I write with respect the issue trending on Facebook and UNN groups and pages about forceful imposition of laptops on all first year students by University of Nigeria Nsukka.

The school mandated the incoming first year to pay for "laptop fees" so that they will be issued "UNN-compliant laptops"; and to worsen the issue they made it a prerequisite for clearance. The issue is causing a lot of tension among the new and old students of UNN. This is not unconnected to the fact that UNN is subjecting its new intake to hard life; in this already-hard Nigeria of today.

Here is what we are talking about:

UNN acceptance fee = 25,000

UNN School fees for first years = 60,000 and above (depending on d faculty)

UNNACCOMODATION= 10,000 (BOYS) 11,000 (GIRLS)

UNN laptop fees = 70,000

Total: 165,000 / 166,000

Then we start talking of miscellaneous expenses like feeding and text books etc.

The is major issue here is the laptop fees- There are lots of questions to be asked here:

1. Some have laptops already. So they should have two laptops because they got admission in unn?

2. Yes, nobody can downplay the importance of laptop, but then, if unn wants the students to have laptops, I think every Nigerian student knows where to get it in the market. Some might go for a laptop of 30k, some may get fairly used ones, some may take their parents own, some may borrow from friends, 45k even can get a nice laptop for a students...so if laptop must be used in UNN, is there anything wrong in students getting it themselves Why the imposition of 70k for a laptop in the Nigeria of today??

I enjoin the federal government to please stop UNN from this white elephant project and prevent untold hardship in Nigerians.

Here are some screenshots from facebook:

This a good development... but the payment of the laptop should be spread through the four years duration of the programme one was admitted to

For God's sake everybody knows the way and when to get a laptop if the need arises. Why imposed it on all.

To worsen matters is our youth and her leaders. Before you know what goes, the student's union will be 'rewarded' for their loyalty to the mgt on this move.

Because of the Treasury Single Account, they are now looking for another avenue to continue their looting.
That VC should go and enjoy the money given to him by Abia govt when they took him upstairs before announcing the result.
ICPC should go after this man

They should know that most parents who have their children in that school are still earning the meager N18,000 minimum wage.
