500samuel:
2^2x=8x
expand 2^2x will be 4x(square)
4x(square) =8x
divide both side by 4x
4x(square)/4x=8x/4x
x=2
Wrong!
Re: Solve This Problem & Be Hired as Consultant by Nobody: 4:28pm On Oct 09, 2015
Adehorze:
2^2x=8x
Taking log of both sides,
Log2^2x=Log8x
2xLog2=Log8+Logx
2xLog2=Log2^3+Logx
2xLog2=3Log2+Logx
2xLog2-3Log2=Logx
(2x-3)Log2=Logx
Equating d log of both sides,
>>
(2x-3)2=x
4x-6 =x
4x-x=6
3x=6
Dividing both sides by 3
3x/3=6/3
x=2
Very close but ur finishing [4rm where u quoted (2x-3)2=x] is not in conformity with mathematical laws.

I guess u meant to ask "what family does Ethene belongs to?" If that's what u meant to ask, Ethene belongs to the family of Alkenes.

he asked for general name of ethene. its acetylene.

2^2x= 8x 2x*2x=4x 4x=8x divide both side by 4x 4x/4x=8x/4x 1 2x replace x with 2x in the left hand equation 2^2(2x) 2^4x bring down 4x 2*1/4x cross multiply 2*4x= 8x • • • 8x=8x. Rate me . Thanks.

The bolded is wrong. Consequently anything that comes after is wrong.

I wonder when acetylene became the general name for ethene? Acetylene is an old name for ethyne(not even ethene). Like I said if by general name u mean family name then it is 'Alkene'; so u see! Don't be too quick to arrogantly correct what u don't know.

2^2x=8 2^2x=2x2x2 2^2x=2^3 when u cancel both 2 in the bracket, you have: 2x=3 divide both sides by 2 2x/2=3/2 x=3/2
it's wrong bro. where did u drop the x?

my bad,.....ethylene(general or common name) is ethene(IUPAC) and ethyne(IUPAC) is acetylene(general or common name).
Besides, there was no arrogance in my earlier post.

There is also a big difference between family name or homologous series and general or common name.

Just got the answer
2^2x=8x
2^2(x)=8x
4^x=8x........eqn(1)
2^2x=8x
2^2x=(2^3)x
Divide both sides by 2^3
x=2^(2x-3)........eqn(2)
Substitute 2^2(2x-3) for x in eqn(1)
4^(2^(2x-3))=8(2^(2x-3))
16^(2x-3)=2^3(2^(2x-3))
2^4(2x-3)=2^3(2^(2x-3))
2^4(2x-3)=2^3(2^2x)/2^3
2^4(2x-3)=2^2x
Equate the powers of 2 on both sides
4(2x-3)=2x
8x-12=2x
-12=2x-8x
-12=-6x
x=2

Here is your solution in writing, it makes these errors more obvious:
1. Making x a solution of itself in x=2^(2x-3)
2. Opening an outer bracket before the inner bracket to get 16^(2x-3)

I agree with AK461, it's trial and error
Or if you can do the wahala, equate each side to 0 and solve simultaneously.

I hope I'm right.

I love Maths; I'm glad I stumbled on this thread. cool

Hmmm.... I'm impressed cool. You guys demonstrated quite a number of mathematical skills. But I'm afraid, you aren't getting it right cry. And of course you can easily guess the answer wink. Let it be known that you can't use an analytical approach to accurately solve such exponential equation embarassed. Rather, you make use of the graphical approach smiley.
The question is this; how do you use the graphical approach?
step 1: Draw the graph of y = 2^(2x)
step 2: Draw the graph of y = 8x
The x-coordinate of the point of intersection of the two graphs will give you the solution to the exponential equation. In this case, you will obtain x = 2.
Hasta luego cheesy

Neyozak, where's my offer letter? grin

Yes, the answer is 2. But show example or I don't believe you.

2raised to power 2x = 8x

Simplifying
2x2 + 8x = 0

Reorder the terms:
8x + 2x2 = 0

Solving
8x + 2x2 = 0

Solving for variable 'x'.

Factor out the Greatest Common Factor (GCF), '2x'.
2x(4 + x) = 0

Ignore the factor 2.
Subproblem 1
Set the factor 'x' equal to zero and attempt to solve:

Simplifying
x = 0

Solving
x = 0

Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

Simplifying
x = 0
Subproblem 2
Set the factor '(4 + x)' equal to zero and attempt to solve:

Simplifying
4 + x = 0

Solving
4 + x = 0

Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

Add '-4' to each side of the equation.
4 + -4 + x = 0 + -4

Combine like terms: 4 + -4 = 0
0 + x = 0 + -4
x = 0 + -4

Combine like terms: 0 + -4 = -4
x = -4

Simplifying
x = -4
Solution
x = {0, -4}

Thank You
