Living in Hausaland in the 50's. Sugarcane was
popular street food.
I remember when a car driven by a non muslim hit an hausa elder who was eating sugar cane and caused him minor injuries. At the alkali court they gave the driver some sugarcane to eat and tell the court his experience. When he said it was sweet judgment followed:
A man eating such a sweet thing should not be blamed for not seeing an oncoming car. He was jailed for 'shakera bieru' or 5 years. It was fun then in el rufai s Kaduna.
