Why Is Nigeria Absent At The Ongoing World Economic Forum by okwylnaz: 10:24pm On Jan 22, 2016 |
The World Economic Forum is currently going on in Davos, Switzerland. According to wikipedia, the WEF brings together top business leaders, international political leaders, selected intellectuals, and journalists to discuss the most pressing issues facing the world. So the WEF is an important body whose decisions affect world economic outlook significantly. So I feel Nigeria needed to be there especially now that our economic fortunes are tumbling. This is what the forum's website says about this year's participation: "It might come as a surprise to some but the largest group in Davos is non-business participants. Approximately 900 leaders from civil society, the public sector and academia have travelled to the Magic Mountain, including 45 top scientists and 20 Nobel laureates. More than 40 heads of state and government are coming to the Annual Meeting – a new record – including newly elected Justin Trudeau of Canada and Mauricio Macri of Argentina, as well as recently re-elected Alpha Condé from Guinea and Ranil Wickremesinghe from Sri Lanka. Around 300 ministers are joining to discuss global challenges ranging from health and climate change to the future of jobs." www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/01/davos-2016-in-numbers About 40 heads of state are at the meeting. Those who couldnt make, like the US sent representatives. South Africa is having a strong showing at the summit. Even Guinea is there. Why is Nigeria not represented. Tony Elumelu is there in his individual capacity. Even Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, much maligned by this administration, is there but the current finance minister is not. I don't know how the participants are chosen. If it is by invitation why was Nigeria not invited? If it is by choice, is it that our government does not consider it an important meeting to send a representative? Somebody needs to enlighten me. |
