This reminds me of my final year at the university. A lot of my colleagues, especially the female ones, where blabbing about how they were going to go for their masters immediately they finished youth service. At that point, I felt I would be behind them cos they had parents who could afford to spend on their masters degree. Few year after, I've come to realise that having a masters degree without work experience is like calling yourself a Master in roadside mechanic job without going through apprenticeship. Such a person must be a genius to be able to repair car engines.

I believe majority of my colleagues will later realise how much of a waste of time it is going for masters without job experience. Most companies are concerned about your work experience more than your certification. They use your work experience to determine what you can do for them. It shows you've been tested before and so can be trusted.

Pls, don't be like my friends who thought tendering a CV with Bsc and Msc automatically gives them an edge over other applicants in a recruitment exercise. Without work experience, the CV will just seem like a decoration. These days, people remove Msc from their CV just to get a job. Even if you are going to be considered for a job as an Msc holder with no experience, it will still be an entry level job with little salary.

Nice one.
Except you are very lucky, most coys want cheap labour these days,if you have a BSC with work experience you stand a better chance getting 3 out of 10 job u appled for while a Masters holder with no experience stand a chance of 1 in 10.
Sometimes ppl with masters hold it back when applying for some jobs just to get out of unemployment.except ofcos ur ppl are well connected and there is already a post you are eyeing which require you getting the masters 1st

Durchess, I know 35K is not much, and as you are doing it for the experience, it sounds like a good idea. Especially if the experience will help you in future job opportunities. I agree, a couple of computer programming classes (I'm a software developer myself) or so, can open the door to better opportunities.

To the OP, 60k is not bad. But if a Masters degree will open up a lot more opportunities, then go for it.
Durchess:
Came here 2 read comments. Am actually working wit a pay of 35k jz cos of ds experience thin. I intend 2 quit d job by dec and improve my computer skill , do a professional course nd probably learn a craft. Wat do u guys fink

I think you should take ur age into consideration

If u r still below 23 years old , then i tink u shuld go for ur masters

I don see myself employing a 29 years old with masters buh no experience

I keep on saying it that Bsc is now equivalent to WASSCE in Nigeria! who told you you won't get a better job with your second degree? Pls go for your masters now when you are still young, have enough time for yourself and have a sponsor(rare opportunity). Going for your PhD when u start working is not a sin!

I'm touched by this topic because its a dilenma that faces many Nigerians seeking for a bright prospect in future. I totally agree with the face that experience could trump a degeree but may I ask...we young Nigerians honestly believe that an Msc. Is not a gateway to better career prospects? Unless you're an enterprising person because not everyone will own a business, some have to work for people. That's the honest truth. Nigerian degrees today aren't appreciated in the labour market unless you come out with a 1st class then you are an exception. Even those with 2:1 should go take a look at updated CV writing, some employers will insist you state your CPGA.

Considering the rate of inflation, stack economic realities, utility bills, transport, feeding, personal expenses, rent (datz it you living alone), 60,000 is better than 18000 but you'll just be living paycheck to paycheck. There are over 180 million people in this country. You won't discourage a young man from seeking an Msc because you know "people" who did masters and are earning 40k. Nigerians and their negativity. WASH!!!That's someone who played away in his masters and didn't make a good grade or didn't do his masters in a reputable insititution.

Not everyone will be as enterprising as Tony Elumelu, Dangte, Mark Zuckerberg (who himself needed guidance from econmists, lawyers, venture capitalists, hedge fund managers and investors to be where he is) Sim Shagaya of Konga but a bit of dedication and being passion driven to earn a living, get a masters degree and better your life, nothing worng in my book. *and I'm done with my epistle*

Gentleman, hi. This is my take on your situation. You're probably fresh out of NYSC, ok. My issue isnt just work experience or Masters for higher pay and all that. The main issue is: WITHOUT WORK EXPERIENCE AFTER B.Sc, HOW ARE U SURE U REALLY "KNOW" PRACTICALLY what u wanna do u for your Masters?? Thats something most people don't consider. Just cus u studied accounting or law doesn't mean u are gonna like it in practice! Bad or not enough orientation is something lacking in our system. After few months practicing, some decide this is not what they wanna do their whole lives! Hence the switch to other disciplines which bettr suites their personality after working for a while. But u can only know when u practice: work experience, even if for 6 months! Which is what NYSC is partially about. Give some free service so u have an idea what working life is all about. Only in this case, its real life working experience. So, do the job and get your hands dirty and see how it goes. Never mind about the pay, doesn't matter for now. You will be surprised how radically different a job on paper is from the real practice.

Be very practical, MSc is a beautiful degree. Did mine in UK and I had the best of time, I learnt so much, tutored by experts in my field but sadly the reality is there are no jobs and to be honest Experience trumps MSc. My advice is take the job for now and start concrete plans on your MSc but make sure u do that MSc even if ur pay magically doubles don't discard the MSc plan. Saw Hell looking for a job even with d UK MSc degree. And u said the job is actually in your career path, Sweet.

Simple, practical n truthful

Do u have dreams? Do u have ambitions?? Where do u see ur self in d next ten years?? If u have d opportunity(if u hav willing sponsors) of doing a masters, please go for it... d fact a masters holder is earning 30k per month is not enough reason not to go for masters.. If masters will lead u to ur dreams then chase .. just as I have seen successful pple without a masters,i have also met people who regretted not doing their masters early(or not doing it at all),cos a time will come when studying will become difficult due to age issues..don't let 60k distract u...

Hmmm! No be small matter o. I am currently running my masters and I am about to start my second semester. My husband stays in another state and I am due to give birth in about 6 weeks.

My major concern is how to cope with the challenges of school and motherhood. I am worried , should I defer or leave the programme?

Salaries are not directly related to your qualification but to the job position. A masters holder employed as a gateman in a bank will always earn lesser than a HND holder employed as a teller. Do the Job and go for your masters later. Masters doesnt guarantee a high paying job eventually.

Rumpelstiltskin:
Is it a job that will provide opportunity for advancement? Do you have a passion for the job you're being offered? If you eventually get admitted, can you 'conveniently' finance your Master programme?

The decision is up to you to make. Just remember that the master degree programme will always be open to you but the job may not, considering the current situation of the country. A bird at hand is worth fifty in the bush.
Wish you the best in your endeavours!
God bless You

People who talk like this, I can guess, are Ajebos, whose needs are all met and they have connection in high places, 60k is not much but with the present reality (for an everyday Nigerian o), it's a very good place to start, then you walk your way up, if possible do your masters while at it --> there are no guarantees anywhere, some Msc degree holders are seeking 50k job. Those who get smaller jobs have bigger chance to get a higher paying ones than those who've not gotten any at all.
