kettykin: Many people that were not Igbo identified with the biafrans cause for whatever personal reasons they saw fit. That does not mean they are Igbo. It is like trying to argue with bukola Saraki that he is Yoruba, while the man sometimes identifies as different. 5 Likes |

omonnakoda:There were Igbo groups but they were not under one umbrella as Igbo. The British created the Igbo tag just like they did others. So, I believe that you will have no problem if people from Ogun state say they are not Yorubas just because it's the British that created the tag anyways. 3 Likes |

B69U: Does he have to be Igbo, could he not be from another minority clan who have been influenced by Igbo culture but whom are not Igbo. The biggest problems with Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and Fulani is we fail to adequately acknowledge other ethnicities consistently trying to violently assimilate them 7 Likes |

fr3do: Dude you should let them be. Notice they are just ignoring you, an ika, and following in the tone of music with the yolobas and the rest of the tribalistic miscreant... One thing I've learned about SE igbos is they need validation of their hatred for anioma and love paying attention to those tribaliatic miscreants from sourhwaste therefore whenever they get one person that's validate their hatred, they drag all of us into it. Even nzeogwu, who is not even ika and was a proud igbo is not even being spared right now. They are acting like as if an ika denier is a surprise when it's a well known reality they are a divided group (no offense btw). Sunday saying he's not Igbo is the same way okowa said he is and both are from the same area. Just let them be. They've gotten their meals for today. SE biko continue 1 Like |

omonnakoda: If Sunday chose not to be identified with his native language, it's exclusive to him, not an ancient phenomenon. There are families in Abavo that will frown at him for that. I still remember a family member of the then Biafran Chief of Naval staff, Late Admiral Anukwu from Abavo. She once championed the Igbo union where i reside. This is just a personal opinion of Sunday. 3 Likes |

CHM11: Nobody is a minority in his own land! The ikas are a tribe in the matrix of the Igbo nation.. They're not minorities.. just like the enuani or ukwuani or even the aros or ukwas.they're are on the same pedestal, none is higher or lower than the other. Minorities exist outside Igboland which means that every Igbo or Igbolike tribe is no minority 2 Likes |

Well, the real issue is not what Sunday Oliseh calls himself(I think he is in a best position to know who he is ) but what others perceive him to be. I think most non-Ika-speaking people would, on first instinct, call him Igbo. I have always thought He's Igbo but I can now see I was clearly wrong. I guess most Nigerians from the North, on first instinct, would categorize such names as Omatseye, Omatsola, Omawunmi, Omajuwa, Omagbemi, Oritsemeyiwa, Oritsemodupe, Oritsejafor, etc as Yoruba. It's only people from part of the South who understand the nuances that can actually differentiate and thus properly categorize the names as Itsekiri. It's a bit difficult for me to call someone who bears Ogochukwu, something other than Igbo. Based on this stereotype, he would have benefited from being perceived to be Igbo but also suffered from similar perception in some circumstances. That may explain while some, who are not as bold as Sunday oliseh, present different faces to different people. When they thought their perceived Igboness would be helpful, they claimed Igbo. Otherwise, they claimed something different. The real problem lies with people who treat them based on what they perceived them to be without giving them a chance to define themselves. Thus a man could be favored or punished for who he is not. That's the problem of double identity and part of Nigeria's complexities. In this Small-Big intra-linguistic identity schism, the more successful the larger group becomes, the less the likelihood it claims the smaller one but paradoxically, the more the smaller one craves to be identified with the bigger group. The identity crisis is thus, in a way, a product of brand management. Since they can choose to be either A or B, it comes down to just one question: Do I gain or lose more by being seen as A or B? 7 Likes 4 Shares |

cheruv:Judging from the post, an Ika man has denied being called an igbo man so he can't be placed in the igbo nation is his people share his views. Best he will have his own nation called the IKA nation. Just as the Urhobo nation is independent of the Benin nation even though they both share the same ancestral history. Tell an Anambra man that an ika or Ukwani, or even a man from ebonyi is not minority to him. Let's speak the truth here please...the real facts on ground are way deeper than what we can say online....Even among core igbo speaking states, there is discrimination, talk less of an igboid from Delta state. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Can someone listen to Chris Abani's presentation. He said in time past that igbos made their gods, that they would come together in a square and build a god and make sacrifices to it but when the god becomes unruly by demanding human sacrifice then they would destroy the god by destroying the shrine and stop mentioning the name of the god. Figuratively speaking Nigeria seems to be the god igbos came together to build and make sacrifices to which has become unruly and has started to demand human sacrifice and blood. Could it be why igbos have started to stop mentioning the name of Nigeria and are seeking destruction of Nigeria. 5 Likes |

He said he is not Igbo and so what? So what happens if tomorow he says he is Igbo? Does that make him more important? Cursing a group of pple b'cos of a silly statement of one BOY doesnt make SE Igbos trustworthy. Many ika folks are proud of their Igbo heritage, many refuse being called Igbo while others are indifferent or just call themselves Ika. If they were in the same region with SE Igbo, am sure it would have gone a long way in resolving such identity crisis. Ezza pple in Ebonyi is one example of a group with outside Igbo influences like ika but they dont have identity crisis. So long as dsunity in Igboland such as this and the weakening of ethnic groups will result in a more powerful federal govt in Nigeria, we will be seeing things like this. Igbo enemies will even begin to sponsor them. 4 Likes |

Armaggedon: onenaira3:Dee N1 ewela iwe The only way to cure this confusion is to expedite the creation of Anioma state. That way, they'd stand alone and properly ID themselves. Am happy your people have the Anioma umbrella unlike those in Rivers so the only thing is to ensure that SE Igbo see more practical benefits in having Anioma state. I as an ukwangwa love the Anioma.. that's why am going to start a pressure group that'd make Anioma the 6th state 2 Likes |

bayooooooo: Human beings are simply deceptive political animals. Gen. Godwin Alabi Isama was captured by Biafran Forces and was facing execution when he told them he was Igbo from Aboh, in the present Delta state. There and then, he was set free. He later sneeked back to the Nigerian side. Then, one thing led to the other, he was again arrested and thrown into prison by the Nigerian side on charges related to sabotage. The Nigerian army was not convinced he was loyal. This is what happens when people are not true to themselves. I bet you if the current situation surrounding Sunday's job was the one that being a proud Igbo would facilitate, Sunday wouldn't waste any time to embrace his Igbo ancestry. He is just one of the types. 3 Likes |

Afam4eva:People are free to be what they want. If there was no Nigeria there would be no Yoruba, or at best they would be just the OYOs in Benin Republic no one calls them Yoruba, By any measure if there was such a thing as Yoruba then Itshekiri would be but it is their call as it is for Sunday Oliseh The first census that the British did in Lagos identified Ekitis, Ijebus Oyo etc. The Yoruba identity became necessary because of Nigeria . Their kinsmen in Benin are not called so but those alive today are too young to remember. Yoruba really refers to Oyo people and so if an Ijebu man 100 years ago said he was not Yoruba he was right. That does not mean they did not share ancestry culture etc. I suspect it is the same elsewhere but I am no expert 2 Likes |

omonnakoda:I understand your position and as much as you're right about the nomenclature that these groups go by, our classification should be based on what is and not what was. If Sunday Oliseh says he's not Igbo, it should be respected like I've always advocated but what irks me is the lies and half truths that are spewed just to support such positions. No need to tell us that you migrated from Benin or you were colonies by Igbos when the reality makes such assertions sound idiotic. |
