The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) says it will commence an indefinite strike by 12 midnight today (Feb. 17) if the Federal Government failed to meet members’ demands. The National President of the Medical and Health Workers Union who also doubled as JOHESU National Chairman, Mr Biobebelemoye Josiah, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja. Josiah explained that members are demanding for improved working conditions, including the implementation of skipping of Grade Level 10. According to him, JOHESU is asking for adjustment of the 2009 CONHESS salary table and allowances as was done for the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in January 2014. He described government insensitivity to the demands as “provocative, insulting and unjust in the worst dimension in a democratic dispensation’’. Josiah lamented that members of the union were being subjected to discrimination and industrial marginalisation in the health sector in favour of NMA members. On the issue of skipping of Grade level 10, he noted that rather than paying them the money government went ahead to pay medical doctors which he claimed were not entitle to such allowance by law. Josiah also explained that the court ruled in their favour that they should be paid, adding that government failed to respect the court injunction. However, Josiah called on the federal government to give priority attention and capture the financial implication of the demands in this year’s health sector budget. According to him, JOHESU comprised more than 99 per cent of service deliverance in the health system, noting that government failure to meet the demands would have negative impact on the country’s healthcare delivery. “JOHESU members and doctors are treated differently, even when it is not the right of doctors to earn specific pay they accord them the pay which is part of the problems we are passing through. “This now brings disharmony because there is no fair administration of the health system which is part of the things that is causing disharmony and turbulence in the system, to avoid that the President should change such act,’’ he said. JOHESU is an umbrella body of all professional and non-professional health workers, excluding medical doctors.

you should know that doctors cannot run the hospital alone. ..our problem in this nation can be likened to two children of the same parents. you want to receive a better favour than your siblings even though the source of the favour is none of your business.

Doctors and nurses can never be in the same category. We should get that into our skull.

Nurses even have better and more off duties. How many do doctors have? As a doctor, you work all thru the day, do midnight call and still work the second day. How many nurse ever do that? Even during the day, it's 2 shifts for nurses.

And for closing early, that happens mostly with consultants. CNOs and matrons also close for the day only to return next day. No night shift.

It's like a library staff saying he wants to become a VC.

We cry for Change, we want change but we don't want to change. You think Change is in Buhari's Katsina Farm or In the boot of Innoson motors or in Aba market? We see Dasuki, Alison, and the likes as Heartless, you must also not steal big money before you are considered heartless, IF YOU DON'T HAVE A HEART TO FEEL NIGERIAN'S PAIN, AND BE READY TO SACRIFICE TO MAKE IT WORK, THOU ART ALSO HEARTLESS. I am not saying you should not demand for or you should not seek improved Welfare and working terms, but please Its not the right time to go on strike. If you see the woman called Nigeria now, She can't cry tears anymore coz she has no one left to shed. SHE IS CURRENTLY BLEEDING. If She must be better, we must play our roles.

even though doctors cannot run the hospital alone doesn't mean a hospital cleaner should demand to be at par with a doctor. Did u even read op's post? There are some things that are uncalled for. If johessu wants to ask for pay rise they should do so outrightly and not always use doctors as reason theirs has to be increased. How do we even reason in this country. These people are just plain greedy, envious and jealous. The so called increase in doctors' salary is the relativity which they forced us into. Mind you, they have been enjoying this for God knows how many years. These people will only be satisfied when a cleaner goes home with same pay package as a doctor. Plain beef. PMB should just fix these people where they belong.

is the above stated reasonable? How do they know the specific pay that is the right of doctors. They have constituted themselves to national salaries wages and income commission to stipulate what a doctor should go home with. Is this not pure envy. Let's bring common sense reasoning into this. Please how do you want a doctor and cleaner or driver or lab scientist to be treated alike or in same manner? I'm not degrading any profession but everybody has limits. It's just like saying an office clerk should be treated same way as the director, paid same salary and allowances. In which sane clime is that obtainable. This is the time to disband JOHESU. It was formed with no productive cut out aim than to gang up against doctors. Else why would an association be formed with membership of all groups of workers in the hospital with the exception of doctors?

even amongst themselves, there is strife and division. Which one is graduate nurse. The condition of service of nurses in Nigeria cannot be the worst in the world. You need to go to Kenya or central African Republic or Congo. That said, condition of service of almost all profession in Nigeria is bad when you compare with developed nations.

Why must Johesus predicates its demand on what doctors have or have not? Why are their fights always against the doctors in the health sector? They claimed they constitute 99% in health sector yet they are incapable of any demand without dragging doctors into it.

It is obvious Johesus was formed with a single aim of fighting the doctors. They need to be disbanded and put where they belong. Their action is akin to that of a terrorist organization.

is it your business how much FG decides to pay them...is it your money or will it stop you from receiving your own salary if FG decides to pay them the same thing with doctors? the problem we have in this country is not only corruption but hypocrisy also. it is not possible for a cleaner to receive the same salary with doctors because in the first instance their entry grade level is not the same. how can a cleaner who enters with first school leaving certificate collect the same salary with doctors please stop whipping up sentiments and public sympathy, you people will always bring up this issue so that the public will think that the demands of JOHESU are not legitimate. all JOHESU is saying is that everybody is an employee of the federal government and that payment should be made accordingly and for your information in wage demand sometimes you have to make your demands look outrageous so that after negotiations you'll get exactly or close to what you actually want. so doctors should quit being cry babies whenever JOHESU demands for an increase in wages.

Mr man, so you now place medical scientists on the same pedestal with cleaners? Did you ask to join Johesu but was turned down. Medical interns (the one you call house officers) and residents don't earn more than Clinical Scientists in the united States, Australia and even south Africa only your consultants (in some fields) do but as a pre-NYSC house officer in Nigeria you want earn more than experienced Senior Scientists that can even lecture your residents in Nigerian teaching hospitals. God forbid!

Mr. Man, why won't I place medical scientists on the same pedestal with cleaners when u have same umbrella body covering u. Did u say u want medical scientists to be treated same way with doctors? No. U say u want same treatment for doctors given to JOHESU. Who is JOHESU. Your senior scientists can lecture resident doctors on what please. I can see you are completely deluded. I think FG should come up with strict terms of reference for each profession and this nonsense will end.

Physicians have been predicating and controlling what others earn since the 1980s when their man Dr. Ransome-kuti skewed everything to their favour in the spirit of espirit de corps. Why cry fowl now that other professionals have woken up and are playing the same cards that you've profitted from for decades?

you are really sounding senseless. If it's not my business what FG pays johessu, why is it urs what they pay doctors. Y can't u just ask for your pay rise without dragging doctors into it and comparing urs with doctors. Did u enta service with the same degree with doctors? Do you do the same work doctors do? Go to your teaching hospitals and general hospitals, when your residents come for laboratory rotations they are schooled by senior scientists as part of their training in pathology in other to understand how to effectively request medical investigations and they do it free. If it were physicians they would have been asking for "Training fee". If you are still in school, you say so, so that i can respond to your Senior regs and Consultants and not inexperienced young blokes.

seriously, I don't think u have entered any teaching hospital. We have consultant pathologists whose duty is to train residents. U don't have what it takes to learn what we learn let alone do the teaching.! That is why we need consultant pathologists for accreditation. Who are the consultant pathologists? Doctors of course. So don't come here typing rubbish.

People see Johesus as an organization of unserious bunch when they could not independently demand for what they think is rightly theirs. I don't mind what a cleaner in the health sector earns but such a demand should not be measured on what a 0.01% gets.

Johesus should have come forward with its demands without reference to doctors. Their reference to doctors already watered down their demands and make it looks a childish rivalry.

I'm already outside my little man. Canberra to be precise. Here we are called Medical Scientists, after my internship and Nysc, I sent my evaluated qualification down to Aussie before writing the AUSTRALIAN INSTITITE OF MEDICAL SCIENTIST licensure exams.
https://www.aims.org.au/

Nomenclature may be country-dependent but global functions remains the same, in UK and Ghana it's Biomedical Scientist, in Norway it's Biogenior, in the US it's Clinical lab Scientist/Clinical Scientist, In Nigeria it's Medical lab Scientist/Scientist. The functions remains the same from investigations, result interpretation down to clinical experiments and research. Some may go on to specialize in Forensics and even Clinical Embryology. The profession is a dynamic one in civilized countries even though you guys think a ceiling should be placed over it.
