To be realistic, long distance relationships aren’t easy at all. We shouldn’t sugar-coat it, because for most people that have been there, they’d attest that long distance relationships are very challenging and tough! Does this mean they are totally not workable? No – long distance doesn’t have to ruin your relationship either. With the right commitment and communication, it can actually be more stable than geographically close relationships.

That said there are definitely ways to make them more manageable, and enjoyable.

Stay In Contact

Since you won’t be seeing each other in person, it’s important to establish and maintain an emotional connection as often as you can through keeping in touch. Try to update your partner on your life’s activity and how it’s going. However mundane some of the things may seem; talk it up by texting, phone calls, video calls and others. The truth is, every couple have different communication needs. Although it is unwise to be overly “clingy” and possessive. You two don’t really have to communicate 12 hours a day to keep the relationship going as you may get tired of loving, or just get bored and exhaust yourselves with the relationship.

Set Goals

You both need to be open and clear about your goals and expectations in life and for the relationship. Don’t be afraid to ask questions like

“What do we want to achieve at the end of the day?”

“How long are we going to be apart?”

“What about the future?” because if one of you is hoping to eventually live in the same place and get married, while the other is looking for a fun escape during business travel, things aren’t going to work out in the end.

The truth is, no couple can be in a long distance relationship till the end – eventually you both need to settle down, so that even if you are not living in the same space and the same time zone, both of you are still working together in the same direction towards a future that includes one another.

State The Rules

This is not to say that the other party is not matured, but stating the ‘rules of engagement’ is very important in a relationship. You both need to be clear with what you expect of with each other during this long distance relationship. You don’t want a situation whereby your significant other thinks or assumes he is opened to have friends with benefits since you aren’t around, or go on dates with another person.
