Zaria emirate turbans southerner as ruler From Senator Iroegbu in Abuja, 06.06.2009 Sunday, June 7, 2009 In what looked like a departure from the past and an indication of a gradual but steady inter-ethnic integration in Nigeria, a Southern male Chief Michael Odiahi Abulu, has been coronated as a traditional ruler in the northern part of Nigeria. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/jun/7/211.html The ancient city of Zaria, Kaduna State was agog with celebration when family members, friends and the emirate of Zaria converged to witness the turbaning ceremony of Abulu as the Onojia of Esan 1, Zaria. Abulu is born to the family of late Mr. and Mrs. Abulu Akhetua in the early ‘40s at Umenlen Ugbegun, Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State. He attended several schools before joining the Nigerian Army in 1968, where he studied various special courses on investigation and anti-fraud. He finally retired in 1991 with service medals. Chief Abulu has served his people in various states and towns of this country with the Esan Progressive Union (EPU) before settling in Zaria. Abulu is a practicing Catholic and an evangeliser with the Pope John Paul II School of evangelisation Catholic Diocese of Zaria. He is married to Mrs Abulu with six boys and one girl. The appointment of Abulu is with the approval of the Zauzzau (Zaria) Emirate Council and the consent of his Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr) Shehu Idris the Emir of Zaria although the turbaning was performed by the Iyan Zauzzau and district head Sabon Gari, Zaria; Alhaji Bashari Aminu (OON). In his acceptance speech, Abulu, which comprises five local government area occupied by the Esan people in Edo state said that his leadership is not to make development contributions without taking into cognizance the area's (Zaria Emirate Council) code of conducts. “This development will provide the necessary link between the Zauzau and Esan people and government through the district heads office and mobilise them towards self help projects. |

Come on guys. This is not any indication of any inter-tribal anything. This is just like having a Sarkin Hausawa of Lagos or an Eze Ndigbo of Lagos. The guy is ruling over his kind, the Esan people, in that location. How about turbaning a Southerner as Emir of Zaria? Now that would be something! |

AjanleKoko:yes it would be something - something stupid. Why would a traditional ruler be a foreigner to the tribe he rules. what would be your next request, that the oba of lagos comes from ghana? The move is significant in that it recognizes the esan people and gives them a voice in the traditional government. |

The ancient city of Zaria, Kaduna State was agog with celebration when family members, friends and the emirate of Zaria converged to witness the turbaning ceremony of Abulu as the Onojia of Esan 1, Zaria. Ah ah. What is new here? Nothing. He is just the king of Esan people in Zaria. Come on guys. [b]This is not any indication of any inter-tribal anything. Thank you jare, on the highlighted. |

what would be your next request, that the oba of lagos comes from ghana? There will be a time in Africa when there will be a lot of gray areas in tribes and bloodlines. There will be too many eminent citizens with questionable ancestry vying for that post and people then will be more liberal and wouldn't mind the tribe or nationality of who rules them. This may happen in the next 50 years. |

some times, am amused with the kind of response on this forum to some fairy tales. the title is just a chieftancy title and do not connote any traditional influence. he cant decide for any esan man in zaira. even some pple living in US are talking as if they are here wit us in kaduna state. mind u, no southern zaria can become kaduna governor. the zaria pple will rather die. the poster should wake up from his long sleep or slumber |
