Herdsmen on an Enugu expressway
RESIDENTS of Enugu have raised the alarm over the
activities of Fulani herdsmen in the state.
Some of the residents, who spoke with Southern
City News in Enugu, expressed concern at the
manner in which the herdsmen moved their cattle
along major streets in the city, particularly
residential areas.
It was gathered that herds of cattle had on several
occasions obstructed traffic within the city.
Reacting to the development in a chat with our
correspondent, Mr. Sunday Emeh, a shopkeeper in
Ogui Road, said cattle should not be allowed in
major streets and residential areas.
“This is totally wrong, cattle should not be allowed
on streets and residential areas. This ugly
development is an inconvenience for people.
“The animals are too destructive because on some
occasions, the cattle damage goods and property
on their way and you can’t hold the herdsmen
accountable because they don’t even speak English,
not to talk of Igbo.
“I don’t know where these herds come from but I
am surprised that they are allowed to come into
streets and major roads,” Emeh said.
Another resident, Nnamdi Igwe, in the New Layout
area of Enugu metropolis, said the activities of the
herdsmen constituted a threat to lives and property
in the state.
Igwe noted that there were instances where
herdsmen attacked and even killed innocent people
in parts of the state.
Voicing his concerns over the activities of the
herdsmen in a chat with Southern City News, Igwe
said, “These herdsmen are known to be very
volatile; they are even armed with dangerous
weapons.
“On several occasions, especially in the rural
communities, there have been reports that
herdsmen attacked people. They have been
involved in armed robbery. They even rape women.
“People have even lost their lives in encounters
with herdsmen. Now, they are coming into major
streets in the urban areas and nothing is being done
about it, even when it is apparent that their
activities constitute a security threat.”
Also speaking on the matter, another resident,
Uchenna Amanze, urged the state government and
the security agencies to urgently address the
development.
Amanze wondered why the herdsmen would take
their cattle into the streets and residential areas,
saying, “There is no grass in the streets and roads,
so what are these herds doing there? The
authorities should take immediate steps to address
this matter before it gets out of hand.”
It will be recalled that in 2014, the immediate past
Enugu State House of Assembly attempted to
regulate the activities of herdsmen in the state. The
House held public hearings on a bill entitled ‘A law
to make provisions for the control of nomadic cattle
rearing in Enugu State and other matters related
thereto’.
The bill, which was not passed into law, sought to
make herdsmen who take their cattle to
unauthorised areas guilty of a criminal offence,
even as it (bill) also made provisions for the
establishment of grazing reserves for cattle rearers
in all the 17 local government areas of the state.

l still cannot fathom how these herdsmen reason. Why many state governments turn blind eye to this menace still baffles me. On a business note, their presence proves that one can successfully operate a dairy farm in the South East applying the zero grazing option whereby the cows are fed in their stalls cutting off the drudgery of roaming around with them. They would produce more milk as one can get nothing less than 25litres of fresh milk daily from a good breed under best practices. 1 Like |

Is the increase in the proliferation of herdsmen related to our often bandied agricultural policy gains or a consequence boko haram's activities up north with the consequence of the herdsmen being internally displaced? Can anyone say? |

The State Government has Power to build Branches and establish Husbandries for Animal Industries in his state. Let all State Governors build Branches around the Fulani Herdsmen in their States, buy them and their wares and employ them with other management staff to run them. |

Is there any developed country where you find chicken talk less of a cow roaming round streets. This country is backward in so many ways......serious countries no longer practice nomadic cattle rearing, encouraging them is like encouraging farmers to keep using hoe and cutlasses and not to think to use mechanised system of farming. Truck this herdmens nonsense is getting out of control. They should be checked |

The east and probably the South-south should come together and create a unified strategy for dealing with this fulani menance. This is unacceptable. |

Obynobyl: You don't say!!!! And here was I believing that such abominations ( after persistent propaganda from certain quarters), is only peculiar to the south west, simply because they are too timid to confront their "slave masters". 1 Like |

A unified SE/SS approach would be the best bet for curbing this menance. We already have a SE/SS governors forum, this fulani stuff is what should be paramount now. |
