An unmarried man and woman recieved one hundred lashes after being found guilty of adultery in the western province of Ghor, Afghanistan.
The video footage, taken by one of the eyewitnesses of the punishment, shows the woman wrapped in a black burqa and a man obediently sitting in a squatting position, while beign lashed with a leather whip. The whole process is watched by a group of apathetically seated men. The trial took place in Ghor province and was supported by its government.

Commenting on the matter a spokesman for governor Seema Jowenda said: “They had relations a long time ago but were arrested early this month. Their punishment is based on Sharia law and will teach others a lesson.”

Zinā is an Islamic law concerning unlawful sexual relations between Muslims who are not married to one another through a Nikah. It includes extramarital sex and premarital sex, such as adultery, fornication, and homosexuality.

Hundreds of women in Afghan jails are victims of rape or domestic violence. This has been criticized as leading to “hundreds of incidents where a woman subjected to rape, or gang rape, was eventually accused of zinā and incarcerated, which is defended as punishment ordained by Allah.
