Mikel blames poor finishing for shock Chelsea defeat

By Shina Oludare

The Blues’ midfielder admitted that his team was wasteful in front of goal as they were toppled by the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light

John Obi Mikel felt Chelsea paid the price for not converting their chances in their 3-2 defeat to Sunderland on Saturday.

Guus Hiddink’s men were 2-1 at the break but Sam Allardyce’s men scored twice in a three-minute second-half spell to silence the Blues at the Stadium of Light.

And the Nigerian blamed his side's inability to convert their chances for their defeat despite a bright start.

“We started the game well and for the first 30 to 35 minutes we had control and we were playing well,” Mikel told club website.

“We were creating chances, moving the ball quickly and players wanted to get involved.

“In the second half, we came out and we wanted to carry on where left off but we didn’t kill the game when we had the chances to do it.

“Then Ivanovic went down, the referee didn’t blow the whistle, we stopped a little and they scored the second goal. From then, they had some momentum, they built on that and got the third goal.”

The Super Eagles skipper believes the Black Cats were helped by a sell-out crowd at the Stadium but remained swayed they should have won the game.

“Their fans were on top of them and supporting them, and rightly so because they have to save their Premier League status,” he continued.

“They came out to fight and play. But if we killed the game when we had the chances and opportunities I don’t think they would have come back into the game.”

CAF fine Egypt and Nigeria
By Abdelrahman Amr

The CAF disciplinary committee has fined Egypt and Nigeria for incidents that occurred during their African Cup of Nations qualification double-header in March.

The Pharaohs drew 1-1 in the first encounter, and subsequently defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the following fixture.

Egypt was punished because of the excessive use of lasers from fans during the second match played in Alexandria. CAF has announced that Egypt will pay a $5000 fine.

The Super Eagles, meanwhile, were also fined $5000 for overcrowding at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium during the first leg match. It is estimated that over 40,000 fans were present during the game, while the stadium’s full capacity is only 25,000.

Well I do not follow live matches in the league so can't tell. However, you have to be exceptional when it involves black and the white. If I may also ask where has Enyeama's excellent reflexes taken his Club to? I wish he won the award. But the last time he came close to breaking the record of minutes played without conceding a goal, yet he was denied the award, let a lone now that he was not that impressive. White will always be white. Wish him the best. I still dream he comes back to man our goal post.

Nigeria's Mbakogu misses 2 penalties for Serie A club

Jerry Mbakogu

Nigerian striker Jerry Uche Mbakogu failed to lift his Italian Serie A side Carpi when it mattered most on Sunday as he missed two penalty kicks in a 2-0 home loss to Lazio.

Carpi are 18th on the 20-team Serie A table and deep in the relegation zone with 35 points from 37 games.

Mbakogu missed a spot kick in the 15th minute when the game was goalless.

The 23-year-old striker then missed the second penalty in the 41st minute, when the game was 2-0.

He has scored just once this season.

He scored 15 goals last season to help Carpi gain promotion to Serie A.

Ogenyi Onazi, who is preparing for his wedding, was an unused substitute for Lazio.

Chelsea loanee Omeruo scores own goal in Turkey

Omeruo (left) in action for Kasimpasa in Turkey.

Nigeria international defender Kenneth Omeruo has scored an own goal in Kasimpasa’s 2-0 loss at Konyaspor.

The Chelsea loanee turned the ball into his own net in the 40th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in continuation of the Turkish league on Monday.

Kasimpasa are eighth on the league table with 44 points from 32 games.

Omeruo has been outstanding for the Turkish Super league team since his loan deal from Chelsea, but he is not likely to sign a permanent deal with Kasimpasa at season’s end as they cannot afford to buy him outrightly.

Will Nigeria replace injured Samuel with West Ham target Adi?

Fanendo Adi - Will he finally debut for Eagles?

by Samm Audu

There are strong indications that Portland Timbers striker Fanendo Adi could replace injured CSKA Moscow star Aaron Samuel for the Super Eagles friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg.

Nigeria face Mali on May 27 in Rouen, France, before they battle Luxembourg on June 1 as they begin their preparations for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in earnest.

Samuel damaged knee ligaments during the recent Russia Cup final and has been effectively ruled out of the Eagles test games.

AfricanFootball.com specially gathered that several top officials are favourably disposed to Adi finally getting his long-awaited chance to debut for the Eagles after he failed to do so in March during the AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

Coach Sunday Oliseh was also planning to fly out to the United States of America to run the rule on the big striker, before he sensationally threw in the towel.

The 25-year-old target man is joint leading scorer in the Major League Soccer (MLS) with seven goals after his 18 goals last season helped Portland Timbers to clinch a historic championship.

Onazi, who is preparing for his wedding scheduled for June 18, was introduced to the game in the 51st minute for Felipe Anderson.

"It was a good game for us, we played well and deserved to win the game,” Onazi told AfricanFootball.com

“I am always happy when we win games, this is no different and I am happy to be part of it."

Jerry Uche Mbakogu, who missed two penalties for Carpi, scored the consolation goal for his team in the 84th minute.

Nigerian Exports: Igiebor Marks Return With Goal; Musa Mohammed Yet To Debut; Omeruo Loses; Esiti,Obilor Clock Up 90 Minutes

Allnigeriasoccer.com checks on the progress of players of Nigerian descent in the European Leagues on Monday.

The 18-year-old striker David Okereke was left out of the Spezia match day squad against Brescia. It finished 2-1 in favour of the home team at the Stadio Alberto Picco (La Spezia). The teenager has played two games in the Italian Serie B in 2016.

Out-of-favour Nigeria international Anderson Esiti clocked up ninety minutes as Estoril forced Arouca to a 1-1 draw in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. He was yellow-carded ten minutes out of intermission.

Kingsley Ndidi Olie was an unused sub in Mjoendalen’s 2-0 loss to Sandefjord in a Norwegian First Division clash.

In Sweden, Hakeem Araba hopped off the bench in the 34th minute as Falkenbergs FF were beaten for the sixth time in the Allsvenskan this season, losing 2-1 to GIF Sundsvall at the Norrporten Arena.

Kennedy Nwanganga and Faith Friday Obilor lasted the entirety of Inter Turku’s 2-0 loss at home to IFK Mariehamn in the Finnish Veikkausliiga. Philip Njoku was absent for Inter.

Former USA U20 international William Oluremi John started and played for 68 minutes as RoPS were held to a 1-1 draw by HIFK at Sonera Stadium (Helsinki). Nnaemeka Anyamele was on the bench for HIFK.

Super Eagles invitee Musa Mohammed did not take part in Istanbul Basaksehir’s shock 2-1 win against Turkish Super Lig giants Fenerbahce. The 19-year-old is yet to make his league debut.

Kenneth Omeruo worked a ninety-minute shift in defense but could not prevent Kasimpasa from losing 2-0 at Konyaspor.

Nosa Igibeor scored for Maccabi Tel Aviv in his first game for the club for close to three months, as the champions shared the spoils with Hapoel Raanana (1-1) . The Nigeria international was on target in the 60th minute, two minutes after he came off the bench.

Viking Striker Samuel Adegbenro Reveals He Was Not Under Pressure To Score

Viking striker Samuel Adegbenro has revealed that he was not under pressure from any quarters to open his account in the Norwegian Tippeligaen before he scored in his side’s 2-0 win against Tromsø this past weekend.

The former Kwara United star is optimistic that Viking will qualify for the Europa League at the end of the 2016 season, having missed out on a spot last term by just three points.

“The season has been good so far, I was not under pressure to score. Sometimes it happens like that that you are not scoring, as long as I am playing good,” said Samuel Adegbenro to allnigeriasoccer.com.

“For me, I don’t target the number of goals I’ll end up with, I believe in what God has destined. I understand my strike partner Suleiman Abdullahi very well, we are friends from Nigeria.

“Our target this season is to finish in the top three so we can qualify for the Europa League. ”

Samuel Adegbenro has been named in Viking’s starting XI eight times in the ongoing season from a possible nine games.

Leicester City Preparing New Bid For CSKA Moscow Star Ahmed Musa

English Premier League champions Leicester City will make a new bid for CSKA Moscow striker Ahmed Musa this summer.

Eyefootball.com, making reference to Daily Mirror, claims that the Foxes hope to bring the Nigeria international to the King Power Stadium on a similar fee that was rejected by the Muscovites in the January transfer window.

In the January transfer window, CSKA Moscow refused to do business with Leicester City because they did not want to lose one of their most important players at the halfway stage of the season.

Overall, Musa has appeared 41 times for the Russian side in all competitions this season, scoring 16 goals.

The 23-year-old is tied to CSKA Moscow until the summer of 2019.

Kenneth Otigba Snubs Hungary Again; Writes To NFF & Hungarian Federation Over Switching International Allegiance

Heerenveen defender Kenneth Otigba has hinted that he snubbed the chance to play for Hungary at the 2016 UEFA European Championship after he was contacted as he wants to fulfill his dreams of representing the Super Eagles.

The former Hungary U17s skipper has revealed that he has met several of the requirements needed for him to change his allegiance from Hungary to Nigeria and the ball is now in the court of the Nigeria Football Federation.

The BBC reported on Monday that Otigba, Chuba Akpom (Arsenal) and Dominic Iorfa (Wolves) may debut for the national team during the World Cup qualifiers.

“I played many games for Hungary’s youth teams and I have written to the NFF and the Hungarian Federation as well that I want to play for Nigeria if I’m given the chance, ” Otigba told allnigeriasoccer.com.

“I have a Nigerian passport, and made every contact and made every step to change my international allegiance to Nigeria.”

Kenneth Otigba was pleased to learn that he could be months away from making his international debut for Nigeria, with the NFF stating that the Heerenveen stopper will be handed a call up once they receive clearance from Fifa.

“I am very happy of course even if I am a little in the picture. I know if I do my very best, and I keep on playing games in my team I will get a chance to show myself.

“That’s a dream for me to play in the Super Eagles, and I think I can make the defense more organized.

“I was contacted a few times to play for the Hungary national team after I cancelled the last call up for a game but not officially, but my answer was still the same. My dream is Super Eagles, ” Kenneth Otigba added.

The Kaduna-born Otigba has made 31 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie this season and has netted three times from his defensive position.

Samuel wants permanent CSKA deal, returns September

Eagles striker Aaron Samuel

Nigeria striker Aaron Samuel has told AfricanFootball.com he hopes to seal a permanent contract with top Russian club CSKA Moscow just as he disclosed he hopes to return from a knee injury in September.

Twenty-one-year-old Samuel joined the Russian club on loan from Chinese outfit Guangzhou R&F in February, and scored twice in seven Russian Premier League games before he suffered a knee injury against this month.

That notwithstanding, he is hoping he has shown enough potential to earn a permanent deal with the former Russian champions.

“Yes I would like to stay,” he said about earning a permanent move to the CSKA Moscow Stadium.

“I would like to stay on but we just have to see how things turn out.”

The striker also explained why it took him some time to get going in Russia.

“I was new to the team and to the league and they had to introduce me gradually,” he explained.

He will have a corrective knee surgery and is expected back in action in September, when he must have fully recuperated.

Eagles won't replace injured Aaron Samuel

Eagles striker Olanare Aaron Samuel (right)

Nigeria will not replace injured CSKA Moscow striker Aaron Samuel for the friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg.

Samuel damaged knee ligaments during the recent Russia Cup final and has been effectively ruled out of both games.

Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye said on television Tuesday night the Eagles will travel with 25 players for the games to be played in Europe.

"There won't be any call-up to replace Aaron Samuel for the friendly games against Mali and Luxembourg,” Ibitoye disclosed.

“The NFF have come out to say this. The 25 players remaining on the call-up list are okay for the games."

There were strong indications that Portland Timbers striker Fanendo Adi would take the place of Samuel.

Nigeria face Mali on May 27 in Rouen, France, before they battle Luxembourg on June 1 as they begin their preparations for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
