Nzeogwu coup is one major reason why I fear that my country might never attain her potential greatness. A coup planned and lead by a sincere revolitionary man but all his people could see was the tribal advantage presented by the adventure. The singular mistake made by Kaduna Nzeogwu was listening to Ojukwu and shed his plan of attacking Aguiyi Ironsi led Lagos. Had he attacked Lagos and fail or killed.... today Northern soldiers wouldnt have seen the coup as a tribal cleansing.

Orkar wasn't Igbo. Orkar was from Benue state. As for Nzeogwu, he might have been Igbo by ethnicity, but he was born and raised in the north, Kaduna precisely. I think his actions were guided by an honest sense of patriotism in executing that coup. He was buried with full military honours in Kaduna after the civil war.
no wonder he has an uncanny resemblance to that nigga omenka. omenka is from benue too. but back to nzeogwu - he sounds like a principled man but his actions do not match his speech. he is a closet tribalist. he failed to kill any ndigbo leaders who happen to conveniently be out of town when he was killing the leaders from other regions. truth be told, he is just another tribalist. wink

He didn't have the interest of Nigerians at heart. He was only trying to depose the oligarchy then and install his own, which he failed in.

The problem with political losers is that they tend to request for the support of the people when they are embarking on their selfish interests. The moment they achieve it, they never remember them again I just pity for the silly people who allow themselves to be used and dumped by these class war participants.

The biafrans took the bate placed by Nzeogwu and his own Oligarchy build up which led them to losing 3million innocent souls in a senseless war that could have been avoided. The Ojukwu they died because of abandoned the project and still later came back to contest for the Nigerian Presidency. That shows you that these guys don't give a damn about the people

If Ifeajuna had not leaked the info to Zik, Nnamdi Azikiwe would have been killed alongside Tafawa Belewa, etc and the northerners wouldn't have seen it as a tribal coup with eastern agenda.

brother, read history well, the major factor that caused the war was when thousands of people were killed in the north for reasons they don't know anything about, they didn't demand for their own country until they felt they were unsafe in the old one.

picture this, someone, a military officer, from kogi whose name is bayo, kills a prince whose names is abu, now this led to a mass roit which was deliberately left unchecked where thousands of people who don't even know bayo gets killed with impunity, just because their name doesn't sound like abu.

they go home and demand they want to be on their own, that's the simplest cause of the war.

even murtala demanded that the north secede, if not for gowon who told him to calm down, after the first wave of killings, ojukwu called for the takeover of power by the most senior officer, I think his name was bamidele, the guy refused, another senior offcer from the west couldn't control soldiers from the north beneath him, who took orders from a captain of northern origin.

the next most senior was a naval guy from the west too, but murtala and co insisted that they must have the power otherwise they would secede, eventually the two most senior officers from the west relinquished their power and gowon became president , ojukwu however refused to recognise his power, plus as military governor of the east, his people, smarting from the brutal and senseless killings insisted that they wanted their own country.

God bless good and sincere historians like you. We all are still witnesses to northern people killing sprey and madness at any slightest national disagreement.

Northerners used to kill only Igbos some decades ago during any slight national disagreement and the rest of Nigerians rejoiced and instead blamed Igbos for not staying in their land.

Nature in its own way of rewarding us...pushed northerners to form the dreaded Boko Haram militants now killing their own brothers and sisters and no longer Igbos alone.

If Nigerians trace their history well...we have a lot to learn if we must stay as one country; we must stop the marginalization of Igbos and even find a way to jointly help an Igbo person to become Nigeria's president.

Maybe nature and the blood of the innocent Igbos wasted since 1966 for no justifiable reason is part of the reason Nigeria has remained a mediocre as a nation after over 50yrs of independence.

I know many people won't agree nor understand, but to every physical action on earth, there's a spiritual undertone.

Boko Haram is not ordinary

It's amazing how they keep blaming ojukwu for the war, and forget that Gowon's refusal to abide by the "Aburi "peace Accord automatically led to the war.

Let's all not forget that Nzeogwu and co did not get up one fine day and started conducting a coup. There was already trouble in the land before then. The 1964 elections brought violence upon Nigeria and this spilled into 1965 with widespread killings particularly in the western region. By 1966, Nzeogwu had had a enough and struck. Nigeria was far from a peaceful country at the time

My uncle was part of the coup planners that failed to takeover Lagos alongside Ifeajuna .

Igbo officerss majorly planned the coup , it suCceded in the north with devastating effect, partly succeded in the west and did not have any effect in the EAST
An igbo officer benefited from the failed coup by becomming head of.State

If you were a northern military officer how would you feel ?

It is on record that Nzeogwu never supported the concept of Biafra , all he wanted was a one Nigeria .

Both were figureheads, no political power whatsoever. Dr. Orizu was just filling the gap.

Perhaps Orizu as head of parliament/senate president even had more power.

More curious was resignation of Jaja Wachuku barely hours before the coup. Though it was imposition of a certain staff on him in his ministry by the Fed govt that made him to resign. That probably saved his life. cheesy
