The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, on Tuesday, decried the recent hike in electricity tariff by the Federal Government.
According to CACOL, the increase would amount to a corrupt practice to force the tariff increase on people.
“We note that in spite of public outcry against any hike, the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing superintended upon by Mr Babatunde Fashola, former governor of Lagos State, has gone ahead to illegally impose a tariff hike on electricity on Nigerians for services not rendered to them. This is flagrant and audacious corruption in a situation where the Federal Government claims to be fighting against corruption and illegality.
“Mr Babatunde Fashola should be told that the ministry he superintends over is not meant for the kind of antics that he got away with in Lagos State when he was governor,” the Executive Chairman of CACOL, Mr Debo Adeniran, said.
According to him, it was the nation’s electricity firms and the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that owed Nigerians money and apologies for not rendering adequate services that they received money for and continued to receive money for.
“Therefore, we reject this hike in electricity tariff in totality. We demand that power supply should be made available and accessible to all and a billing system that will be transparent, reasonable and commensurate with consumption should be provided.
“The DISCOs and NERC can take a cue from the telecommunications sector by providing meters; fixing the cobweb-like cables that dangle over the heads of people,” the CACOL boss said.
Adeniran stated further that the demand by the electricity distribution companies for cost reflective tariff so as to remain in business should be placed side by side with effective service delivery, after which the issue of tariff increase can be discussed.
“Until we fix our power sector, all the talk about the industrial revolution plans and creating jobs and wealth for Nigerians, will just be mere talks and a waste of time. All hands must be on deck to make sure Nigerians have stable electricity supply.
“We, therefore, urge the activist community, the masses, the labour movement and all that abhors exploitation and oppression to rise and resist the demonic and unjustifiable hike in electricity tariffs. We must move against the ‘change’ we did not vote for, to protect our being, and the struggle for a humane society,” the statement said

The power sector isn't the island sector he "biasly" favoured and claimed he developed Lagos. I mean, I pay a fee to use a public road in lekki.

The housing scheme is only affordable by the elites.
You cannot build a house in Lagos without paying some tattered uneducated outlaws called omo omile, after you've settled the legal land deals with the state and local governments angry

A woman pepper seller who barely sells 2k a day would pay hell of a tax to same set of legalized agberos.

Oh! Have you ever had a chat with those keke riders? About the "whatever" money they pay to Indian hemp chimneys called ticketers?

All thanks to Mr fash.

Fashola, power ministry isn't island of Lagos. Whatever increment you impose, these arent Lagos, Abuja or PHC consumers, there are also sokoto's, taraba's, kebbi's and other region where 1k is a great deal.

I dont care if there is need for increment.

What i care for is that many people that will pay this are being owed salary for months.

What i care for is that we have been paying for service not rendered.

What i care for is that the current economic policies have made it difficult for most Nigerians to feed.

Fashola should care too

Looks like everyone has become clueless all of a sudden, this increase was part of the agreement with the discos from inception, in fact implementation has been delayed for too long.
Fashola has help us remove 750 naira fixed charge, nobody is talking about that one.

BEFORE YOU CRUXIFY FASHOLA, Read This

With reference to the new electricity tariff hike, I think we Nigerians have to reason well before we condemn the development.

Firstly, we all must appreciate the fact that the monthly fixed charge (a terror in disguise) had been abolished.

With all sincerity, this fixed charge has being a treat to Nigerians unknowingly. Today, we pay for what we use unlike before when a community transformer develops fault for three months and still charge to pay three months fixed charged. This is a total liberation from robbery.

Now let's bring out the analysis:

Ikeja DISCO for instance was charging N14.96 per unit and with an increment of N8, will now be 22.96.

Therefore to recharge prepaid N5000 will get
5000/22.96 = 217.77 units

But before the increment, with N5000 you get =284 1units instead of 334units (50.1)

Now 284.10units - 217.77 units= 66.33 units.
whereas N750/month fixed charge worths 50.1 units

It means you were being cheated with 50units monthly
Now 66.33 - 50.13 = 16.20units

This mean your monthly robbery has been reduced to 16.20units with greater advantages. It calls for celebration...!

In some areas where they don't enjoy constant power supply, 217.77units might last up to 2months. Especially when transformer develops fault, rain storm falls electric pole, the fear for accumulated fixed charges has been removed.

There were areas who never used light for 4months, after the instalment of their transformer in the fifth month, they had to pay N3,750 fixed charge for 5months.

We must appreciate this development. We had been under cheating leadership for long and this present crops are bent to bring relief holistically. Let's all shun criticism that could frustrate their thrive

May God Bless Nigeria

Fashola should first ensure adequate electricity supply before increasing the tariff. You don't put the cart before the horse.

That's the problem.

The 8 years of Fash in Lagos was just one long brown envelope media campaign.
It irritates me that some APC here ( I voted APC) think Fashola is the saviour of the SW and the best thing to come out of Odua since Awo - it is an insult !
