March 24, 2014 – Soka Forest, Ibadan Ritualists Den: “Kidnap Victims In Nigeria Are Often Used For Money Ritual” – Police

Nigerian police said they have opened a murder probe after the discovery of rotting bodies and skeletons in an abandoned building in Ibadan, Nigeria’s second largest city.

The Nigerian media have branded the building “House of Horror”.

Oyo state police spokesperson Olabisi Ilobanafor told AFP that a murder investigation has begun, following the arrest of some suspects at the scene. Olabisi said six suspects, including five security guards allegedly armed with guns, bows and arrows, found at the scene, were arrested.

Police also rescued several severely malnourished people founded wandering in the bush and others shackled in leg-chains inside.

“When we got to the abandoned building in the Soka community of Ibadan yesterday (Saturday), we saw decomposed corpses, skeletons and skulls in the building and surrounding bushes,” Olabisi Ilobanafor said.

“Some seven malnourished human beings looking like living skeletons were also rescued in the bushes surrounding the building. One of them died on the spot while we were there,” she said.

“It is not a common occurrence in Ibadan or in the state. The police will investigate this crime in all its ramifications,” she said.

Some victims of kidnapping in Nigeria are often tortured or sacrificed in black magic rituals.

The Ibadan-based Sunday Tribune, Nigeria’s oldest private newspaper, showed gruesome pictures of rotting bodies, human skulls and other body parts littering the scene, as well as ID papers and ATM cards, shoes, bags and clothes.

It also published a photograph of a haggard woman who was allegedly kidnapped in the southern Edo state in 2008 and rescued at what it called the “House of Horror”.

The newspaper said at least one skeletal-looking man was found in the throes of death, groaning in pain as flies hovered around his face.

Media reports said 15 or more people had been found in leg-chains inside the building but police put the figure at seven.

Some mobile phone numbers were also written on the inside wall of the building, the Tribune said in its report headlined “Kidnappers’ den uncovered in Ibadan”.

Some other local newspapers carried similar reports about the discovery.

Ilobanafor said some commercial motorcycle riders had stumbled upon the bodies after complaining to police that some of their members had gone missing in suspicious circumstances.

Yesterday, cutlass wielding youths, in dozens, stormed the building threatening to pull it down, according to Nigerian Tribune.

THE newly created Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Oyo State police command has uncovered a syndicate of suspected ritualists which specialised in swindling unsuspecting members of the public by offering false solutions to health and other problems.
The suspects are Alhaji Akeem Azeez Olayode (37), said to be the leader; the syndicate’s fake herbalist, Ayankunle Ayanlowo (43); the syndicate’s spy, Oriyomi Adebayo (41);  Samsideen Abiola (48), said to be ‘photographer’ who lures rich victims to the syndicate’s trap; and Sherifat Gbadamosi (42), the syndicate’s ‘white witch.’
Discovered were shrines used by the suspects to deceive their victims, located at Oloya community in Asejire, in Isokan Local Government Area of Osun State and Balogun village, via Akufo, in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Musa Katsina, who led officers and men as well as journalists to the shrines, said the activities of the syndicate were uncovered through intelligence.
Katsina said the squad also discovered two poultry farms owned by members of the syndicate, which is suspected to have been established with the proceeds from the crime. Each of the farms is estimated at N50 million.
The commissioner said preliminary investigations by the police showed that the syndicate’s victims included security personnel, contractors, politicians and foreigners.
He disclosed that the estimated cumulative value of money collected from victims and used by the syndicate to establish businesses and acquire properties was more than N800 million.
Katsina said many of the victims had visited the shrines and left with financial bruises.
“They have dispossessed people of various amounts of money, among them an octogenarian from whom the syndicate collected N30 million. Another victim from the United States was also defrauded of N20 million,” the commissioner said.
He stated that the suspects had ma

Akure — FIVE suspected ritualists have been arrested at a shrine where abducted persons are slaughtered and their parts sold to prospective buyers at Ago Oyinbo in Okitipupa area of Ondo State.
Consequently, upon discovery of the kidnappers den, youths in the town stormed the place and demolished it.
Vanguard gathered that the suspects were arrested, following a tip-off by people of the community, who noticed strange movements and stench oozing out of the building.

The human slaughter house and some of the fetish materials therein.
Men of Igbotako Police division reportedly effected the arrest of the suspects.
Before their arrest, the suspects were alleged to have been occupying the building in the last three years.
Sources informed newsmen that the suspected ritualists, after kidnapping their victims, usually take them to the shrine and slaughtered them for ritual purposes.
The said shrine is located in the village which is a few kilometres away from Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode expressway.
Fetish materials such as cow horns, different types of clothes suspected to belong to those abducted, palm fronds, bottles of gin, calabashes, ‘Ghana must go’ bags, among others, were found at the shrine.
The Baale of Ago Oyinbo, Chief Moyebi Okeowo, who spoke to newsmen, said the shrine must have been erected in 2012 when the suspects came to beg for a space in the village to use as location to shoot films.
He said: “I asked somebody to take them to the owner of the land, unknown to him that they wanted to use the village as a kidnappers den.
“When they came to me to beg for a piece of land to shoot their film, I told them I am not the owner of the land and I took them to the brother of the landlord of the land who took them to the wife of the landlord in Akure.
‘I learned they were authorized by the wife of the landlord to use the land and since then, they have been using it.
“When I did not know what they were using the land for, I told their leader to go and report their activities to the police and he later informed me that he had done so.”
Okeowo explained that he was not aware of the activities of the suspects until last Monday when he got information that the suspects were using human beings for sacrifice on the land.
Also, the Principal of Community Grammar School in neighbouring Kajola, in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, Mr Joseph Edosama, said two of the security guards of the school were among the suspects arrested by the police for conspiring with the suspected kidnappers.
Another community leader, who spoke in confidence, explained that it had been long since the suspects started operating in the village.
But the state police spokesman, Wole Ogodo, feigned ignorance of the development in the community, saying the state command had not been briefed by its Divisional police station at Igbotako.

The Ogun State Police Command on Wednesday paraded a 40-year-old man, Emeka Obi, for allegedly abducting 97 year old Iposiola Samaiye.

While parading the suspect, the state Police Commissioner, Valentine Ntomchukwu, said the suspect, alongside his gang, abducted Pa Samaiye from his residence at Ijebu-Esure last Thursday, and later demanded a N20m ransom from the family.

Ntomchukwu noted that police officers trailed the kidnappers to a forest in the state where they held Pa Samaiye captive, adding that his accomplice, identified as Prince, however escaped.

He said: “They held the 97-year-old man inside the bush without food for four days. But our men, through tracking, between 3am and 5am this morning (Tuesday), were able to arrest them and set the old man free.”

The police boss also stated that the victim has been taken to a private hospital in Ijebu-Ode where he is receiving medical attention.

While speaking with journalists at the hospital, son of the victim, Obafemi, disclosed that the abductors demanded a N20 million ransom, which was negotiated downward to 10 million and later N1 million.

He said: “The kidnappers first demanded for N20 million, later it was negotiated to N10 million and later N1 million. But we did not pay any ransom before my father was freed by the police.”

The police boss further warned kidnappers, cultists and other criminal-minded individuals to stay away from the state, adding that failure to heed his warning will result into prosecution when caught.

The Ibadan ritual camp

IBADAN, the Oyo State capital, has of late been in the news for not very good reasons. In what could easily pass as a scene from a horror film, a slave camp was discovered in the heart of the city.
This camp where unspeakable horrors have been committed apparently combined the functions of a shrine with that of a home or a transit camp where captives were randomly raped and offered up for rituals after vital organs have been taken out of their body.
The Ibadan camp of horror brings under one roof the cannibal practice of Clifford Orji and the blood-chilling sacrifices and oath-taking of Okija. Like Orji’s one-man practice, the site was located in a city but like the Okija shrine, the camp was enveloped in a wilderness of sort, not far from a busy expressway in a well populated area.
Which makes it all so unbelievable that such a camp could have been operated even for a day without inhabitants of the area knowing. But then locating their evil camp close to a built-up area could have been a strategy to evade detection. Who would have imagined that some people could have been so brazen as to run a slave camp literally under the nose of other city dwellers?
The culture of impunity that has permeated every aspect of the Nigerian society would remain with us for a long time to come. Politicians and other state officials are merciless in their looting of the treasury. They amass wealth without fear of discovery even as their ostentatious and extravagant lifestyle seems to mock the relevance of the many anti-corruption agencies that populate our country, daring them to discover the source of their stolen wealth if they could.
Armed robbers are no less brazen: they serve their victims advanced notice of their visit and take their time to rob as freely as they could and rape as many as suits their fancy. And the ritual killers? They pick their victims in broad daylight, push them into vehicles and carry them away in the presence of eager onlookers without anyone asking questions.
Since certain categories of Nigerians such as security men are thought to be above the law, they can do as they please in public. They can arrest or shoot other citizens at will. Ritualists disguised as law enforcers have now obviously bought into this trick and now carry people into slavery and keep them for months or years without anyone being wiser. This was how some found themselves at the Ibadan slave camp.
For many years, Ibadan appeared to live up to its reputation and origin as a former war camp. It was volatile and violence-prone. Even as the regional capital of western Nigeria, violence was not far from Ibadan. But it was a relatively peaceful place, a melting pot of various Yoruba groups as well as Nigerians from other parts of the country. When politicians have allowed it, Ibadan has been quiet.
But the sprawling nature of Ibadan with its huge population of uneducated youths made it a favourite recruitment spot for politicians interested in disrupting the peace of the city that combines modernity with unbelievable rusticity in many parts. There is much truth in the claim that politicians have a lot to answer for in the volatility of Ibadan. They align themselves with local chieftains, leaders of the union of road workers, commercial drivers, who turn their supporters into ready armies to prosecute the political battles of rival politicians.
This group of Ibadan people has enjoyed neither the support nor patronage of the present governor, Abiola Ajimobi. At least there is nothing to suggest that. They have been cleared off from their favourite sites and some of their leaders have been fugitives from the law. For this reason Ibadan has been at peace. There haven’t been cases of brutal attacks on rival groups of transport workers and the impunity of touts running motor parks like their personal estate has stopped.
Things are more organized around and inside the parks and traffic flow is relatively freer than in the immediate past. But it does appear that criminals in Ibadan have turned there attention to less obvious activities. Or it is the people that have not been as vigilant as they ought to? The slave camp operators have been running their criminal business for long, it seems.
And but for the inadvertent discovery of their hideout by commercial bike riders out looking for one of their missing members, the people of Ibadan couldn’t have been wiser to the abominable activities going on right under their eyes.
Since the discovery of this camp, there have been more cases of individuals apprehended with human body parts in different parts of Ibadan. Some of these traders in human merchandise go about their business under the pretext of being mentally unbalanced. Which leaves one wondering what people wouldn’t do just to get by.
Our failure to examine certain aspects of our lives has left loopholes for criminals to exploit. But for the culture that allows mental patients to roam around unattended to, some people wouldn’t find it easy to hide under the cover of madness to commit crimes. When citizens fail to be alert to their surroundings they invite unspeakable evil upon themselves.
But it is worse when political leaders, state officials and others with important responsibilities to the community, fail in their duties. They create room for all kinds of criminalities.
Life doesn’t appear to have been cheaper at anytime than now in Nigeria. Everywhere you turn, everyday, human lives are being wasted without consequences.
While the rest of the world have in the last four weeks been wondering what happened to 239 people aboard a missing Malaysian airline, far more Nigerians are killed in just a single day. To live in Nigeria has become a very brutal and nasty experience.
Terrorists widen the latitude of their operations and kill hundreds across different parts of the north-east, they break jails, set their comrades free and launch attacks on military formations even after issuing advance notice of their plan. Fulani herdsmen have been going around, not with their prodding staff and cattle, but AK 47, explosive devices and weapons of mass death, sacking villages, maiming and killing hundreds in their sleep.
Job seekers are crushed to death, government houses and governors’ convoys are not secure- all are open targets.
Now the authorities must quit sitting on their hands and be about their duties. Nobody is safe anymore. This should tell us all we have to be vigilant. As for those who think they are safe because they are in government, the spate of attacks on government houses or places close to them should tell them we are all in the same boat.

Old news. We all know that SW is the natural home of human rituals and ritual-induced human kidnappings. Have you ever wondered what gbomogbomo means? This is something that was rampant in SW even before Igbos started wearing diapers. Before Igbos starting migrating to SW centuries ago, such barbaric acts were not found in Igboland. The early Igbo migrant returnees brought it into Igboland. Thank God it has gone back to it's owners: SW.

The prevalence of these vices in the SW is appealing to say the least.
I posted a story, with another moniker, about this devilish act involving a kidnapped lady earmarked for rituals in Ijebu-Ode sometime ago. Her escape from the den is nothing but a miracle. Days later, following her escape, dead bodies started appearing in the streets of Ijebu-Ode.
The Yorubas and ritualistic killings really need urgent attention from the FG as it seems the various state govts are not heeding the call from the populace to put a stop to it.
