Oil pollution gradually wiping out Ijaw nation – Stakeholders

MDG oil spill in Niger deltaThe people of Ijaw have again cried out over the effect of environmental degradation due to gas exploitation in their domain.

They say the zone is being gradually wiped off and that federal and states governments of affected areas must act fast in finding a lasting solution to the menace.

This is contained in a communique issued at the end of a two-day stakeholders’ workshop in Warri, Delta State.

Delegates from 78 Ijaw clans across the zone met under the aegis of Ijaw National Congress, INC.

According to them, “The environment remains the most valuable physical resource for development and survival of the Ijaw nation.

“Summit resolved that urgent steps be taken to implement the UNEP report on Ogoni and clean up other degraded communities.”

The summit insisted that Ijaw communities bearing the resources of the nation should control same and pay taxes to the government at the centre.

INC said, “Violence or restiveness is a new phenomenon foisted on the Ijaw by circumstances of oppression and frustration including militarization of Ijaw territory.”

Ijaw communities where oil & gas activities are carried out should chase oil workers away from their dpmain if federal government refuse to take necessary action against the oil companies causing the environmental pollution,,,,,,,,
how can their resources be exploited & the revenue from it shared among the 36 state but they are meant to bear the comsequences of the negative impact of exploration.
infact,it will not be well with the north tht contribute notn but reap from where they did not sow

Some very big idiot Ijaw guy was arguing for the legalization of illegal refineries. He put so many words together in that silly Nigerian sense kind of way that almost made sense.
The question is why Nigerians think God made laws for mankind and separate ones from Nigerians. You cannot pollute your environment for short term monetary gains and not pay the price. It is your children and grandchildren that will. It is cancers, stunted growth, destroyed fishing ponds et.c
She'll has divested from the stupidity business of the Niger Delta, Jonathan and his clique have stolen their own it is now for people to use their brains and take good decisions. All the make shift refineries should be destroyed. All communities engaging in tapping into pipelines should be punished. The FG should deliberately develop new businies.lines for people in the oil producing communities as a matter of urgency. Agro-allied business lines, marine transport, marine security et.c

Very myopic statement from an ostrich who prefers to bury its head in the sand than come up and face reality.

Admittedly, while the oil companies have caused spillages and pollution, however, more recently a newer phenomenon has emerged where the Niger Deltans themselves are increasingly responsible: a) militants frequently blow up the pipelines causing massive destructive pollution, b) local businessmen sponsor such damage in order to secure repair contract for the pipelines and/or clean up of the pollution, c) common criminals also puncture the pipelines in order to steal the products for mushrooming numbers of illegal refineries d) monies from the 13% derivation released by FG through the relevant ministry or bodies towards development and clean up of the area are often stolen/diverted by Niger Deltan politicians and officials at the expense of their own ppl.

In short, majority of the problems are largely now more self inflicted than otherwise - some ppl just prefer to twist the facts for their negative propaganda.

@Op,the topic should have been 'Greed and Corruption is killing Ijaw communities'.
It still amazes me that it was an Ijaw president who ruled Nigeria for 6 years that never took this environmental issue seriously. He was derisively named Fortuna to in a corrupt oil deal and for years,he failed to approve a single clean up exercise and sat on the Ogoni Clean up request but spent all his might and influence to illegally transfer Rivers State oil wells in Soku to his state Bayelsa. Even with the billions of To polo and A sari, none of them made a single investment in sustainable development and remediation of their environment. Most of these Ijaw leaders are cursed.
