Three illegal varsities shut in Anambra

By Okey Maduforo, Correspondent, Awka

Determined to stamp out quackery in Nigeria's education system, three illegal universities have been closed down in Anambra State by National Universities Commission (NUC).

http://odili.net/news/source/2009/may/22/701.html

Consequently, over 2,000 students of the three fake institutions have been advised to go home and seat for the fresh admission examination through Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB).

When a team of the NUC conducted reporters round the affected institutions, it was discovered that Atlantic International University, which was claimed to have been affiliated with a university based in United States of America has over 600 students offering degree programmes in all academic courses.

Also Royal School of Academy, Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area, which had about 700 students, was also closed down because it had no accreditation by the universities commission.

Best Choice University, Okija, that had more than 1,000 students, was also shut and the NUC stated that it had no affiliation with Ebonyi State University as was claimed by the authorities of the institution.

Already, one Mr. Paul Nwagbasi, who is alleged to be the proprietor of the institution and five other staff of the school were arrested in Abuja and are currently facing charges of obtaining money under false pretences from unsuspecting members of the public at the Onitsha Magistrate Court.

Speaking with reporters after addressing the students of the school that cut the picture of a primary school and shanties, the chairman of committee on the closure of illegal university, Prof Michael Madukwe said: "The institution is closed down in any name or form in Nigeria. Any of such campuses in this country is closed down and we are begging parents that have students in these schools to withdraw their children.

"We have asked the students to withdraw. They should go home and stop allowing themselves to be deceived by these fraudsters.

"We are working with the State Security Service (SSS) and the police and we have asked the students to make a formal report so that we can know the number of the affected students, find a means of making the proprietors or the authorities to refund them their money. The matter is already in court and the proprietor, registrar and four other staff of the institutions are facing charges at the Magistrate Court, Onitsha."

Madukwue, however, announced that about seven more universities would be approved to take off in no distance time, adding that they are at the last lap of the exercise.

Also, Director of Education in the Anambra State Ministry of Education reiterated the state government's position on illegal institutions operating in Anambra State.

"The state government under Mr. Peter Obi is aggressively against the operation of illegal private institutions in the state. Ever since we got information against it, we have been waging serious war against it. We have been on air, spoken to the police and SSS. Even the lawmakers representing those areas have been told to ensure that this is allowed. When we noticed that some of them were operating in our schools, we moved in to stop them from making use of our public schools and all our principals were warned not to accommodate them."

Some of the students who spoke with reporters alleged that they pay between N84,000 to N120,000 per session, lamenting that the NUC should find a way of reabsorbing them into the approved universities for them to continue their studies.

how on earth were they able to have their names included in Jamb brochures for potential students to have them as a choice. should retarded NUC be ashamed that they dont coordinate with Jamb to effectively advice jamb on what schools should exist and schools shouldnt.  and they think they have done a good job by closing them down.

and hwats all this affiliate this, affiliate that? dem don turn establishing of university to franchise again. i think say na only fast food joint and the likes dey go the franchise route.

i think the NUC and JAMB should ask themselves questions. my first post on this thread asked some of them. i really do not think the students need to be integrated into approve universities though. worse they should get is refunds and something extra for compensation

Well they knew the school was not accredited yet they entered. There is university craze in the east and it makes it more difficult to get admitted into your course of choice everyday. That's why these kids are running from pillar to post. I always advise them to go up north, it's easier to get admitted there.
Re: Three Illegal Varsities Shut In Anambra by mustafar1: 9:47pm On May 22, 2009

Re: Three Illegal Varsities Shut In Anambra by AloyEmeka9: 9:49pm On May 22, 2009
What tribal lens?. These kids were not duped for sure because they knew the school was not accredited unless the school was accredited before they got admission. How is that tribal lens?

Ask that Iyana Ipaja oracle reject over there.
Everything has to be Yoruba and Igbo
Is it news to have non accredited schools
The USA has plenty
Re: Three Illegal Varsities Shut In Anambra by AloyEmeka9: 9:55pm On May 22, 2009
That is the problem. Is it possible to list an unaccredited school in the jamb brochure?. If it's possible and such information was not given to the students, then they have a case. Nigeria is a lawless country.

How are you so sure the schools were owned by igbos?. Is Pat Utomi not the proprietor of Lagos business school?. Is a Yoruba man not a share holder[with 3 white men] in metallurgical training institute onitsha?. How myopic.

Exactly
If JAMB listed the schools on their list and people applied to them and got in even with the horrendous names
The students ought to be reassigned to other schools
It's not their fault
The Director of JAMB and his top officers ought to be questioned.

the students cant be reassigned to other schools because the school are not controlled by jamb. how is the school they are reassigned to determined even if they can reassign them. this is between the NUC(who is currently playing hero) and JAMB. they messed up and they intend to use the schools and their officials as scapecows.
