abdulwastecx: True talk. I find that the arrangement of my interlocking stones are now disintegrating because after 15 months of installation, the compacted underlying sand in now settling. By the way, Abdulwastecx, is the depth of that foundation because the soil structure is good? OK have seen a couple of builders here with same "not too deep" foundation even in areas like ajah etc. |

PeoplesArmy: Compaction is very important for interlocks. It must be done in layers for a deep fill and with the help of a roller. This foundation will be thoroughly compacted by adding water to the filled and manually Compacting with an iron rammer 1 Like |

PeoplesArmy: Depth of foundation depends on a lot of things like soil type, water level, height above road level etc. I think this is the most economical considering integrity of the structures for the house 1 Like |

abdulwastecx: My engineer.... ride on jare... I am handling a similar project (3 bedroom flat) in umuahia. The cost of gravel scared my client (about 120k) that I decided to use local stone (also know as maggi) @ 34k per trip to save cost for him... Digging in umuahia is not costly I must say depending on how soft or hard the land is... here, they dig by partitions....one partition(i.e 12ft =3.6m) costs #800 (sloppy ground though) at 600mm depth... In fact, I used about #18k for digging my foundation (263.4ft/12ft = 22 partitions * #800 = #17,600).... I will update my work here when the time comes. Meanwhile, keep leading and I will be following...lol 4 Likes 1 Share |

Compaction of filled to achieve a very rigid foundation. The compaction was done by water g the foundation for ten hours after which a very heavy manually made rammer is used to compact the foundation to the required level 1 Like 2 Shares

Miscellaneous: Formwork is a is a platform use to enclose concrete in a civil engineering/building construction. it is a temporary structure that serve the above listed purpose a d it is removed (striking) after the concrete as set. For this foundation, the Formwork is that wood that is nailed to the edges round to get a reasonable height, level and to hold back the concrete. Dpc is an oversite concrete that is part of foundation but place at an height above ground level. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Abdulwastecx, I didn't notice any sign of reinforcements used esp. with regards to columns. I've heard of columns not being necessary in bungalows and load bearing walls (1 storey) buildings, but I've not really come to understand the reasons why. Could you please explain why. |
Re: Construction Of A Low Cost Three Bedroom bungalow In Suleja by Onuokwu: 10:54am On Feb 03, 2016 |
abdulwastecx: I notice that you did not use rods to reinforcethe dpc before casting. In another thread you had said that this was necessary. https://www.nairaland.com/2762704/construction-3bedroom-bungalow-somewhere-ajah/1 What is the fine difference before the two foundations and reason for deciding not to use rods in this one? |
Re: Construction Of A Low Cost Three Bedroom bungalow In Suleja by abdulwastecx(m): 11:00am On Feb 03, 2016 |
Onuokwu: That thread, if memory serves me well the builder specifically States that he is building a 'raft foundation'. The use of iron mesh is important, it add more assurance and protect the foundation when not properly compacted. We decided not to use iron mesh or y8 for variety of reasons like 1. The fill is low and fully compacted. 2. The building area is relatively small 3. The mass concrete will do just fine without mesh or light reinforcement 2 Likes 1 Share |
Re: Construction Of A Low Cost Three Bedroom bungalow In Suleja by abdulwastecx(m): 11:06am On Feb 03, 2016 |
karleone: Ok sir. I have made it a policy to build all my structures ( either bungalow or duplex) as frames structure ( building where there are columns and such columns carries all the load rendering the wall to be just partition wall) since most of the house we have been constructing are in the east or south South, where the soil is relatively soft. For this particular project on a relatively good terrain (suleja, niger state) and couple with the client limited budget we decided to use load bearing block wall. The block use was machine vibrated stone dust block with reasonable strength. That is the reason why we use 9''block throughout this bungalow. |

EgunMogaji: Because I want to achieve something reasonable 1.i want to have a uniform level on which my super structure will be built 2. I want to prevent moisture rising through the foundation 3. I want to have good platform on which floor rendering an tiling work will rest on 3 Likes |

Re: Construction Of A Low Cost Three Bedroom bungalow In Suleja by abdulwastecx(m): 11:33am On Feb 03, 2016 |

Re: Construction Of A Low Cost Three Bedroom bungalow In Suleja by karleone(m): 11:39am On Feb 03, 2016 |
abdulwastecx: Oh! I see! That's so lovely to hear. From a book I read, Elements of Reinforced Concrete design (can't remember the name very well), Engr. V. Oyenuga made some statements about using load bearing walls. One of them is, It must be machine made and each bag of cement should yield a maximum of 25 blocks (though I know it shouldn't just be 25 but should be within that number to obtain a good strength). He also talked about the Bearing Capacity of the soil ranging from 150Kn/m^2 ~ 200Kn/m^2; and from your explanation above, it's like the soil BC met the requirement. Now, what quantity of the Machine vibrated stone dust blocks are formed from a bag? Are your blocks made on site under your supervision so that the desired strength/number per bag would be achieved or they are made away from site? Because, I know most of these block industry guys are always after their pockets, not considering the required strength to be achieved. Sorry if my questions are annoying. I'm just a learner trying to building my CE experience. |
