What does it mean to bind the strong man? Who is the strongman and who has the powers to bind him?

the strongman is the enemy(devil), we have to curtail some of his irregularities and evil works and we(the children of God)are to carry out such duties effectively

How do you curtail the enemies 'irregularities and evil work' and who gives you such powers?

Binding the strong man means to do something after the manner of Revelations 20:1-4 such that he is unable to perpetrate his activities among the people he is dominating.

And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more,
Revelations 20:1-3a

A vivid example of saints doing this is what Maria Woodworth-Etter did in the place called Devil's Den and John Oxtoby did in Filey. Here we act according to what we see the Father doing meaning we dont just act presumptuously, we wait on Him for orders before we act.

Bind is from the word bondage. It means to take into captivity. Or to take authority - over the spiritual power/ruler that has overall authority (strongman).

Christ used the phrase in reference to the absurd assertion that He was using a more powerful demon to get rid of other demons. He said a house cannot be divided against itself. In short, the prince was the strongman of the house under whose power the lesser demons worked. He cannot turn against himself. (This should bring into question witches claiming to help against powers of darkness.)

He also spoke replacing the strongman with another strongman. In reference to the Spirit of God. Now a prince of demons cannot do that.

in my opinion, at every good things one desire in life be it promotion, marital bliss, d fruit of d womb etc are bn stored one's heaven with a gate. A strongman is an evil power hindering one from passing into ones gate of breakthrough. D strongman could b evil powers from ones parents house, spirit husband or wife etc. The Bible says we wrestling nt against flesh but again power, principalities(I cnt remember d Bible verse) wickedness in high places, d strongman needs to b paralyse, destroy, removed from ones gate of breakthrough. It's only God dat has d power to bind him, one needs God's intervention in dealing wiv d strongman.

I also believe that a strongman can keep us captive with lies and half truths and it is only the Truth that we know that can make us free from the strongman. Jesus said "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free". smiley

True, it's by God's Power but for how long do we need to keep the strongman bound, should we leave it up to God to decide? undecided

That is for the Millenial reign. But now, perhaps until the purpose for which he is to be bound has been accomplished! That's why follow up and teaching must follow evangelism.

But the devil never gives up. he didn't give up on Jesus from birth to ascension and is still waiting for His coming back hence the third world war.

What does it mean to bind the strong man? Who is the strongman and who has the powers to bind him?

Suggested answers:

The phrase bind the strong man (or strongman) is a reference to a passage in the book of Mark, where Jesus is responding to some Jewish scribes who were accusing Him of being possessed by Beelzebul. Their argument was that "by the prince of demons he is driving out demons" (Mark 3:22). In other words, the reason the demons listened to Jesus was that they were in league with Him and recognized Him as their commanding officer, so to speak.

Jesus refuted their blasphemous argument with plain logic: "How can Satan cast out Satan?" (Mark 3:23) and then gave them a parable. First, Jesus spoke of the principle of a divided kingdom, which cannot stand (verses 24–26). Then He told them, "No one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house" (Mark 3:27). Jesus refers to Satan as the "strong man" and to Himself as the One who enters the house and plunders the place. Of course, before Satan allows his domain to be "plundered," he must be incapacitated. Jesus was not in league with Satan, as the scribes suggested, but had come to the earth, to what is essentially Satan’s “house” (1 John 5:19), in order to bind Satan and plunder his "goods," which are the souls of men (John 17:15; Luke 4:18; Ephesians 4:8 ).

A parallel passage says this: "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armour in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder" (Luke 11:21–22). Satan is strong, and he holds possessions that he guards jealously. But Jesus is the One who was and is stronger than the strong man. He is the only One who can bind the strong man and rescue us from his clutches (see John 12:31).

Some Christians, usually in the Charismatic or Pentecostal movements, apply Jesus' parable to the spiritual warfare that believers must wage. They teach that Christians are the ones who must "bind the strong man" in their lives or in their cities and then win the victory in Jesus' name. Some Charismatic preachers even name the "strong men" and attempt to identify the cities or geographical areas over which they hold power. Such doctrines go far beyond what Jesus said. The Lord's parable was simply to impress upon the scribes that He was not in league with Satan. Never does Jesus instruct us to "bind the strong man" or tell us how to do it. We do not have warrant to interpret the parable as a spiritual reality over geographical regions.
