The Senate has finally screened and confirmed the Service Chiefs that were newly appointed by President Muhamamdu Buhari.

The Senate had chosen to screen the security chiefs behind closed doors on Tuesday.

The closed-session which started at about 11:25am lasted for four hours.

Buhari on July 13, announced the appointment of Major General Abayomi Olonishakin, Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice-Marshal Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff; and Air Vice-Marchal Monday Morgan as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Buhari also appointed Retired Major General Babagana Monguno as National Security Adviser.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki congratulated the newly appointed Chiefs adding that the appointment came in due time when insurgency had reached its peak.

“It’s clear that their appointment is based on merit and their presence before us today.
“The appointment as we all see, is coming at a very crucial time with a lot of challenges particularly insurgency in North east and some of the other security issues, for example, the issue of oil theft when they came before us.

“We hope that during the period of time, their performance will take off the responsibility required”, he said.

Saraki also expressed confidence in them to provide a new direction and leadership to the armed forces.

“We are all keen to restore the image and reputation of the armed forces.
“I believe that their confirmation is the beginning of their journey to restore the glory of the Armed Force in our great nation.

He emphasised that the Armed Forces also needed to fine tune the procurement procedures in the Armed Forces and must work hard to root out corruption.

Saraki last Wednesday read Buhari’s letter seeking the confirmation of the upper chamber for the appointment of new Service Chiefs, during plenary.

He had said that the letter to confirm the appointments was in accordance with the provisions of Section18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act, 2004.

Experts disclosed that that ‎the Senate made the screening closed owing to the sensitive security questions that the Service Chiefs would answer that is not meant for public consumption.

Also, the current security challenges in the Northeast and other parts of the country dominated the subject of the screening that was held behind closed doors.
