Brig. General Murtala Muhammad (Former Head of State of Nigeria)

A United States declassified memo of August 18, 1975 showed that late Head of State, Brig. General Murtala Muhammad committed genocide against the Igbo during the Biafra Civil War.
The memo from John E. Reinhardt to the U.S. Secretary of State titled: Nigeria After the Coup of July 28, said; This memorandum is presented in response to your request of August 14. It is concerned with the nature of the new government, its prospects, and continuing of American interests.”

The memo declassified on May 4, 2006 with ref number PA/HO Department of State, E.O. 12958, as amended, contradicts the official position of the Nigerian government which exonerated Muhammad from being involved in the coup that sacked General Yakubu Gowon from power, as well as denying the genocide perpetrated by the Nigerian Army under the late Head of State’s command during the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War.

On the new leadership, Reinhardt wrote: “The leader of the coup against General Yakubu Gowon is an erratic, vainglorious, impetuous, corrupt, vindictive, intelligent, articulate, daring Hausa.

“Brigadier Murtala Muhammad was a prime force in the Nigerian coup of July 1966, which brought Gowon to power, and is one of the two principal plotters against Gowon for the past two years. He commanded a division during the Nigerian civil war , was involved in the only documented cases of genocide, won one important battle, and thereafter coasted for upwards of two years until Gowon finally removed him from command and placed him in charge of Army signals. A position he held until last month, though he combined his military role with the civilian position of Commissioner (Minister) of Communications from July, 1973 until the coup.”

The memo further stated that: “Muhammad inherits from Gowon vast petroleum resources (potentially 3-3.5 million BPD, based on known reserves), considerable but neglected agricultural wealth, tremendous but untapped natural gas reserves, other minerals (coal, tin, columbite, uranium), by African standards an excellently trained civil service, and the dubious asset of eighty million people.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on the 40th memorial lecture of the late Head of State said, Mohammed was on his way to putting Nigeria back to the path of order and discipline before his assassination in a military coup on February 13, 1976. Buhari said Mohammed showed “genuine interest and concern for up-and-coming officers like myself,” and “described him as a great personality who made huge sacrifice for the country.”

The truth will always overshadow lies, no matter how long......

After all these atrocities, seizing our properties, stealing our money and denying us our rights as Nigerians, you think it will ever be well with Nigeria?

See whether you like it or not, every thing that is wrong with Nigeria today is a curse it incurred as a result of the evil it met at the children of God...

You wonder why the north has remain perpetually unproductive and the westerners keep suffering from perpetual laziness and decline in honour?

Am sure Awo regretted his actions and I forgive him for he knew not what he was doing.

There was no justification for the progrom, the war itself and other subsequent actions taken by the Nigerian government against their Nigerian fellows, if truly their actions was to bring them back to Nigeria...

Just see how they ended, from Murtala to Awo to Adekunle. The so called civil war heroes, none can be compared to Ojukwu

You wonder why the shadow of biafra still hunts Nigeria especially the officers that fought the war.

No resting place for the evil.

It doesn't matter much where it was acquired, the fact remains that he made sense in his submission. The same way some of you could not see the change they meant, and now see where we are.

But America and Britain are both evil nations, how come they know about these evils and kept it secret until after along time without even sanctioning the perpetrators of these evil crimes...

Meanwhile Buhari should watch his back, this is not 1967. This time he will be shamed

When a classified report is written with too much aim to implicate rather than inform on a subject, its questionable..

Often times I wonder why Igbos and so called Biafrans talk about the civil war and quickly link it with genocide. I wonder too why half of a yellow sun movie adopted from the book of same name will try to portray the Nigerian government in bad light without actually narrating the whole event as it occurs. It is a shame too that history is no longer taught in schools like in the old past and many supposedly educated youths are naive.

What actually happened before the civil war?

There was a Igbo Coup.. The first coup d'etat in Nigeria. Almost all of the coupists were of Igbo origin. Not a single Igbo blood was shed. Lots of Northerners and Yorubas lost their lives. Worst still, there was jubilation amongst the Igbos. Songs were made to mock the dead. Hilarious pictures mocking the dead was circulated by the Igbos. No Igbo leader or group came out to condemn the coup. An Igbo man by the name Aguyi Ironsi became the head of state. His government shielded and refused to punish the Igbo coupists which was all the majority of the northerners and the Yorubas wanted. Igbos in the north were publicly in support of the coup even though northerners were in mourning. The deaths of the northerners and the Yorubas were uncalled for and an unprovoked attack. These are what eventually led to the civil war. This is what the IPOB and Biafran agitators don't mention.

The first coup led to a counter coup where many Igbo and a few Yorubas lost their lives. The northerners took over and in retaliation of their support for the first coup, northerners started killing them. They fled to the east in droves. Ojukwu declared Biafra.

Yet the monkeys that inhabit that cursed hell-hole still wonder why the damNATION will never progress even if the angels empties all the heavenly resources on it. It is a haunted house, cursed beyond redemption! Keep deceiving yourselves shouting God bless nigeria. God will bless hell-fire first before ever blessing a cursed evil.entity. Thank God i'll soon have new passport that confers on me the ability to belong to a sane country and travel anywhere i want on the surface of the earth. Hunger kill all of una there! Devil punish you blood-sucking violent and evil scoundrel. The civilized world will keep spitting on you until you seperate the forces with that cursed entity into manageable parts.

You can never trust any human govt. NEVER.
How won't America classify such atrocities and declassify it about 4 decades later?
America committed a genocide by killing VIRTUALLY ALL THE RED INDIANS who once occupied America; The Mohicans, Delaware's etc. They also once committed genocide on Vietnam. Most human govt ALWAYS like "removing anyone on their paths" and the cases of various Civil Wars in various countries will tell you basically that both divides of agitating govt always tow the paths of genocide or its potential (or should I say democide?)
Let me give you an example, during the Nigerian Civil War, Biafra knew to win Nigeria it must seize Lagos. The only way to do that is to march on Lagos. The people of Ore and Ijebu did not want such, hence they attempted to deny them the Right of Passage( anyway, its Ore and Ijebu land of course). Biafran soldiers became angry, wanted to force their ways and in the process of defense by Ore and Ijebu natives, they massacred some of them (well, we could term that a genocide). This drew the erstwhile Yoruba tribe into the battle which remains the critical point in the Civil War.
Were Ore and Ijebu not right in refusing advancing rebels right of passage? Why massacre them because you have more military might? Was the reprisal not too cruel? Should Biafrans have looked on while Federal troops were using Ore has a launchpad against them? All these questions will always be answered in bias. History (depending on whose side you hear it from) will always play on our emotions and intelligence. The best we can always do is bury the ghost of the Civil War and outgrow our individual and collective pains (my father will always remind me that Biafrans killed 2 of his best friends but I always remind him Federal Troops killed over 2millions of Biafrans). The pains will always be there till the ghosts are buried.

you are wrong because u don't know what you are saying, please go and make a good research of what led to the first coup and the reason that made no Igboman to be killed during the first coup, please history doesn't go well with sentiment, you are too sentimental.
