Mindfulness:I've enumerated a number, amongst which are wiring - probably leading to a competitive disadvantage - and choice, Mindfulness:All told, I couldn't say for sure, but as I've posted, I believe difference in wiring and women' choices play the largest part in this seeming "under-representation". Mindfulness: In other - more life science - areas, women have made great strides (as noted they are starting to dominate in terms of numbers in the UK). Why are the nurturing factors that they overcome here not likewise overcome in TEM? With all the initiatives, positive discrimination, campaigns and specially formulated policies, women have still not made much progress. Read the OP. Check out Sweden, where concerted efforts to get women into STEM have been made. Any vestigial cultural hindrances or cultural effects are minimal. The difference between the sexes is apparent even before socialisation and is evident in babies as young as 4 months. It is what it is. TV 1 Like |

coogar: I think Nature might have something to do with it. Naturally most men are not very patient and meticulous so reading huge text bores them. Even young boys suffer from Attention deficit and short attention span than girls. Those kind of people would have problem finishing a huge textbook While when it comes to things more cavalier, cracking equations. Use an equation to resolve a giant problem. Thats sounds like the type of things men would want to get involved I wonder how those Medical students read all those huge anatomy textbooks. I would fall asleep. Actually when in secondary school. the smartest people all wanted to do Engineering and we probably saw Medicine as a thing for the boring people who are not too sharp to grasp concepts easily |

Mindfulness:You are great at querying - it would be good to hear you present a case with backup for your views. After all, you are not merely fact-finding are you ? For one, see ramdeuter' earlier post detailing difference between 2004 and 2014. Secondly, I've detailed how women now make up 60% of medical school intake in the UK. Thirdly, it's well known women are enrolling in university in greater numbers than men - still the TEM representation is proving a difficult nut to crack. Even with positive policies and positive discrimination in favour of women. If you have anything persuasive, please share. TV |

raumdeuter: grey matter vs white matter. women are better with languages, men are better with math! nothing can change that - female rights just put untold pressure on women for no reason. by the time most of them graduate, majority have abandoned what they studied in school & are choosing courses that are mentally-tasking.
i don't think i hated any subject as much as biology. that crap is too voluminous. i had to be begged to read it for my SSCE.
now....you are talking! the use of logic to solve problems has always been my forte.
na cramming now..... that's why most of them don't have a functional social life. they just read & read. the university passes through them, they never get the chance to pass through the uni. |

The interesting thing about this particular topic is that this is one of the areas that the equalist ideology will hit a clear and insurmountable wall. Nature will always trump ideology; all the touchy-feely motivations that drive current day agitations, such as the cry for more women in STEM fields, will have to give way to natural facts. RIP to ill-formed theories like 'gender is a social construct' and 'we are all the same'. We ain't! |

How can one say Medicine and Surgery is for dull people just because he wants to win an argument? Out of 100head boys and girls, about 85 would aspire to study either LAW or MBBS. An Engineering student doesn't need to score up to Nursing cutoff mark to get admitted which is beneath Pharmacy and Dentistry toppled by Medicine and Surgery. There are countless stories of undergraduates that ran away from Medical school because they couldn't cope and are currently doing Engineering courses. I'll easily solve mathematics questions without opening my book, infact I perform better in Chemistry and Physics. A1 is rare in Biology compared to Mathematics. Medical students write 4 M.B Exams, if one fail any courses, they'd be removed from Medical school. Do you have any idea how many muscles are in the body nd their origin, insertions, blood and nerve supply, functions. Do you know a Medical student must know all of histology, neuroscience, neuroanatomy, embryology, anatomy-muscles,viscera, physiology - deals with functions, a bit of pharmacology, biochemistry. All this are done under few months before writing their 1st mb exams, then pathology-deals wit pathways of diseases, pharmacology deals with all drugs and their history, minor surgery in year 4 alone, paediatrics nd obsterics & gynaecology in year 5, surgery and community service in year6. All of this is done in medical school. If one is good at Maths and Physics you will do well at engineering bt being good at biology nd chemistry does not guarantee you will make it in medical school. 6 Likes 4 Shares |

TV01: I have no case to present to you. I am still a learner regarding the subject of this discussion. I liked your essay so I read it carefully and by doing so some questions popped up, which I am asking you to answer. I hope, you don't mind. Ok. Clarified. Thank you. When you refer to medical schools, do you also have nurses in mind? |
