This is a laudable project ....

but my fellow nairalanders we need to look in to this matter holistically, Ogoni land never an oil spillage area before now and if it was now then something must be responsible for such.

Problem sometime is one thing and solving it in real sense of it is another thing. cleaning the land might be what the Niger Delta people want but I stand for something more.

If the oil bonkers refused to stop their activities, this project will be an amount to wasting of money.

Ogoni people should themselves, orientate their issues and frown at any activity which can leads to oil spillage, owning to the fact that, Ogoni land belong to the people dwell therein and only these people will always responsible for either good or bad thing going on, on the land.

This is a great move! However, I hope they will stop blowing up pipelines, bringing disease and sickness to themselves and generations unborn only for Nigeria to spend billions of dollars cleaning-up their mess. It would be better if the same billions of dollars is used for research and development which results in making tangible machines, devices and products that can be sold internationally and earn more Forex for them and the country!

Devastating oil spills in the Niger delta over the past five decades will cost $1bn to rectify and take up to 30 years to clean up, according to a UN report.

The UN Environment Programme (Unep) has announced that Shell and other oil firms systematically contaminated a 1,000 sq km (386 sq mile) area of Ogoniland, in the Niger delta, with disastrous consequences for human health and wildlife.

Nigerians had "paid a high price" for the economic growth brought by the oil industry, said Unep's executive director.

A leaked summary of Unep's Ogoniland study, the first large-scale scientific study of pollution in the area, has been seen by the Guardian. It calls for a clean-up fund of $1bn (£614m) for spills in Ogoniland, and says it will take 25-30 years to restore the environment. Much of the funding for the clean-up is expected to come from the oil companies.
Stop your gullibility,APC is lying to Nigerians, Oil spillage clean up in Niger Delta did start with APC government and will not end with it,Nigerian don't like to learn, they believe whatever their politicians is telling them and they continue to be in darkness

Despite the epistle you wrote, you failed to give evidence that cleaning up has started under GEJ: you can provide the link to back up your claim to see where it was approved.

However, who ask you whether it will take up 100 years to complete? Your argument is as fake as GEJ till 2019.

It was GEJ that initiated the cleaning project signed by the major oil companies. Shell is going to provide the bulk of the money for the clean up. It is not Buhari led APC government that started the initiative, The commencement of the clean up is from the agreement signed by oil companies under GEJ and led by UN habitat and other environmental agencies, the initiative is dated back to GEJ administration, is a gradual process that will take upto 30 years according UN research. APC should be telling Nigerians the truth instead of scoring cheap political point by brain washing Nigerians.

It doesn't matter when the clean up started, the most important thing is that the cleaning process will continue and life will be better for the people affected. Everything shouldn't always be about Gej and Pmb or APC and PDP. May God bless Nigeria.

GEJ initiated, that is what you guys keeps saying. He initiated electricity, he initiated railway etc: when will you grow up? Cleaning up of ND has been on the agenda of every government even since the days of military.

If it is a gradual process which will require 30 years to be implemented fully, is that an indication that it must take 100 years before it takes off?

May be because of cluelessness or unguarded corrupt practices under his watch is what I don't know, but be informed that GEJ seeks no approval and implemented nothing as far as cleaning land of ND is concerned.

Don't think this forum is for those who lack deep mental horizon: if you have link or pictures that can show us the journey so far, you can post it here for justification.

Enough of this fictitious argument.

GEJ revive the railway system and make it to start functioning again, Achieved 6000MW of electricity in generation and save $30B in foreign reserve despite completing so many projects, the APC is making it to look as if GEJ did not do anything while taking glory of most GEJ projects by brainwashing Nigerians, last month Amaechi commission a completed Abuja-Kano-Maiduguri modern rail line and make it to look as if it where an APC, instead phrasing GEJ for reviving Nigeria dead rail transport.

They wail because they are sentimental, small minded, backwards and offcourse tribal bigots. Infact they are so blinded by these traits they would rather suffer and live in anarchy as long as they win the "tribal battle". This is 2016, yet people cannot see eye to eye on issues that may help them in the longrun.
