5. Bike sharing(Netherlands, London).

Will this work?

Imagine having thousands of bikes littering about a hundred bike stations across Lagos or VI. Instead of adding your car to the traffic, you can just stroll to the nearest bike station to your house, pick a bike, cycle to work and drop it off at the nearest bike station to your office. Like that again when you're going home undecided

This is cool.... but Nigerians go steal am go their village dey form levels.... lolz

Haven't lived in England for some years and travelled around Europe. There are a lot of transport systems that can remove traffic congestion in Lagos but will they invest in it? I doubt it. Lemme mention a few to add to the OP's own. Cable Car system, Tram system, Ferry with the ones the OP mentioned Overground and Underground train even though it will take so long and massive investment in building underground tunnels and stations. The power sector is still bad so alot of these projects is not sustainable. The bottomline is that these idiots in govt have to stop stealing money and invest in massive infrastructure and planning. Try checking out transport for London( tfl.gov.uk) and see how a good city transport system is planned.
The return on investment on this infrastructures are enormous considering the mass movement that occurs within lagos. To an average politician 8years is what is always on their mind.
Transportation is a good revenue if lagos government can empty its pocket for it. Fashola did what he culd.

Tax car owners and introduce better BRTs. There shud be ferry service from oworo to the island also. To reduce 3rd mainland traffic. Bt trust our leader. None of thier business

Their used to be ferry service from Mile 2 to Marina way back when the original & only ACTION governor of Lagos state, Alhaji Lateef Jakande was in charge. In fact one of the ferries was called Baba Kekere.
The same way Jakande started metro rail before Buhari CANCELLED it at a great cost to the state out of ethnic bigotry jealousy.
That metro rail is what Tinubu/Fashola/Ambode have struggled to revive for over 16 years without success.

Splashme:
The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.

Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.

The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.

Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”

The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.

Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.

He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

* Four years ago, with plenty fanfare, our former gomina (governor) waka go Toronto for inspect and buy aloku scrap metal trains =>

AUGUST 10, 2011

The Lagos deal would be the first of its kind for the TTC. Decommissioned cars are usually sold for scrap metal and can fetch up to $1,500 dollar each. While Ross declined to discuss specific figures, he says the sticker price for Lagos is "significantly more" than scrap prices, putting the potential profits to the TTC in the millions of dollars. shocked

It is not unusual for technology from western nations to end up in poorer countries. Marketplaces in Africa and Asia are flooded with North American clothes, computers, and even cars, but the purchase of larger technology like trains is rarer.

The cars will have to be significantly refurbished to fit existing infrastructure in Lagos, and some Nigerian media reports have lamented that the government appears to have settled on "tokundo," or used, trains instead of brand new vehicles.

Although half the cars are more than 30 years old, Ross is adamant they are perfectly safe and are only being decommissioned for capacity reasons. But he also admitted the TTC is not required to make sure the cars meet any safety standards before selling them.

"Once sold, it's up to the new operator to ensure they are in good working order," he said. "They do need to be maintained much more frequently than the new trains, simply because of their age. At some point they will run out their useful life."

Murtaza Haider, director of the Institute of Housing and Mobility at Ryerson University, said the age of the cars is definitely a cause for concern.

"We should be ensuring that there is some service life left in these vehicles and we're not going to be playing havoc with the lives of those who would ride these vehicles," Haider said. "There's metal fatigue, and that metal fatigue could result in dangerous conditions. I would be paying a close watch on this for the next ten years to see how many accidents do happen in Lagos."

* In January 2013, i.e. some two years after the Toronto visit, our "excellent" former governor said the trains will be ready by June, i.e. five months after the unsolicited statement, based on his inspection & assessment of work done so far at the time =>

Lagos light rail’ll be ready in June – Fashola
JANUARY 9, 2013

The Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Tuesday said the first phase of the state Blue Light Rail project would be completed by June this year(2013).

He expressed confidence that Lagosians would start enjoying the services of the lrail project immediately.

The first phase would run from Marina and terminated at Okokomaiko area in Ojo Local Government.

Fashola spoke during an inspection of ongoing projects in the state which took him and his cabinet members to Orile-Iganmu, Alimosho and Ejigbo areas among others to assess the level of works being done by contractors.

The governor, who inaugurated the trackwork of the blue light rail at Alaba Suru, Coker-Agunda Local Council Development Area, said the level of work on the road and those of the National Theatre and Alaba-Mile 2 rail stations, would ensure early completion

He said, “In order to finish the project, the contractor did not go on vacation during the festive period. This will ensure that the project is delivered on time for the use of Lagosians.

* Last year, our fine-boy-no-pimples former Misita Gomina confessed he had already spent a whopping sum of N160 billion on the light rail that was supposed to be in use since June 2013. Depending on the exchange rate he used that could be $1 billion to $1.2 billion spent shocked

How We Spent N160bn World Bank Loan on Light Rail Project

.
.
.
.
He, therefore, explained that the state government already “has in place, strategies to repay the loan. The federal government was in the know of the state’s decision to take the bond and it approved it.”

He added that the truth “is that what they do not also say is that no state in Nigeria can borrow money outside, from any multilateral agencies without the approval of the federal government.

“What they did not say is that they approved it. No state can raise money by bond the way we have done without the federal government’s approval. Both SEC and NSE are all federal regulatory agencies through which we must pass. If they said okay, it means there must be something good about the debt.

Until Lagos start seeing transportation as the major earner in the state they will continue to waste time and resources doing irrelevant things.Transportation as presented here can be financed by private sector and government only do the planning and regulation.Common is not common in Nigeria.

I feel like crying for my country. Imagine having something like this move cars from Lagos waters down to River Niger in Onitsha during Christmas time, so much pressure will be taken off our . Our leaders will see all these yet pretend they don't know and keep steaing us blind. The ones that pretend to care will start such project and turn it to cash cows for their pockets. See rail projects abandoned in so many states.

The truth of the matter is that the present transport model of many small buses is not sustainable.

Bigger buses with designated stops will reduce lagos traffic by a great deal. The routes need to be planned with designated bus times etc

The problem is that if the bigger busses are introduced. What happens to the Danfo drivers who will loose their jobs?

Here everybody wants to own a car. If you don't have a car in Nigeria, you neva arrive

Until the government impose heavy and sophisticated tax on car owners, they would never understand the level of hazard associated with private cars.

Have a entered a bus here?
Do you know how uncomfortable it is? Not to talk of the drivers stopping every second to pick passengers.

You can't blame a car owner at all. Our transport system is terrible.
Before they start to impose such tax they should fix the transport system.

If the head is rotten, there's really not much the body can do. Have you ever seen a body walking without a head? The buck has to stop somewhere. A team fails, the manager gets the sack. Not the entire team. A government is seen not to be performing, the president, prime minister or whatever nomenclature they go by is voted out. The military is losing a war,the general or generals are fired and replaced. Not the entire army. It's the nature of things. Someone must take the lead. That is not to say we don't have a stake in our own development.

It will take a lot of orientation and rebranding to appropriate these fantastic ideas.

We are talking about a Lagos where people see commercial bus drivers and commuters as POOR people.

How about the train? The average Nigerian feels trains are meant for people who cannot afford AC fitted buses or private cars. GEJ tried to rebrand this aspect (at least we saw celebrities on train) but he was booted out of office in the name of corruption.

Fantastic ideas @OP but do not expect 'these' in this generation. Let's pray we don't raise more TINUBUs & SARAKIs.
