earthrealm: I’m thinking further than that. Why build with concrete in the first instance. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 9:06pm On Mar 07, 2018 |
twinskenny: Not really. Think outside of the box. What does downstairs wiring have to do with upstairs? I’m not claiming that I have the answer but it’s worth discussing. |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 10:48pm On Mar 07, 2018 |
diordaves: 1) ease of running electricals and plumbing 2) reduces transportation of materials 3) less structural weight = lower cost 4) better intricate designs 5) concrete is not environmentally friendly |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by diordaves(m): 11:26pm On Mar 07, 2018 |
EgunMogaji: 1) ease of running electricals and plumbing: but same with a well planned and executed bricks and mortar. 2) reduces transportation of materials: Not really; about the same with bricks and mortar 3) less structural weight = lower cost: but inferior structural solidity and stability to bricks and mortar 4) better intricate designs: but bricks and mortar not doing too badly in intricate designs 5) concrete is not environmentally friendly: True but only in the short run. I will go for concrete brick and mortar build any day and plan properly. |

spyder880: Where ever in the world where demand for land is high due to large population, the only way to provide decent accommodation is to build upwards. Even in New York, Berlin or Tokyo. I just wish the government will be a little responsible to provide paved streets. Even if with interlocking stones. More importantly to implement the neighborhood water supply system used in American small towns instead of using the antiquated and unworkable central city water works system that is too cumbersome and too large to maintain. Awada needs to have it's own water works system built from contribution from interested buildings and the water works at the edge of the layout will supply every house in the area with water. 1 Like

topsy23: Half conduit involves running conduit pipes in all the walls but not in the ceiling. Full conduit is running conduit pipes in all walls plus ceiling. The difference is pipes in the ceiling. 1 Like |

siralos135: Pros of full conduit 1. Reduces risk of electrically caused fires in the ceiling (sparks are contained within the pipes and do not get exposed to wood in the ceiling) 2. Serviceability is increased (burnt wiring can be replaced without accessing the ceiling) 3. Risk of short circuit at wire crossings is eliminated. Cons of full conduit Basically increased costs due to more pipes and more wires required. Pros of half conduit is opposite of cons of full conduit. That is reduced costs due to less pipes and less wires required Cons of half conduit is also opposite of pros of full conduit. 5 Likes |

I visited this site yesterday. **Can you believe the house didn't have a 'German Floor'? **The deck also didn't have any beams. **All the columns frim ground floor nevrr made it to the upper floor. **Walls are rack due to incorrect setting out from foundation. **The bricklayer suggested and used 6" blocks for ALL upper floor walls including perimeter walls (implications in widow and plumbing), column sizes reduce from 225mm to 150mm etc.. They have ceiling fan hooks in the deck etc..

@EgunMogaji Are you still looking for a roofing guy? I might be able to find the guy who did mine. He was recommended by the first aluminum guys who supplied the roofing sheets. I had great experience with him, he even came back to fix a leak that was detected when the rains came. And yes, he is hands-on. And he did not study computer science by the way. 3 Likes |

KolaShangOne: Just looking at the picture, you just have this hunch a thing or two has not been done properly with the building. The balcony for one, to fix burglary proof needs some changes and improvement. So were you called to improve the structural stability of the building? Why did you visit? |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by KolaShangOne(m): 3:05pm On Mar 08, 2018 |
EgunMogaji: There were only about 2 columns that continued from the ground floor which were reduced to 6" columns from the 9". The rest 3-4 columns started from the deck as an after-thought. Infact, at the corners of the house where you would expect even a blockhead bricklayer to put columns, he put 2 in 4. The parapet is obviously resting on the 6" blockwork. |

diordaves: The Owner just got back and had a hunch something was wrong. His mum and uncle had been helping him manage it. They had no structural drawing for a storey building. So he called me to point out the deficiencies and make recommendations. I mostly don't take jobs that have family persons as Chaperones. This shouldn't be interpreted wrongly though but family members have to have a limit of interference. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 3:46pm On Mar 08, 2018 |
KolaShangOne: My brother, some family members are the worst set of people to deal with, I have many experiences where they will tell me to do this and that, I always tell them NO, and let them ask of money from their relatives whom I am working for. Period. Once I don't have direct contact with the owner of the job, I don't collect such jobs because the outcome is mostly bad and may spoil your NAME |

Don't risk your building with Lagos dredging salty sand use stonedust or Odo Ogun sharp sand. Salty sand affects ur reinforcements in concrete. Tend to weak your structure in a short while. Lagos state Material testing recommends Sonedust or Odo Ogun Sharp sand for concrete works. ...Build right |
