Addis Ababa Beats Lagos To Light Rail As Construction Delays Mount by SB2020: 9:25pm On Sep 23, 2015
Interesting facts about Addis Ababa and Lagos light rail projects.

Addis Ababa / Lagos
Cost == $475Million / $1.2Billion
Length == 34km / 27km
Time to Complete == 4years / 7years (projected)
Year Awarded == 2011 / 2008 (Construction began 2010)
Contractor == China Railway Eng. Corp (CREC) /Chinese Civil Eng. Constr. Coy (CCECC)
Population == 5Million / 20Million
GDP == $50Billion (Ethiopia) / $100Billion (Est.) (Nigeria - $535B)

Ethiopia has managed to deliver Sub-Saharan Africa’s first modern light rail project which opened in the capital Addis Ababa on Sunday, and in the process, beat Lagos whose own rail project remains four years behind schedule.

Ethiopia’s rail project was delivered on time, despite its being longer than the Lagos – Badagry rail line currently under construction.

Addis Ababa’s two line 34-kilometre system was built by the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) and cost $475m, 85 percent of which has been covered by China’s Exim bank. The Lagos Light Rail Project or Blue on Badagry Expressway, was to have 13 stations from Okokomaiko to Marina via Iddo for a total of 27 kilometres.

The contract was awarded to the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) at the cost of $1.2 billion in 2008, and was to be delivered in 2011. Survey work took one year between August 2009 and August 2010 while construction began July 2010.

The work is being implemented using the public and private partnership (PPP) model, whereby the state builds the infrastructure and the private sector provides the rolling stock and management. However, the project has not worked out according to the plan.
The 2011 deadline was missed, even though the State government got a loan to fund the project.

I argued this fact severally to blind supporters of the APC but no one would listen. I can only live consoling myself that at least APC is embarking on such a project even when it's being used to siphone public fund. The alternative which is the PDP will not even bother embarking on such and would rather loot their lives to stupor.

This says a lot about what we are talking about here. when Nigeria is finally laid to rest because of greedy citizens, we will all gather to give it a disappointing burial to crown it all.

Just like the billions expended on power and still worse.
Nigeria is a like a country where politicians excavate increasingly expanding money sinkholes '. The Lagos train cabs are also about 20 years old yet manages to cost more than another with shorter distance and brand new trains.

1999 - 2015, despite monumental funds we have just meagre basic amenities yet some are here willing to fight tooth and nail for those who sit on their future.

As to the cost, it is somewhat puzzling, but i suspect the variance could be coming from the fact that much of lagos light rail will run overhead, but i could be wrong if addisababa lightrail too is overhead.

Ethiopia is the fastest growing economy in africa right now and also attracting the most FDIs.
Something that would never have happened under jonathan.
I think ethiopia currently has africa's most intelligent leaders.

Please where is Lagos?

So we truly expected jaga jaga Nigeria to beat Ethiopia in infrastructure delivery?

Abeg, also add Amaechi Mono rail to compete with Ethiopia's.

Our oga in Aso Rock would have been shouting "Kworruption" now if fashola and Amaechi that squandered state funds pretending to be building monorail had been PDP men.

Get your facts right, COWARD, the funding was partly PDP, as they were the central government at the time . The FG contributed about 50%. And also, if you must know, there is a light rail also being developed in ABUJA. This was done by the PDP. What about RIVERS, before that dog called Amaechi joined the APC, he was already developing a monorail.
By the way quit the sympathetic, fake neutral man approach. You are APC all the way. Or is it that you can't shake off your father's cowardly genes in you. Be a MAN for once in your life, COWARD.

You are right, though the cost will always be inflated as per the 'sad norm' with previous administrations (these are some of the things we expect the new admin to reduce), but we can argue 'compensations' too and 'yada yada yada' . . .

However, the sad part in my opinion is, the time frame!
Why does everything have to cost more, and take longer to deliver in Nigeria?!

Well, it could also take more time to build those overheads, and i recalled the FG in early 2014 refused to assent to the state getting a tranche of the loan, these could also be argued for the delay. There would be no excuse if at the end of this current administration in 2019, the project is not delivered.

Of what use is arguing bogus lies. If FG/PDP contributed 50% where is the project now ? Do both APC/PDP not get to share the failure of the uncompleted rail which was started before that of Ethiopia at nearly 10 times the cost yet Ethiopia as completed theirs while yours is still in limbo. What century will the Abuja light rail be completed ? Kudos to Rivers. Amechi jumping the ship only buttress my claim as far as I am concerned. I will take the APC over the PDP in my constituency any time any day though they are under performing. Like I said

Ajumobi over Akala will always be a YES
Amosun over Daniel is a YES too
Fayemi over Fayose resounding YES
Aregbe over Omisore YES

When PDP is ready is ready to offer the SW an Akpabi or a Chime then and only then would you understand not everyone supporting APC is as gullible as you wailers. The closest they ever came was Agbaje n he had to rig his way to secure the ticket that is how bad the PDP is Nearly offering a disaster like Obanikoro it's ticket. Like I argued with wailers like you cowardice is not a crime under the constitution of Nigeria. When the push comes to shove we all know those that flee to Côte d’Ivoire. Quit the sorrow you plung your soul into daily over party politics n live a more fruitful purposeful life. It is well with you.

1. There's nothing to compare regarding Lagos Metro Rail and the ones in other countries.

2. The requirements and specifications are not the same.

3. Lagos states Metro Rail is part of a 10 lane freeway with BRT access

4. Lagos constructed a Metro Bridge over the Lagos Lagoon into the Marina which takes time and comes with extra cost, Ethiopia did not build any bridge over any lagoon.

5. Lagos state built Real Metro stations and overhead bridges which takes time and comes with extra cost, Ethiopia built sheds.

6. Lagos is a state withing Nigeria, not a country like Ethiopia, Lagos is doing what many sovereign nations can not do or even afford to do.

Your comparisons are off base, illogical and grossly unintelligent, no offense, just being factual.

It costs more to build because Lagos is a Waterlogged Marsh Area , Addis Ababa ba is not

There are many bridges that need to be built in addition to filling the waterlogged areas with Water Resistant Rocks and Concrete that will form a Solid foundation and cost more than the laying of the Train Tracks itself

Look at this Railway Bridge along the line on the Lagoon for example,
it is expensive to build
