Being number one comes not only with benefits but also with a lot of responsibilities. Being at the top, one need to do his or her best to maintain such position, in order not to fall or crash from the top disgracefully...same pressure being the first brings to the bearer, is also the same pressure most first sons and daughters usually face from family members. They always expect them to lead by example and also to carry their family name and image with pride. Any slacking on his or her part, their parents or family are quick to scold them or put them in check. Especially when it comes to the issue of getting married first before others in the family. Especially when it concerns the first daughter in an Ibo family. Such daughters (the Adas) usually face a lot of pressure to settle down first, and also live a responsible life for her younger sisters to emulate. Most times, parents don't like nor want their younger daughter to get married before the first daughter. Its usually seen as an abnormal thing or an abomination. Most times, the first daughter is usually rushed or pressurized to get married before her younger sisters, in order not to bring shame upon the family or be a laughing stock in the community for being single and still in her parents' house when her younger sisters are married and with their husband. Being afraid of such stigma and the pressure from family members have made not a few ladies to get married quickly to men they didn't love or wanted. Making some to later cheat on their husband or get stuck in a loveless marriage. But why put pressure on ladies, just to please the society...why? A friend of mine is presently going through a similar experience. Her younger sister is really pressurizing her to get married before her fiance comes to see the family. She says it wont be nice and proper for her to get married before her elder sister. And this friend of mine is confused and helpless cos of the pressure. Her boyfriend is still in school (final year), and not yet ready for marriage due to obvious reasons. Thought civilization has made many not to indulge in such practice anymore...
