I was opportuned to go with some foreign expatriates to inspect an oil pipeline being built to move crude oil from Umutu to Okpai in Ukwani – Ndokwa West – Ndokwa East LGAs of Delta State. As we stopped along the Ogume road to assess the level of work done, a Delta Line bus staggered and swerved over a myriad of potholes and screeched to a halt beside our pickup. The Driver disembarked and walked around the weather beaten Toyota Hiace bus to check his overloaded tires. My expatriate friend curiously asked the Driver why he didn’t fix the bus before loading setting out from his park. Some passengers laughed at his question. I can never forget the driver’s response. He said… “Oga, I nor be the government o. Na government bus, make you ask government…” He got back into the bus, started it and drove on.

Truly, it wasn’t the driver’s fault that the bus was in that condition. Despite of being blessed with abundant crude oil deposit, the area is also yoked with the worst roads in Nigeria. Kwale, despite of being host to about five oil companies is no different from a village. Residents say they only have power supply for a few hours once in a month. At night, about seven gas flaring stations that dot the town would turn the whole sky red. Curiously, the people do not complain, protest, or demonstrate to make their discomfort known to the relevant authorities. They just go on with their daily lives as if 1 % power supply, gas flaring and bad roads are their normal ways of life.

During the former administration of Goodluck Jonathan, the Opposition APC regularly organized rallies and protest marches across the country for one phone reason (Bring Back Our Girls) or the other. When the price of Petrol was reduced, instead of jubilating, Nigerians abused the government. The rail sector was revived with diesel powered trains running around again after decades of inactivity. Instead of encouraging the government, Nigerians said the locomotives are outdated… the fare is too high… and so on…

Now that the APC is in power and there is fuel scarcity, nobody is protesting. The trains that used to run before no longer run again. I do see the trains hauling several containers at Ikeja Along in Lagos a few months back but one of the trending news right now is that of containers calling off articulated trucks. Nobody has done anything about the worrisome trend so far. There are reports of soldiers being killed in their hundreds by Boko Haram… instead of condemning the terrorists; Nigerians say their soldiers deserve to be killed because they harass hapless civilians. If policemen are brutally shot dead by bank robbers, Nigerians would condemn the police for not doing anything to foil the robbery, but most of them changed their facebook profile pictures to support France... you’ll wonder why they didn’t criticize the French police/military for failing to prevent the terror attack like they often criticize their police/soldiers…!!..

Nigerians are very weird people. A Biafran activitist, Nnamdi Kanu who hasn’t killed anybody is being detained by the government illegally despite of several court orders to release him. Rather than join their compatriots from the eastern region of the country to protest and press for his release, the people of in the western and northern region want the military to shoot un-armed protesters. My expatriate friend wondered why some governors would call a meeting to deliberate on the Biafran protests but they have never called a meeting on Boko Haram or to address the current fuel scarcity. He said he won’t be surprised if a Nigerian top politician orders his police escort to shoot at passersby and some people die as a result, nobody will protest ,the politician will serve out his tenure and still get re-elected again…!!..

He joked that if you want Nigerians to laugh, smile and praise you, surest way to go about it is to make them suffer and inflict every imaginable discomfort you can think of on them. However, if you want Nigerians to abuse, you, ridicule you, call you stupid and other local slangs like “maga”… try being kind to them, help or support them… all you’ll get in return is just insults…!!.. I couldn’t help, but agree with him…

Lol... What about Foreign lovers who were scammed by their Nigerian partners?

They work hard to earn money to make their "Love" as comfortable as possible...

At the end of the day... after eating belleful, the Nigerian lover would run away ... some will even boldly tell their foreign partner that they've been scammed...

We don't only scam foreigners... we also scam our fellow citizens ...

abi what is the difference between a dubious phone vendor who stuffed a high end phone with fufu and sold it to an unsuspecting buyer and a political party that heaven on earth during elections, but after tasting power, plunged the country into economic mess?

The funny thing is that instead of condemning the scammer; Nigerians will parise him for being "smart" ... while serially blamming and rebuking the scammed for being "stoopid"...

What an irony ... undecided
