How do you detect a child rapist? And how can you teach him not to rape?

That's why I think the only way to deal with rape is self defence at personal level, and institute punitive measures at Government level

Re: How Do We Effectively Curb Sexual Offences In Nigeria? by UjSizzle(f): 9:29am On Aug 04, 2015
Education. Yes, I agree education will go a long way to curbing the instances of rape we encounter every day, but this time around we have to shift the focus.

There are people who say that even though the woman shouldn't take the blame, she should be accorded some responsibility. Beautiful. The world is a bad place and it only helps to limit the odds in your favor everytime you step out of the house.

But women get the memo; it's been over stressed. You WILL get raped. Period. It's important she doesn't do anything suggestive to the opposite sex. Don't smile too much. Don't flirt too much. Don't accept a drink from a guy at the bar if you won't sleep with him. Don't enjoy or even revel in the delight of the chase (especially when it involves gifts like that's not supposed to be normal) because you WILL be raped. Everytime a woman dares to enjoy life, she's asking for it.

But women have done these things-- we've moved about with the constant fear that our right to consensual sex cam be stripped from us at anytime.
We get the memo. And it hasn't worked. There have been recorded cases of rape against women from the most moral countries in the world with respect to modesty in dressing and social activity. And there have been recorded cases against children too all over the world.

Women have changed. Laws have changed. But the education given to the male child hasn't been attacked with as much severity as the first two. Men are predators, true. They are hunters, true again. But they do not have to be sociopaths. Shift the awareness of how inhumane rape is to the men for once. Spend twice as much time as has been spent teaching women to be decent, and focus on getting the disgusting act of rape from the men.

Let the legislators enact laws that gives stringent punishment to offenders. If there's the possibility of having an executive arm of the police handle crimes of this nature (if it doesn't already exist) that will be superb.

And then the general population at large need to be sensitized. Rape happens because there are masochistic people who believe they can prey on the weakness of others. If we can stop being afraid of them, then they have nothing. What's to prey on when there's no visible weakness to exploit hmm?
Also rape victims are simply victims. They shouldn't be made to live in shame because of the nature of our society. We need a platform where men and women who have suffered sexual abuse can talk about their experience-- the fear, shame, and how they were able to get past it and integrate fully into society again.

There's so much work to be done. Where do we start? *sigh*

How do we prevent?
It's simple. What are the factors that cause people to rape ? Quench them.

What are the factors that cause people to be raped? Quench them.

Case closed.

The first bolded is the gospel truth. It's beginning to sound like the society endorses rape if the victim falls within the bracket of people seen to be indecently dressed. Instead of condemning the act and punishing the culprit, the victim is shamed and blamed.

@second bolded... I guess we will have to start from our homes and immediate environment.

*sigh*
