Searching For A Job? Look Inwards! by eolutosin(m): 5:02pm On Oct 30, 2006 |
Looking For Job, Look Inward! I was on my way to a friend’s office in Opebi and was held up in traffic for close to 30 mins. Nobody could give me a clue as to what was causing the hold-up. What I saw at the Opebi junction afterwards really set me thinking. Unknown to me, one of the new generation banks was meant to organise her recruitment test that day. The test was meant to be in batches but you would see thousands of candidates waiting eagerly to write the test. The picture above actually shows the crowd waiting for their turn in front of the examination centre. This is not peculiar to this bank alone. I can still remember the experiences some of my friends had while trying to write the last Guinness Recruitment test. Some waited for hours and didnt even have the opportunity to write the test. A friend said that he had to leave the centre in annoyance when he found out that the 12:00 noon batch had not even written their test as at 4:00 pm when he was meant to write his own. The truth is that we would continue to witness an increase in the number of job seekers in this country many thanks to the graduates being produced by our education system every year and the limited number of jobs available. The irony of life is that I have seen people who get between 3 to 4 jobs at the same time and yet quite a lot of others have not been able to get one. What is the difference? The difference is definitely the quality of the products. The Minister of Education, in her presentation she called “CRISES” at the Presidential Forum on Education on Saturday, 28 October 2006, said that 7 out of every 10 graduates are UNEMPLOYABLE. This implies that the crowd I saw at that centre waiting to write the bank’s recruitment test is actually about 30% of the job seekers in this country. I would even say that only a very few percentage of this would be able to get jobs. Reason? Your guess is as good as mine. Let us begin to look inward and probably get a possible solution to this. You might think this does not affect you in any way since you are part of the fortunate few who have been able to get JOBS. But look around you, you would surely see some of your relatives who are yet to find job since the time they left school. They are part of the crowd I am talking about. If you are a graduate and still have not been able to get a job, you may need to do any of the following * Sharpen your axe * Create a concise resume * Learn a Trade * Read a book Just do something about your life. It is high time you started taking your destiny into your hand. In Lesson from a Cafetaria, I shared the story of a man who entered a cafetaria, sat down in one of the chairs and waited to be attended to. He waited for quite some time and nobody attended to him. An old man actually came to his rescue some minutes later and told him what is in operation in that restaurant. Friends, life, definitely, doesn’t give you what you deserve; It only gives you what you demand. Never sit down waiting for someone to make things happen for you. God will no doubt use men to lift you, but don’t sit idle, waiting for the lifting to come. Go for it! If nobody employs you, why not deploy yourself? Remember this - in life, you don’t wait to get served. You go out there, pick up your tray and take your turn! Source: http://www.yemma.com.ng/2006/10/30/looking-for-job-look-inward/ |

many Nigerian graduates are not employable at all!believe me,65% of the so called graduates, can't speak good English talkless of defending their certificates. Why subjecting a graduate in Nigeria to aptitude test?all these are indications of wrecked higher institutions.May God help Nigeria! |

Hi, This is a very nice contribution. Actually some peolpe have enormous talent in them but choose to denigrate themselves by walking the whole street looking for jobs that are not in existence or rather for the privileged few. I think we can achieve more by expending our energy into developing and actualizing our GOD given talents than begging people for our daiily bread (LOOKING FOR JOBS). More grease to your elbows my fellow lander!! |

Hm, I do not really blame the engineers that queue to work in a bank. The truth is that how many coys are available to employ the number that come out of our educational system every year? Anyway, if you are currently unemployed, I would suggest that you seek to acquire the necessary skills. One thing I have discovered is that your grade in school can only create a platform for you to be invited for test, whether you would get the job eventually depends on what you can do. So, let's start focusing on what you can do. It is well |

You shoud read eolutosins blog Excellent stuff. Lots of motivational articles that should inspire everyone. I've noticed that is a steady increase in Nigerian bloggers/entrepreneurs that are inspiratonal, motivated and highly enterprising that don't maon about the state of Nigeria but instead see the opportunities that abound in that environment. It certainly inspires someone like me that lives outside Nigeria to stop complaining and focus on achieveing my goals. I'd like to see all students in Nigerian Universities opening their eyes to the opportunities around them so that they start thinking for themselves and stop waiting for handouts from other people. Can you imagine that Malaysia achieved independence the same year as Nigeria and look at how advanced Malaysia is now? Only Africans can help Africa and that will start with us looking inward for solutions to our problems |

Good advise brother, I have actually learnt that if anyone stay idle for too long and continue blaming the economy for his being unemployed, that person may just be wasting a valuable time in his life because no matter how little or how small, something can be done to eihter upgrade your knowledge or your skills. |

Emmanuel, Great post! It is an awareness that we all need to have at this present time. I have heard so many people talk about being unemployed when there are so much to do! I remembered when I was still in school some years back and was wondering whether there was going to be any job for me in the labour market. I was comparing the level of education I was getting as a Mechanical Engineering student and what will be required of me outside, I used to be afraid until God came to my rescue. I discovered there is something inside of me GREATER than my certificate and ever since I have never looked BACK! What I have inside has being able to take me to where my certificate wouldn't have and whenever I looked back, I always thank God for helping make the decision NEVER to get a job! I can't imagine what life would have been for me if I have to wake up as early as 5:30am and come back prolly 10 at night and continue that cycle every given day of my life I am looking for a way to post an audio done by Robert Kiyosaki online. it is kind of heavy (48MB). When I eventually get that done, I will share it with every one. it is a must-hear for us all. I made this post to my blog some months back and I think it will buttress what Emmanuel have to say. http://naijamotivation.com/?p=7 Emmanuel, I will get in touch with you soon! There is something I need to share with you. |

That was a nice one. We need to accept the fact that , this thing is not unemployment , it is "unemployable". I think SMEs should be truthfully utilized. White collar jobs are not meant for everybody, go and learn a trade dont "monkey" yourself say you they read, where in actual fact u are just wasting your time This is not an insult, but a real true talk, cause your destiny can only come to pass if you decide. You cannot be someone else . you will always be yourself whether you like it or not. |

I just feel like dropping this line having gone through all the responses thus far. How do you think Nigerian youths can equip themselves right from school? I once told a friend that his school qualification would only be able to get him INVITATION for Job recruitment but would not give him the job. So, how can we make everyone EMPLOYABLE? |
Re: Searching For A Job? Look Inwards! by Gettolove(m): 10:17am On Nov 02, 2006 |
eolutosin: I think we should begin to aknowledge the fact that even if everyone is employable, not everyone will be employed, this is because there are few job opportunities in the country. When you look at the number of people that are seeking employment and compare it to how many vacancies are available, then you will understand what i am talking about. My advise is that, we should not put all hope in one direction because opportunities have no boundaries. @ the minister I don't know what the minister meant by saying "some graduates are not employable", because whatever the case is, they are all products of our tertiary institutions and the government should also look inward and put things in order. The cycle in our schools is all about GIGO (garbage in garbage out), when we are not thoroughly recycled what does the minister expect ? Our schools have been neglected over two decades by these ass holes and now instead of creating an enabling economy for more jobs to be created and put foods on our tables, they are telling us we are not employable but their children are employable. There is no one that is unemployable, the issue is just that not everyone will be suitable for a particular job. This is why apptitude is tailored towards getting the right people for the right jobs. |

Hello, I find the article below in today's Guadian newspaper. So, I decided to share it here FG insists on reform of education sector, Obasanjo rules out sentiments By Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi President Olusegun Obasanjo was surprised to see the sea of heads as he climbed the rostrum inside the banquet hall of the Aso Rock villa at the weekend. And he did not hide it. "I haven't seen this number of people in this hall before," he declared as he cleared his throat and took charge of the meeting. |
Re: Searching For A Job? Look Inwards! by toluchuks(f): 11:08am On Nov 02, 2006 |
Let yourself be motivated by positive possibilities.I think what we should start doing as graduates or before leaving school is to think of any business opportunities that will make us an employer not an employee.I believe there are so many opportunities if only we can explore. We all know that job opportunities are less so we should try and be the best in whatever we do,by our works we shall be known. |

hi, Lovely motivational write-up. but i must say its easier said than done. Don't get me wrong your points are true and can be useful for those looking for jobs. However, we can't shy away from the fact that the system is bad. Another recommendation i will like to add to all you have said its that build on NETWORKS(friends and good relationships). This might be the extra factor that can help after dopting all the tips you have suggested. Nice job!! Keep articles like this coming |

this is a very " high' motivational write up. but how can one look inward without having the means to do so. the other day a friend came to me for advice about how to go on in life as an applicant. i advice him to at least be a bit enterprise so as to get some food on the table. next day he came back to inform me that he have an idea about a business that will need about five hundred thousand as start-up capital. He now want me to assist him to raise the money towards the project. what do you want me to say to such person? |

Bigtee: The fact that system is bad, doesn't me it should hold us down. It has NEVER being easier for anybody and the mindset we ought to have is, IF OTHERS CAN, THEN I CAN! Despite the system being bad, are there no people making something? Why do the Lebanese keep trooping here if trully our system is BAD? me think it is a mindest thing. Whatever you think is real, becomes your reality. Nothing should hold us down; not our environment, society or even our background. The only person that can hold you back is YOU! I just finished reading a book, Attitude is Everything, By Jeff Keller and I learnt the problem of man is the problem from his mind. It is all an attitude thing. If the Lebanese could see gold right on our streets, why not us? Isn't there something wrong with us? Please let's us all ponder on this. How is our attitude affecting us? CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE, CHANGE YOUR LIFE -- JEFF KELLER |

atifesamue: MEANS! Everytime I keep hearing that word! Please tell your friend to look for what he can start with 5k or 10k! There are so many things he could start small unless if he is looking for excuses for not starting. I started my Web designing biz with just 5k! I used the money for publicity. I had no computer and any other thing. I could have waited till I was able to raise 50K for a computer b4 I could start! When you look for excuses for not doing worthy things, you will always have ENOUGH! But you have made up your mind not to give excuses any room in your life, you will start something, no matter how small it is. Visit the link below to read an article I just post on my website and you will surely have a rethink. Focus more on the Pastor Makinwa's story www.naijamotivation.com I hope this helps someone. Love you. |
Re: Searching For A Job? Look Inwards! by eolutosin(m): 7:54am On Nov 03, 2006 |
In Retire Young Retire Rich, Robert Kiyosaki said, "what you think is real becomes your reality". As long as you think you need money to start a business, you would not start anything. You definitely have something in you that you can exchange for money. I would like to refer to Pastor Makinwa whose story Bola Oni already shared in his previous replies. This is a man that was an icon of success if you look at it from a corporate world perspective but he soon discovered that he had nothing. All his life, he had been living on Company's car, company house, company's this and company's that. He would soon be celebrating his 4o years birthday then and chose to do something with his life. He left comfort of his paid job for uncertainty. His wife even left him at that time but today, he is a testimony of the saying, "where is a will, there is a way". Today, he is not only a successful business man but he is far ahead of his colleagues. Now, back to the question of how can one look inward without having the means to do so. God does not make mistake with his creation. He definitely creates everyone whith something unique. It is your responsibility to discover this and make the best use of this. You do not have to start a bif business, you can start home-tutorial. You can be going to houses to teach students preparing for WAEC or JAMB. I have a friend who used to make a lot of money from this. He stayed at this for some time before he joined one of the oil companies. Today, he is outside the country studying for his MSc. So, take time out to look inward. You might not discover your gifts immediately but stay at it and sooner than you expect, you would reap the reward. NB: Read a book today |

Re: Searching For A Job? Look Inwards! by eolutosin(m): 11:00am On Nov 03, 2006 |
These past few days have been sort of reflections for me. Something in me just keeps telling me that I am more than this. I feel the urgency to speed up the pace at which I match my actions with my talks. I was reading the responses to my post Searching for Job, Look inward, and one comment strikes me. I have decided to use this medium to answer one of the questions raised - how can one look inward without having the means to do so? God does not make mistake. As such, HE has created everyone with something unique. There was something going on in his mind when he created you. Your responsibility is to look inward and discover this God-given ability. This will not come to you on a platter of gold as you have have to make a conscious effort to achieve this. U still remember one of Newton’s laws of motion? Nothing moves until you move. This same law still exists today and governs most, if not all, of all that happens to us in life. You know what? Everyone can not work in paid employment. Someone of us have to start a business even if it means you are using your house as the office. The earlier we accept this reality the better for us. Heard of Fela Durotoye? He pulled out of what a lot of people seemly call a comfort zone to start his business – VIP Consulting. Today, the company stands as one of the best in the industry. What is his success secret? I may be wrong but I believe his determination to pursue his dream is one of the critical success factor. Friends, you have what it takes to do whatsoever you want to do. It might stretch you and require that you apply your heart to discipline but it is worth all the effort. Decide today to live your life the way you want. Re: Searching For A Job? Look Inwards! by felichris: 6:47pm On Nov 06, 2006 |
A lot need to be done by our government to salvage the situation of unemployment. Graduates should be empowered financially after graduation. Look at the NYSC Sheme: Graduates came out of the scheme to become poorer than the were before their enrolment into it. How can you give somebody money with right hand only to collect it back with left hand? The money is just for them to take care of themselves throughout the period, that is all. I have no doubts that the scheme favours those who could influence their posting. I am suggesting that the total sum of money earmarked per person for the one year period be given to each of our graduates after the three-week orientation camping. This will go a long way to empower them. No more posting to the place of primary assignments. With this, they can start something. |

felichris: We all have a choice! A choice to attend the NYSC or not. Well let me tell you, I regretted spending 5 years of my life in the University gaining nothing and I made up my mind NEVER to serve! Why should I waste another year on youth service? I was persuaded severely, told of some abstract consequences but I stood my ground. So if some people decide to go and waste their time and lives by going into one bush or where ever to do something that won't influence their lives in any way, it is their choice. I have always believed this life is all about CHOICE! You choose your choice and the choices you choose, determines what you get out of life. |
