The name of the book is: Central Africa: Adventures and Missionary Labors in Several Countries in the Interior of Africa, from 1849 to 1856, Thomas Jefferson Bowen, Southern Baptist Publication Society, 1857.

The statement (in the book page in photo) is quoted below
The "Eboe nigger," was from a fine open country, above the delta of the Niger, and not from the delta itself, as we have commonly supposed.* At home he was a noble, high-minded and half civilized man, who beautified his fine country with well cultivated farms and shady villages. In America he was trusty, intelligent and industrious, but remarkable for an absolutely indomitable spirit, to which even the master must yield, when the Eboe was aroused, unless he should choose to shoot down the best slave on his plantation. No wonder: for the Eboes in common with the Sudanese, have undergone a strong Caucasian innervation, which is evidenced by the fact that some of them are nearly white.

Well! Well!! Well!!! Can anyone interprete what the bolded portion means: It means even if the Ibo man is angry, he must not be punished for it because he is the best you can get, unless you want to destroy your own house. This is a message for Nigeria

See what they said about the rest of the Niggers

The rest of the "Guinea niggers," brought to our country, were principally the hateful Popoes, the shrewd but thievish Fantees, and others like them."

The fantees (Fanti) are from Ghana, but they have ethnic relationship with one of the major ethnic groups of Nigeria. Which one? The one that starts with Y. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Something on the Yorubas on page 103

Summary: The people (speaking about Yoruba) near the coast are more barbarous than those of the interior

This explains a lot. No wonder in Nigeria, the Igbos are hated and tagged as trouble makers, yet they will not let them go, because they can't live without them.

He actually did have some good words for the Yoruba on page 93/94. But he made some distinction between coastal Yorubas (more barbarous) and the interior ones (less barbarous) on page 103

There is also a full chapter dedicated to Abeokuta, especially on the missionary work they were doing there.

Overall, the writer was a big racist and did not have generally good impression of the black race, despite his picking and choosing whom to praise and whom to denigrate.

When someone has nothing to gain from an issue, he's usually objective about it.to the whites then, all American niggers were slaves..even though they came from somewhere.
The piece was objective in my opinion..and it was stuffs like this that enabled the Europeans to successfully colonize Africa.

the racist's soul is either in heaven or hell. that's by the way. like Jews, there is an account of our slavery, and even in that, our most conspicous traits and attributes are seen and acknowledged.

IGBOS, even in slavery, have an indomitable spirit.

Very inconsequential.

Who thinks about what a simple racist thinks about the black race in general?

Just like a western author called "john lurk" described Africans as," beasts who have no houses, he also referred to them as beasts without heads and has their eyes and mouths in their !breasts",

hmmm, what a fascinating description of Africans by a western racist.

There is no single difference between the two, "john lurk" and d so called author.

The book wrote about almost all the ethnic groups in West Africa, why exactly did the OP decide to pick Ndiigbo out, as a suitable topic for the thread?

I pick out the following though obviously tainted with racism but nevertheless obvious today

Yoruba, Nupe, Hausa = almost fully civilised in towns and kingdoms with authority or governance structure

Eboes = Half civilised villagers. No city just shady villages with no apparent authority.

The writer could have predicted the first coup, the civil war and the massively vanquished half civilised Biafran villagers.

I'm out.

The "half civilized" phrase about the IGBOS meant that unlike the yorubas, Nupes, etc, the Igbo did not have many centralized forms of government. IGBOS were decentralized, often leaning to villages, clans, loose kingdoms or such like.

this remark by the author was chiefly because kingdoms and empires were highly centralized in the western world. although today, it is no more so.

Civilization here meant organized towns. But despite that see how he described Igbos (indomitable) versus Yoruba (barbarous)

Today, Igbos have organized cities but Yorubas still remain barbarous, and their cities are in ruins with rusty roofs

on the contrary sir, the perspective then meant having a centralised form of government. IGBOS had organised settlements like awka (oka), umuleri, aba, onicha, arochukwu, igweocha, etc. in fact , the longest kingdom in Nigeria was the aro confederacy which ended in 1902.

if the author meant your submission, then it means the author too was ignorant and uninformed.
