There were already Yorubas in the war even before the thrust towards Lagos.
Yorubas were already involved in some of the ministries that were undermining the Biafean efforts even before the war.

The thing is that Yorubas always try to justify their efforts in betraying their neighbours.
They even justified their actions of 28th march 2015, by deplouing their media arm in labelling GEJ as clueless and an dumbo. It's all about GIVING A DOG A BAD NAME BEFORE HANGING IT

So you mean GEJ was/is not clueless?

Element of surprise, kwa?? shocked shocked And how long does such an element of surprise, last? A few minutes, hours or a few days?? Kindly let us know! cheesy

What happens next after the element of surprise wears off? How many battles have been won based on element of surprise? Do you even know how many battalions and garrisons were in Lagos and the South-West? And their military strength? Any offensive won by using an element of surprise does not last long, if your opponent is better armed and better fortified with men, materials, resources, strategy and decisiveness.

Stop believing all the propaganda you have been fed. Ojukwu had more than one opportunity to enter into negotiations that would have prevented or averted the war. He did not. angry

Your belief that the Lagos authorities fled in panic is also highly unfounded. If they fled in panic, how come they were able to deploy two battalions to deal with Banjo's advancing soldiers, and also push them all the way back? So your guesses are totally inaccurate.

That claim of 'going to Lagos and seizing the serpent's head' was part of the propaganda touted by Ojukwu. It was a poor strategy that had no basis in reality, and should never have been embarked upon.

I read through many comments on here,I’d say I’m ashamed and discouraged at the lots of you all.
Firstly I saw one comment on the proposals from aburi convention of 67,which the writer falsely lied, about. First after the immigration of Biafran a from the north down south,Ojukwu asked for salaries to be paid to those refugees who have filled up the south. What did the perm sec,of the federation do?? If you know your history you’d know prior to all this,Gowon was just a puppet. The perm sec was the one in control and being from the middle belt,it was a power struggle between the north and the middle belt,of which the middle belt had more infantry men at the army than all other tribes.
Secondly they never needed 4 high ranked officers to form the supreme military council, the only reason they needed four high ranked officer was for Gowon to be able to declare a state of emergency,in the south. blockading the south, get your facts right.
Thirdly, after the the Kano riot of 53,a council was formed by Aguiyi-Ironsi,to probe the agitators of the said massacre, what did Gowon do?? In his word why keep a council open when the representative can’t sit.
Now on the issue of Ojukwu being a coward, this that,he’s the only Nigerian hero, born of thus motherland whom we can call a man. Your Awolowo betrayed his west, your sarduana enslaved you. Get it right,he was a man born of wealth, schooling in the uk,he was driving a rolls Royce’s,while your so called heroes are stealing public funds to achieve such feat,Ojukwu didn’t need no government money,as a young graduate he has always shied from his fathers name, making his own man.
Ojukwu wasn’t the one who called for the emancipation of Biafran,no it’s not left for one man,the Biafran did,the farmers, teachers, kingmakers, tomatoes seller did, that Biafran where every man air his or her mind. This same man you called a coward, did what the brits couldn’t. Brought different ethnic groups under one name, and it worked. This man commandeer a war,the federal army in it nights said would take 3days to quell. A selfless man,who fought for the woes of his people, not for his own gains. If he had fought for his interest,do you think he won’t hold a major office in Nigeria till date?? Would he lose all his fathers property in Lagos and so on?? That a man of the people a selfless man.
That same man you called a coward, told Awolowo as soon as he secedes Biafra Awolowo should do same for the Midwest. What did the great Awolowo do?? He was awarded minister of finance with the belief after war Gowon would hand over power, now tell me who the coward would be.
Now pertaining the war,yes the federal troops had more fire powers, had a total of 85000 infantry men,but lacked engineer, lacked good doctors, artillary men, whom mostly are Biafran who had either been killed or in the Biafran camp. A small tiny republic with just one B-29 fighter jet could hold a federal power as big as the Nigerian,British, and Russian government at bay. To you,you feel Biafra never successful seceded because of the federal army? You lie. It’s cause the west feared such a small colony, developing at a rate it did,we built bombs, built armored cars, rocket, refined our crude. What do you think would happen given this colony the opportunity to emancipate Ask yourself.

True! sad Am still at a loss as to how they thought that expedition to Lagos, would have given them an edge in the war. The Biafran soldiers would have been wiped out in a matter of hours, once they landed in Lagos! How much ammunition did Banjo have in his kitty en route Lagos, anyway? Did they think the federal forces would have keep quiet in shock, on sighting the Biafran soldiers in their territory? shocked shocked

Ojukwu just wanted to use them as cannon fodder to buy more time for himself in the South-East. That's all! undecided

Your post make sense, die! cheesy Even their entry into the old Midwest region was also flawed. The Biafran troops entered Benin and declared the place a "Republic," claiming they had come to liberate the inhabitants. Who told them the people of the old Midwest were in bondage? shocked And this was after Ojukwu had agreed with Ejoor, that 'the Midwest would remain neutral, o!!' shocked shocked

Next, the soldiers went on a looting spree and committed different atrocities against the local populace, which led to those ones fighting back using underground methods. undecided There were reports of Biafran soldiers killing unarmed non-Igbo civilians in Abudu, and other parts of the region. Eventually, the federal forces arrived and put paid to the whole thing. Sadly, the Asaba massacre occurred.

Some folks say, if Biafrans had not occupied the old Midwest, the federal forces would not have entered that region to dislodge them, and the massacre may never have taken place. May God continue to grant the departed souls, eternal rest. sad

Lagos would actually have gone down,if not for the betray of ifejuana,Alale,Agbam, and the humble victor banjo. The Biafran forces has already captured,Abuchi, igueben,Benin,as stronghold, advancing down ore,now if you don’t understand your history.
The federal army, was actually made of more middle belt infantry men, with the north and east holding on to high ranked position. Especially the east, who where the best experienced then. The yorubas actually had little to no army power. At ore, prior to that point in time, the northern shoulder had already been sent north, and western shoulders in the north down south.
It’s in every humans nature to gamble, and everyone has a choice banjo, ifejuana made theirs out of their gamble, return back to Enugu, kill Ojukwu, declare a cease fire, and win the respect of the head of state and your own people, who chastise you(banjo). He’ll be made governor of the west, ifejuana to the east,of which they’ll run a coup ousting Gowon to make Awolowo the prime minster. Unluckily the American attaché to Nigeria who was at Umuahia got a transcript of banjo conversation with Awolowo via the British high commission. Banjo withdrew his troops back down to Enugu without firing one shot in the Midwest, not one. Those men where not saving no millions of people,it was all personal interest and vandettas. And posterity did judge them, even the great Awolowo said it in his bio, that he regretted never seceding the mid west.
Most of you look at the war and think it’s ojukwu’s war no it’s wasnt,it’s a people’s war,the Biafran knew their fate was sealed, but would take no more of the redundant stsytem that doesn’t work. So instead of you to insult, rather salute a man who fought for not just the biafrans but for Africa, cause it died in Biafra.

It is pure conjecture on your part, that Lagos would have fallen. shocked The Federal Govt had a superior army, adequate ammunition including fighter jets, and well-trained soldiers, in Lagos. sad

Even if Banjo had kept to the plan, he and his entire team would have been decimated within an hour of getting to Lagos.

Check transcripts of American Embassy dispatches during that period, as well as records of scholars who researched the war. Banjo would not have stood a chance. Ojukwu was banking on the element of surprise, but the battalion he deployed for the job, was grossly ill-equipped for that assignment. undecided

You failed to also State that during that nepotic period,

1) None of the High ranking Igbo Political or military officers were killed or are igbo immuned to nepotism?

2) The beneficiary of the Coup was an igbo man.

3) The Igbo Head of State, Gen Ironsi did NOT tried and punish those who carried out the coup.

# In a very nepotic setting, it will be be very hard for non-igbos ( if you put yourself in their shoes and view the matter from their lenses) to believe that the Jan 15,1966 coup was NOT an Igbo coup.

Duru1:

I am not surprise form the above post. The coup was never Igbo thing but Nigerian army’s stuff coincidentally led by officers from Igbo extraction. Those who partook in the coup were soldiers who knew the level of rot such nepotistic tendencies will impact on Nigeria army. However, few miscreants in Nigeria turned it into Igbo thing.

1) Biafran rag tag Army will march from Ore at 3am to Lagos unhindered and the FG will just surrender to Biafran forces by 6am.

I have read and re-read a lot of books on events from the first coup to the civil war. Truth be told, whatever situation Nigeria is today is as a result of the events of those periods. Infighting, lack of trust, nepotism etc grew so much within those periods.

Reading accounts from different sources has given me a broad view of these events. If you read widely, one would understand why each party in the war did what they did whether right or wrong. As for me, I have learnt not to blame anyone for their roles in the war. That's why it is called WAR.

I have spoken with elderly ones on both sides of the war. It is not a thing to pray for at all. If there will be a clamor for Biafra, the best way is by nonviolence. It may tarry but it is achieve able.

I have also read a.lot of memoirs regarding the war. I note that there's a dearth of books from the Northern combatants in the events leading to and during the war itself. Have you observed this?

The coup failed but Ifeajuna escaped to safety in Ghana, dressed as a woman and was driven to freedom by a famous poet. Twenty months later, he was back, fighting for the persecuted Igbo people of eastern Nigeria in a brutal civil war that broke out as a consequence of the coup.

Ifeajuna and three fellow officers were accused by their own leader, General Emeka Ojukwu, of plotting against him and the breakaway Republic of Biafra. They denied charges of treason: they were trying to save lives and their country, they said, by negotiating an early ceasefire with the federal government and reuniting Nigeria. They failed, they died and, in the next two and a half years, so did more than a million Igbo

Njoku and Efiong were technically Ojukwu's seniors in the military, but they deferred to Ojukwu, as the head of state and commander in chief of Biafran forces. Efiong only had to defer to Ojukwu, while Njoku had to defer to both Ojukwu and Efiong, in spite of the fact that he was their senior.

Ifeajuna and Banjo were given a direct order of what to do with Biafran forces under their control, and funded with Biafran state resources. Yet they went off on a tangent, deliberately not carrying out the order, and forming their own opinions and grandiose designs that were not cleared or authorised by the BIafran hierarchy. And to make matters worse, lightening speed was required of them, in the orders that they were given, and they went dilly-dallying and giving the Nigerian forces all the time they needed to mount counter attacks. So even if they had better plans, they ought to have used the right channels while still sticking with the orders they have been given.

There wouldn't have been anything lost if they were carrying out the direct order that was handed down to them, while also bringing their new diplomatic plans to the attention of the BIafran hierarchy, who would have been happy to add their plan to what is already happening.

So I still insist that they got what they deserved, as their actions totally crippled Biafra's only chance of getting a negotiated settlement that would have been more advantageous to BIafrans
