saxywale: Yes. Ifon was Obatala's first son. He has a compound which his offsprings occupy till today. Ifon left Ife for Ifon in Osun and people from there moved to found another Ifon in Ondo. The Olufon plays a major role in Odun Obatala and also during Ifon festival. Olufon is regarded as Ifon incarnate and the kings of both Ifon towns look to him for whatever borders on Ifon or Obatala. I'll look for the picture of the present Olufon and share. |

9jacrip: Hmmm. But i think mostly they use hot drink. May be hot drink is special to them or something. Hot drink came from foreign land so i wonder what could be why they use it. Why it has special significance. |

9jacrip Always representing positively. I am proud of you bro. Please continue to share your knowledge of Yoruba culture and history. @ All Please learn to ignore those who display the ability of being resistant to knowledge. Especially those who look down on their own culture thinking it is lesser than foreign ones. 14 Likes 2 Shares |

@ 9jacrip, While gins and the likes are used in the protiation of other deities, it is not used in particular when Obatala is concerned, mostly due to the folklore of having created disabled human forms as result of being drunk, is that assertion wrong? Also, I have read some accounts of Obatala changing form to a woman and having a tumultuous sexual union with Aganju to get passage somewhere. The result of that union supposedly led to the birth of Sango and the reason for Sango's powers. Can you relate any actual events to these lores please? Also, can you shed some light on his creative side? I read one book a few years ago where the author insinuated that the neglect of Ogun( the deity of technology as he referred to him) , Esu ( the muse) and Obatala ( the deity of creativity) is the reason why we remain backward? Every insight would be appreciated, thanks. 3 Likes |

@9jacrip any authoritative text on Obatala ? If there is none, I think it is time one is compiled as oral tradition can't keep all the knowledge passed down from generations. This knowledge will eventually be lost if no attempt is made to preserve them. 1 Like 1 Share |

yinkarh187: Then surely christianity isn't a reasonable religion. .. (See below for idols in the religion called christianity) And with islam, well we all know the famous black stone in mecca that all muslims face when praying As to us being the problem - ask urself how exactly is Isese the problem? No african government runs on Isese. .. religious fellows like you are the majority, and here the majority have their way Because of ur likes African culture isn't being sold out like middle eastern or Western culture on which you seem to have wrecked your life buying. The immense hatred you fellows have for African values, and knowledge prevent local production of things that we can benefit from economically You insulted 9jacrip by calling an eediot on the same post u called his(your) ancestors silly and beg not to be insulted hilarious. 7 Likes

naijababe: Sis, just so I won't delay a response to you, I'm going to have to itemize my responses and you'd have to pardon me for it. 1. What Obatala got drunk off of was palm wine which is prohibited. It is one of the strongest don'ts of Obatala follower-ship ethos. One can drink gin and other types of brews but generally, drinking beyond limit is seriously frowned at. Generally, humility and being able to set positive examples for kids is paramount - excess consumption of alcohol in whatever form does not encourage this. 2. Please keep in mind there's a dichotomy between actual historical occurrence and symbolism/spiritualism/myth. There's nothing I can really relate to the occurrence you shared. Maybe that was gotten from an Ifa verse to explain a situation and not to be taken literally? Reason I find it hard to relate is because we know for a fact Oranmiyan was Sango's pops and Oranmiyan was not even in existence when Obatala was around - too far to draw a connection or relate it to an actual event. 3. The author was not far from the truth with what he said. Think about this, why is it that Africa and Africans generally sank to the bottom of everything when we adopted foreign belief systems meanwhile when we believed in our ancestral deities and followed them completely was the period we recorded so many inventions and even civilizations much talked about today? 5 Likes |
